Oxbridge applicants 2018

I've hesitated before making this thread as I don't really like the whole making Oxbridge out as a special case when there are lots of amazing universities that are just as good for individual courses. However, it is a different application process with a lot happening by January should they get that far and irl I don't know anyone else's dc applying to talk to them about it. I expect most of us are in that situation. At the moment I rely on dd and the occasional foray into student room to learn what happens next.

So welcome all parents of Oxbridge candidates - a thread to chat over what's to come and to support if our kids find they have to steer in a different direction.

DS also received conditional offer from Manchester. Now got 3 COs on hand all are AAA, yet missing those from his most desirable choices of Imperial and Oxford!!

I just read during a stalk on the student room from Brasenose admissions (?)... applicants applying to courses within the first week of interviews should hear by Friday 24th

oh that’s not nice. I wonder why it takes some colleges much longer than others. How do students who have a long way to travel manage with that?

Tyunnos that’s actually excellent news for me - DD said she wasn’t expecting to hear until the 27th at least (based on last year I think) but that means she should hear by Friday!

Only one more week of jumping every time I see a text or Snapchat from DD and having to take a deeeeep breath before opening, only for it to be a request for a lift, or for me to buy apples . . .

Hello and sorry to barge in! Ds1 has just heard today that he has an interview for law in Cambridge (Homerton).

We live in the west of Ireland, and have a totally different system, so Ds has done every bit of research on applying all by himself. We are very proud of him and his initiative, as it’s quite unusual here to apply to Oxbridge.

It’s obviously step one of a long process, but still so pleased for him.

Thank you oybbk. No news here yet. Poor Dd is almost beside herself with anxiety. She is definitely taking it out on me but I'm giving her a pass for the next couple of weeks.

Cambridge interview confirmed late last night! Detailed schedule for 9.30-5, looks v organised. Just booked our hotel for the night before.

DD having a gap year so has her results and three unconditional offers but still waiting for her 2nd choice.

That is great news! It feels all strange all these people coming to my city!!! 😁😁

Hoofs, which college is it? Have you checked their website page? I know it sounds odd but DDs college suddenly added an ‘Applicants 2018’ page to their website last week with key dates and have been updating it to say when they have sent interviews out. It doesn’t help you to know when they are coming but at least you know you haven’t missed anything.

If It's any consolation dd's arrangements were confirmed after midnight. After midnight she sent a query and the admissions team replied within minutes! Her college and course do no appear on the student room schedule published up thread.

Hoof I believe your DD is waiting for Oxford. I believe humanities are sent out next week.

Those of you travelling to Cambridge by train, I thought the brand new Ibis hotel right next to the railway station was really good value.
Tiny rooms but clean and modern and a nice buffet breakfast.
