They found that teachers in some state schools are not properly aware of what is required in a personal statement to ensure applicants are in the best position to be considered by top universities. Makes interesting reading.

Already - I'm not knowledgeable enough to know whether Oxford admissions need to be opened up to more scrutiny, but I'm genuinely not sure how you could practically or meaningfully examine whether one interview was fairer than another or that the "right" result had been achieved.

"Kids have a free choice where to apply in the state sector (is it different in Independents?)" Marnia - No - not different - they do have a free choice, but at DS's (independent ) school they do get advice along the lines that Disquis describes above. Which advice they are free to (and sometimes do Grin ) ignore.
