I'm sure there are some dc out there applying to places which don't often get mentioned on here. Hoping this will be a safe place to discuss these much overlooked (by mn) but still wonderful universities. Sometimes middle ranking institutions in the overall tables often trump over several of their more famous cousins when it comes to subject tables and don't really deserve the silent treatment.

She graduated last year, did History.

RockyRoadster · 18/10/2015 22:21

Not the same area at all then, DD is looking at Equine & Veterinary Bioscience! She was impressed with the Biological Sciences department when she looked round. A lot of the courses have similar modules in the first year allowing you to change after the first year if you decide you haven't chosen quite the right course.

OhToBeSkiing · 22/10/2015 14:20

Dd is looking to do a health related degree which is only available at about 12 universities. Of the four we have seen we have been far more impressed with the 'new' universities (post 1992) that the older and higher ranking universities. The degree has a large element of academia as well as the clinical skills elements - the 'new' universities seem so much more dynamic in balancing the two.

Anyone's dc sent off the form yet?

ds pressed send but its not complete as he didn't know his btec registration number and neither did his tutor which is worrying. He's relying on the careers woman who scrutinises every application to know where to find it. All the staff are working over half term but as yet no acknowledgement from ucas so have to assume they are still looking for the number. I think I read somewhere that there is a 2 week deadline for college to send it to ucas following receipt from a student but can't find where I saw that

Does it say anything on track? DS1 could said a status note came up on his as the reference was being done.

BestIsWest · 28/10/2015 09:09

Still deciding here. He has found the course he wanted to do - it turned out to be University of South Wales not Cardiff Met. He still needs a fourth and fifth choice. Our local uni does a similar course but he's refusing to apply there.
Anyone know what Bath is like to live in as a student? Is it hideously expensive?
At least his personal statement is done. Hmm.

eatyourveg · 28/10/2015 09:40

Best your ds could always send off the form with 3 choices and add the other 2 later. He only needs 2 offers to come back that he is happy with so looking for a 4th or 5th may not be needed. What subject is he going for? Bath is expensive as you say but it is beautiful.

Just noticed GloriaHotcakes on the Starting Y13 thread has posted she is off to Bath so it may be worth pming her

Visual Effects and/or Cinematography or Film Production, EYV. It would be Bath Spa rather than Bath.

He is really set on the course in USW as he went for a taster day in Y11 and loved it. Typical of him(dyslexic) that he didn't know where he'd been.

Ohtobeskiing · 28/10/2015 11:29

Or you can put Bath on the form and encourage him to go to an applicant open day.

GasLIghtShining · 28/10/2015 14:39

Best My DS is putting our local one down but not that keen.

Thought Cardiff was a great city. Not sure what Bath is like nowadays - spent my formative drinking years growing up nearby and it was brilliant. My DD has just come back from visiting a friend at uni in Bath and had a great time.

DS is still finishing the personal statement - she says sighing (he has been working though)

BestIsWest · 28/10/2015 14:45

We've been to Bath for weekends so he knows the town but he's convinced it will be hugely expensive to live there. Cardiff is a great place. It would be perfect for him really.

Gas My DS is in a similar position to yours but it's maths GCSE that he needs to get. Resits next week so fingers crossed.

GasLIghtShining · 28/10/2015 15:15

Best Good luck for the retake. DS not taking his until the summer.

Has he looked in into the cost of living in Bath. Is it just rent he is concerned about

eatyourveg · 28/10/2015 18:29

Best look at this for cost of living in Bath

BestIsWest · 28/10/2015 22:10

Thanks both, will sit down and look at that with him tomorrow.

hellsbells99 · 28/10/2015 23:00

Best has your DS looked at Salford university for Film Production? - Media City is in Salford

Blushingm · 16/11/2015 17:50

Best - I'm studying at USW. They are very supportive of their students. I had offers from Swansea and Cardiff (which is RG) but usw were my 1st choice

BestIsWest · 16/11/2015 21:42

That's good to hear Blushing. We're going to the open day on Saturday. I think it will be his first choice.

yolofish · 17/11/2015 22:41

I'm here! DD has 2 conditional offers for media production (loosely- they all have different, highly confusing names) at Greenwich and Winchester, which are her preferred choices in that order. still waiting to hear from Brighton and Surrey, Royal Holloway was a no (but we really took against head of course there, so that's oK...) Now just to get the right number of points!!

BestIsWest · 18/11/2015 08:14

What didn't you like about Royal Holloway? DS was considering it but decided against.

yolofish · 18/11/2015 10:25

RH is beautiful, gorgeous setting etc, and everyone we met was really nice and smiley. BUT the head of dept we spoke to was horrible, he took the piss out of DD because she mentioned having dyslexia. If it wasnt for him RH would have gone higher up her list of preferences, and we reckon he was the one who said 'no' - he made very specific notes about us.

BestIsWest · 18/11/2015 17:38

That's horrible Yolo. I'd have been furious.

NapoleonsNose · 18/11/2015 19:29

That is awful yolo. RH was near the top of DD's list and she does hold an offer but not sure she's that keen because the town itself was a bit of a dive. University was beautiful though. We are off to Bournemouth this weekend which is the last open day thankfully. I really want my weekends back!

yolofish · 18/11/2015 23:33

yeah, he was not a very nice man at all. so agree napoleon about wanting the weekends back! the whole process is bloody exhausting - I find we can manage about 3 hours per uni before I start gibbering and need to go home...

eatyourveg · 20/11/2015 14:09

Finally an email from college to tell ds that his ucas application has gone off - exactly 4 weeks after pressing "send". Only him and one other applying to uni from his faculty and it is blatantly obvious the dept has little experience of the system - I just hope the reference was reasonably professional - his tutor told me that the careers woman had given him a template to fill in as he hadn't done one before. Hey ho, what's done is done, just a waiting game now to see if anyone likes what they read.

Northumbria and Nottingham Trent are his top choices. Does anyone know if they answer quickly or hang around until after January?
