Continuing the previous thread.

Exams, assessments, essays, etc.

Support, or lack of it.

Will they all get accommodation for next year and can they cook a balanced meal yet.

extinctspecies Definitely check your home insurance policy. Ours covers DS1's personal possessions (up to a limit that equates to around £3000) while he's "living away from home temporarily for the purpose of attending a school, college or university."

brizzledrizzle · 27/06/2018 15:15

DD has passed her first year so that's good to hear as she was ill during exam week and was sick in the exam hall.
Fingers crossed for anybody else still waiting for results.

extinctspecies · 27/06/2018 18:18

Thanks for the tips about checking home insurance.

Ours covers him if he's in a Hall of Residence, but not private accommodation.

So I guess we'll be looking at Endlseigh's policies ...

brizzledrizzle · 27/06/2018 18:48

Ours covers up to 5k in temporary accommodation whilst a student is at college/university. Thanks for the tip, it hadn't occurred to me to check.

Needmoresleep · 02/07/2018 19:02

Just one more 6 hour stint to complete then we can say goodbye to year1 and think about year 2.

She moves on Saturday and I am checking what needs to be done:

  1. Check home insurance
  2. Order broadband. Note Virgin are doing a good 12 month deal, but you may need to get landlord permission to install cable. Ditto its useful to know the existing phone number if you are using the telephone line for broadband.
  3. Apply for local authority council tax exemption. (Can be done on line but you need everyone's student number.)
  4. Agree how to manage and split utility bills. Take photos of meter readings including water if metered when they move in.
  5. Double check everyone has paid first months rent.
  6. Collect keys, double check inventory and note/photo any discrepancies.

What have I forgotten?

Before they left the focus was on exams, so I guess they did not have a chance to think about the practicalities. Dd is last to leave and first to return, so she might as well take the lead.

HSMMaCM · 02/07/2018 22:00

DD and her housemates set up a joint bank account. They all pay their rent / bill money into it and the direct debits go out of it.

Ours covers up to 5k in temporary accommodation whilst a student is at college/university.

DH checked ours, as DD was getting worried by the intricacies of the insurance policy offered for her summer accommodation. While it did cover her for up to 5k theft, it didn't include any liability insurance.

Needmoresleep · 02/07/2018 23:11

Our insurance does not have any student cover. We could have added it but apparently there were so many exclusions, as to make it pretty pointless. It might make sense for her flatmates to decide to get cover together, or we simply decide to take the hit, should her laptop get stolen.

Another thing for the list is TV license, which DD tells me they need if they decide to watch BBC iPlayer. A decision for them.

She finishes late tomorrow, driving theory test in London (far better availability) on Friday and then back to move accomodation.

And then, hopefully, a break.

I hope everyone else is enjoying the summer.

extinctspecies · 03/07/2018 08:22

DS has taken out the minimum contents insurance with Endsleigh, plus cover for his laptop anywhere (a MacBook, so expensive to replace). £140 premium for the year which he thought was a good deal (he's already got mobile phone insurance which I insisted on after he lost/damaged 2 in a year).

Moved out of his student accommodation & into his shared house at weekend. He left his room & bits of the kitchen immaculate, but I was shocked at the state of the rest of it. Apparently it's the girls who are messy!

New house is fine. He's got a small room, but it's at the back of the house looking over a garden. 2 boys & 2 girls sharing and 2 bathrooms between 4 of them. Decent kitchen.

One of his flatmates seems v. efficient & took photos of the meters & is organising the broadband.

All good.

bigTillyMint · 03/07/2018 13:18

Extinct, I have a similar quote for DD. She doesnt have mobile insurance- none of us do - but I think the MacBook needs to be insured. DH is helping her move on Sat.

I had Ensleigh insurance as a student back in the day Grin

LittleSpace · 04/07/2018 15:13

All of mine have passed exams with good results. Phew. I'm glad that the waiting period under the guillotine is over.

One has started work, one has a holiday job, one is travelling and one is recovering from the end of term as has only just finished. Accomodation is all sorted.

DD home for the summer!
Had a nice couple of days with her in her Uni town by the sea
But the flat tidy up, packing up her stuff, and drive home all took longer and more effort on both our parts than I'd been expecting.
Still great to see something of her though! 😀

bigTillyMint · 06/07/2018 18:46

DD is back from hols with her mates, and got her exam results - all good Smile

DH is taking her to move her stuff into her new house tomorrow whilst I take DS on a uni open day.

Horsemad · 06/07/2018 21:00

Shock wow bTM, uni visits with DS - that's gone quick.
