..actually both have needed a guarantor...

Squirrills · 11/12/2017 13:43

DS is home. Thinner and bearded. He hasn't sorted next years house out yet but has agreed to go in with three girls who have been in halls for their first two years. One is an overseas student and I wondered whether it may be tricky when it comes to guarantors. DS1 never needed guarantors for his uni accommodation in a different city but they all want it in DS's uni city.
I flatly refused to post passports last year when this came up. The agent wanted proof of ID and address. I rang them and said I was happy to sign as guarantor but not willing to post sensitive documents. I can't remember how we got round it but we did!

Not been on this thread for a long time. Nice to see how everyone's DC are doing.

DD is currently in the NL, coming to the end of her semester abroad at the beginning of YR2. She's home a week today and I can't wait to see her. She's been there since the end of August and other than texts and FaceTime we've not seen her.

She's already sorted out a house for YR3 and paid the deposit (£580 yikes!) and we'll finally be moving her into her YR2 house in Jan.

LIZS · 16/02/2018 20:43

Ds struggling a bit with accommodation for next year. He had hoped to take the place of another student in a private let going on a year abroad but that probably isn't happening now. Applied for halls only to get told the allocation for continuing students is currently filled and further allocations won't be made until June.

kath6144 · 21/02/2018 22:39

Also not been on the thread for a while.

@LIZS - you have my sympathy.

DS was planning a year in industry but after a lot of applications, a few interviews, an offer that he really didnt want, more interviews for placements he did want, we decided 2 weeks ago (when he was turned down for those) that he needed to sort Yr 3 accommodation out, even if he eventually got a placement and we had to forfeit the deposit. He knew he couldn't leave it any longer.

His friendship group had sorted a flat in private halls in the autumn. Now wish we had foreseen what could happen and put his name down regardless, and lost the deposit if need be. But as he said, hindsight is wonderful.

(plus the unis do such a good sell at open days for YII, we didn't realise it would be so difficult to get a placement. He has good grades, on for a first, has general work experience, volunteered abroad, lots of skills examples on CV. But out of 50 applying for YII on his RG science course, only 2 have got offers).

He has got into the same private halls as his friends (luckily, as was 90% full), but a different block. He's grumbling, but as I said, he'll spend a lot of time in their flat anyway (another guy is on his course, so can go back to flat with him most days) or studying for finals!!

He has still got a couple of placement applications outstanding, but also now got his name down for a summer placement abroad organised through uni. A lot of his course friends are doing it, and he will get to do some travelling too. So not all doom and gloom.

hellsbells99 · 22/02/2018 08:20

I can't believe they are now halfway through their second year and DD1 may possibly be halfway through her degree as she hasn't decided whether to do 3 or 4 years yet. She still hasn't finalised her house for next year yet but is hopefully sharing with 2 other girls. DD2 is planning to start looking for a placement during her third year so taking 4th year out and going back to uni for the 5th year. Some of her course friends have been applying for placements for next year and I know one of her close friends has got a good one - it does seem mixed. DD2's worry then is who she will share a house with in her final year. All her house/social friends are only doing 3 year courses so I think she needs to start finding some new friends!
There do always seem to be rooms available in shared houses though particularly come the summer when people drop out after exam results.
Good luck Kath with your DS' placement applications and to your DS LIZS with sorting out accommodation.

LIZS · 22/02/2018 08:29

Thanks. Hopefully he has found somewhere this week, although he only vaguely knows one of the others. Bit more expensive and in town but needs must and at least it is nearer Tesco! Fingers crossed. Next he has to find a placement for a day a week next year.

Good luck to those sorting also out their 3rd year.

Margomyhero · 23/02/2018 20:18

Just caught up on this thread. I didn't lnow it was still running .

Good to hear all is well with the 2nd years.

DS is doing well. Has already signed up for next year's house. I had to be a guarantor which I wasn't very happy about but am just keeping my fingers crossed.

It still feels odd waving him off to go and live his own life. I asked him where be calls 'home now and he said his uni house as that is where he spends the most time. Sad . At least he is happy there.

Leeds2 · 24/02/2018 08:44

My DD has just signed up for next year's flat too.

Coming home next weekend for Spring Break (for a week), but sadly doesn't get time off for Easter.

raspberryrippleicecream · 27/02/2018 00:06

DS signed up a little while ago for next year's house a while ago. He's sharing with the same group again, plus another mutual friend so hopefully all good!

He's just taken on a big leadership role in his extra curricular society, the idea being he'll do it this year, then the end of Y3 and Y4 he'll just enjoy the activity.

Am currently going through the process with DD!

Leeds2 · 27/02/2018 19:37

That sounds like a good move for your DS, raspberry. Hope he enjoys his year of authority!

Is your DD looking at DS's university, or somewhere completely different and far away?!

raspberryrippleicecream · 27/02/2018 23:36

Somewhere and something completely different! As far away as possible!

DS knew exactly what he wanted and had his choices done and dusted by Christmas. DD didn't get her PS done until December. She is now doing offer holders days in March. Totally different approach to DS!

Leeds2 · 28/02/2018 09:51

Ha ha!

Hope the snow doesn't prevent her getting to the offer days.

hellsbells99 · 28/02/2018 18:39

DD1 didn't go into uni today because of the protesters.
Hopefully she is signing up for her house tomorrow. DD2 signed up for hers ages ago!

kath6144 · 28/02/2018 21:11

Hells - which of your DDs is at Liverpool? DS has had a couple of lectures cancelled but his labs went ahead earlier in week. Dont think he's let the pickets bother him!!!

Having sorted out a flat for next year (but luckily only paid admin fee so far) he had a phone call on Monday offering him one of the placements he was turned down for earlier in month. The original successful candidate has dropped out it seems.

He was making plans to go abroad on a summer uni placement for 6wks, then travel, so a bit of a turn-around.

We all a bit stunned but so pleased, it is not related to his degree, but in a niche organisation that he aspires to work for after uni.

So we will now be house hunting in a different place! He thinks he will be put in touch with the other placement students, just waiting to hear. He has to have security checks, so passport has been sent off today!

Leeds2 · 28/02/2018 22:42

That sounds exciting kath! Will he be on placement for the whole year?

hellsbells99 · 01/03/2018 07:44

Kath6144 well done to your DS on getting his placement!
That picture was Liverpool yesterday

kath6144 · 01/03/2018 15:20

Yes a full years placement, starting early July, so he'll have a month off after term ends.

And hopefully no resits, but he is a hard worker, got good results so far, so should be fine.

Teenagedream · 08/03/2018 09:22

4 hr practical cancelled due to strike action this morning. I am sympathetic to the lecturers but it's very frustrating for the students. Apparently very unlikely to be rescheduled.

LIZS · 11/03/2018 15:38

Ds exams will be shortened to 2 essays in 2 hours instead of 3 in 3 to reflect missed teaching.

hellsbells99 · 12/03/2018 07:30

DD1, who thinks she only has 2 hours of lectures this week due to the strikes, has been told exams will contain all the content they were supposed to study. Apparently previous years lectures are being put on the internal system for them to self-study. That is assuming the exams go ahead ....

LIZS · 24/04/2018 13:15

Anyone still here? Ds starts 2nd exams tomorrow, also trying to organise next year's accommodation and an interview for a placement to support a module next year.

Leeds2 · 24/04/2018 14:07

My DD has an oral exam this week, and two written assignments to hand in. As she texted me last night to excuse her distinct recent lack of communication!
She is sorted for a flat for next year, sharing with a friend, and has a two month placement arranged for June and July which she is looking forward to.

MrsSnitch · 25/04/2018 12:33

Hello - I was here before but have since namechanged!
Can't believe the end of the 2nd year is looming! DS is doing his dissertation proposal and preparing for (just) 2 exams in June. Accomodation for next year sorted (new housemates due to some going abroad next year) and summer plans made. This time next year we will be preparing for graduation - I think real life over the horizon is just hitting him!

LIZS · 17/05/2018 08:24

Ds has finished his 2nd year exams. Needs to pay house deposit for next year and think about the summer. About to start the application process again with dd , just as ds is due to finish!
