Oxbridge applicants 2018

I've hesitated before making this thread as I don't really like the whole making Oxbridge out as a special case when there are lots of amazing universities that are just as good for individual courses. However, it is a different application process with a lot happening by January should they get that far and irl I don't know anyone else's dc applying to talk to them about it. I expect most of us are in that situation. At the moment I rely on dd and the occasional foray into student room to learn what happens next.

So welcome all parents of Oxbridge candidates - a thread to chat over what's to come and to support if our kids find they have to steer in a different direction.

Application forms due in in a few weeks Confused

I can’t find the Oxford one, I know it’s there but where? lol!

I can’t find the Oxford one either. There’s a general applicants thread, and an interviews thread. I’m sure I saw a stalking thread last week but can’t see it now.
Probably a good thing - I’m already spending far too much time worrying!

Lobster, I'm planning to fly over to UK from HK to accompany and drive DS from school to Oxford in case he gets the interviews! Also i will spend time meeting friends in UK and talk to his teachers! Really looking forward to it! And hope the Oxford interviews will happen so to make my trip the most meaningful!
I know getting the offer in the end is very long shot and kinda by luck as well, but the interview experience itself is very precious and valuable, I really hope DS can get thru to that point and being there with him sharing his lifetime experience sounds priceless to me!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/11/2017 06:56

Now you really do need the date Risotto Grin

Ah that makes sense if it’s a travel issue. For us it’s actually easier and quicker by train than by car to Oxford. Plus DD’s new found independence (since summer school she’s been zipping all over the country by train to visit friends she made) means she probably won’t want me there cramping her style!
Oxford have put the interview timetable on their website so we know exactly when DD would have to be there ( just not how long she’ll need to stay!) not sure if Cambridge do the same?

I can understand wanting to be there to share the experience though (especially all the way from HK Risotto - I can totally understand you wanting to come over!) I’m starting to get a bit of a pang! Perhaps I could drive down and pick her up at least on her last day? I’ll have a think!

Risotto301 · 14/11/2017 07:58

Lobster, picking her up is a fantastic idea! She would have loads to share with you right after the interviews!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/11/2017 09:16

That’s helpful that they have a timetable Lobster. I don’t think Cambridge do, but Cambridge is just one day, with at most two or three interviews. They don’t do interviews with other colleges like Oxford. So we know what week they will go if they get called for interview, just not which day.

Picking up your dd would be perfect, there are some quite nice bits to visit in Oxford if you want to do something while you wait.

Fab user! I think your dd is the first one on the thread to get an interview invitation. Weii done to her - is she nervous?

Well hunted Hubble!

That is fabulous news!!!

StephanotisFloribunda · 14/11/2017 12:33

Congratulations to your DD User! What exciting news!

inchyrablue · 14/11/2017 12:53

Gosh it all feels very real with interviews coming in. DD has low expectations of getting an actual interview, but school have gone a little overboard this week, and are giving them three mock interviews no less! One with a retired tutor in a related subject, one with the HT (whose subject I think it was, back in the depths of time) and one with someone who seems to have made a career out of doing mock Oxbridge interviews. We've just said to DD to roll with it, and think of them as practise for life going forwards. Then if she gets an interview, she'll hopefully just take it in her stride.

papayasareyum · 14/11/2017 13:04

I assume they’ll get an email to tell them if they haven’t got an interview too? I think I heard that somewhere. They won’t just get an UCAS notification to say they haven’t been offered a place at Cambridge?

marmiteloversunite · 14/11/2017 14:13

My DD just phoned me to say she had an email for an interview at Oxford. She was crying happy tears. I am so proud of her even getting this far. Now I am all of a dither and feeling very nervous for her. Wow. I need yo go and google some bed and breakfasts for me!!
