Oxbridge applicants 2018

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/08/2017 08:54

I've hesitated before making this thread as I don't really like the whole making Oxbridge out as a special case when there are lots of amazing universities that are just as good for individual courses. However, it is a different application process with a lot happening by January should they get that far and irl I don't know anyone else's dc applying to talk to them about it. I expect most of us are in that situation. At the moment I rely on dd and the occasional foray into student room to learn what happens next.

So welcome all parents of Oxbridge candidates - a thread to chat over what's to come and to support if our kids find they have to steer in a different direction.

Application forms due in in a few weeks Confused

The student room has a chart up of Cambridge interviews already offered. Just found it.

Risotto301 · 14/11/2017 16:23

congrats jaguar! your DD's course does not require aptitude test?

Hi Risotto - that's right, no pre-testing or written work for Biochem (last year as such apparently). It does mean though that they invite more to interview than other courses. She's thrilled & nervous in equal measure. Thankfully has fallen in love with 2nd choice (Manchester) x

Risotto301 · 14/11/2017 16:53

Good luck to your DD’s interview Jaguar!
DS also likes Manchester, and he is travelling there tonight for the interview tmr!
Fingers crossed!

Btw, did your DD apply for Imperial?

jaguar67 · 14/11/2017 16:59

Hi Risotto - good luck to your DS at Manchester! DD's interview there was more of an informal chat & they were very open that few would not be offered (not sure if that's for all courses). She's avoided London colleges purely because it's too close to home!! Shame though, as Imperial & UCL would definitely be on list otherwise!

Risotto301 · 14/11/2017 17:03

Jaguar, heard that for Manchester, interview = offer? Isn’t it untrue?

How long did your DD have to wait for the offer after the interview?

Not worrying for Manchester for my DS, he should have the good grades to secure an offer. Just that the offer at this time would ease his mind, boost his confidence and help us confirm no-go no-fuss for Hk universities!

jaguar67 · 14/11/2017 17:12

Risotto - DD verbally offered at Manchester interview (as were many). UCAS Track updated yesterday (just under 2 weeks later). As said above, admissions tutor said very few would not be offered places following the interview.

marmiteloversunite · 14/11/2017 17:19

My DD is applying for music. She did apply to Oriel but seems to have been passed onto another college. Not surprised as Oriel only has one music student. Haven’t seen the email yet as she has gone to training

itinerant · 14/11/2017 18:53

Have become ridiculously invested in others’ DC. So exciting! Well done and good luck!!

horsemadmom · 14/11/2017 19:02

Congratulations . Following with interest and best wishes whatever the outcome.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/11/2017 19:03

Well done to your dd Jaguar :) that’s ace!

No news here yet. I was convinced it would be today. It’s like when I do snow forecasts and everyone gets it but us :(
this is cruel.

Dd received an invitation to interview this morning Grin

She really didn't think she'd get one so is slightly flustered now it's happened. The Cambridge ones seem to be filtering through - her friend has a music interview.

Hubble25 · 14/11/2017 19:51

Well done to all with Oxbridge interview.:)

whiteroseredrose · 14/11/2017 19:54

No news here either kitten. DS hasn't mentioned anyone else getting interviews and I'm keeping quiet. If he go an Imperial offer I'd feel so much better. Sad

user2019697 · 14/11/2017 20:05

I would be very surprised if your DD didn't get an interview, kitten. Cambridge maths use (up to this year) AS UMS marks for filtering and from what you have written she is above the threshold for interview. (Maths tries to interview as many as possible.)

goodbyestranger · 14/11/2017 20:17

What is the threshold, or what has it been in recent years user2019697?Just curious, no vested interest (DS4 got full ums in all his papers at AS but isn't a Cambridge maths type judging by what's written on here and didn't apply for maths anyway, so the curiosity is very idle :)).

YippeeTeenager · 14/11/2017 20:44

No news here yet about Cambridge interview either. Not sure if DD knows they are due any minute and don’t want to wind her up by mentioning it, but am finding it very difficult not to ask if she’s checked her emails!

HesMyLobster · 14/11/2017 21:33

I did the oh so casual and breezy asking if DD had checked her email . .

The logical part of me knows not to expect to hear anything until at least 27th for Classics, but I’ll still be on edge for the next 2 weeks!

It really is fantastic to hear about all the dc on here getting interviews though, genuinely delighted for all of them (and their anxious mothers!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/11/2017 22:00

That’s brilliant Maladicta :) well done to your dd!

whiterose and yippee, it looks like they need to bide their time more, poor souls. It’s good though that they seem to be quite oblivious.

Thanks User. How are they going to filter next year?

Risotto301 · 15/11/2017 02:28

Thanks Jaguar for the info. That would be great if DS can get a verbal offer today with Manchester! Fingerscrossed!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/11/2017 07:32

Fingers crossed Risotto!

YippeeTeenager · 15/11/2017 09:04

Good luck today Risotto and everyone else waiting for news. Let’s all concentrate on our powers of positive thinking Smile

Hubble25 · 15/11/2017 09:40

Yes good luck indeed. Can I please ask about the situation of mock interviews. Who has had them? DS's school has failed to arrange any thus far.

goodbyestranger · 15/11/2017 10:23

My DCs' school did no mock interview until an invite had been received Hubble so as not to waste either staff or student time. And they got a single interview each, not plural. I don't think this is at all unusual in the state sector.
