Anyone visiting Southampton uni on Saturday ?

likealaugh · 03/09/2014 20:33

We plan to visit as my son is keen to have a look around and as it's our first ever uni visit I'm super keen too ! Only thing is he's received no email ticket or information yet . Not a problem as I emailed and queried it and got a speedy reply apologising saying they were to be sent out in the next 24 hours .... Except it hasn't been . Now as I'm new to all this I not sure of the etiquette , do I pester again or will it miraculously appear ?
Is anyone planning a visit and if so have you received your info yet ? Many thanks , this uni lark is certainly ageing me Hmm.

Yes, we have. Booked a couple of weeks ago and last week ds got a text with a 'ticket' attached for the open day.

We had a problem with Leicester - booked a place on line and the last thing we saw was a message confirming all OK and that we would receive a confirmation email. We didn't so I emailed the link on the open day bit of their website and they got back to me fairly quickly saying they had no record and suggesting I did it again.

But as Southampton open day is on Saturday I would ring them tomorrow.

stone
TBH call them and turn up anyway ....
they are a bit distracted at the moment with the shiny new Boldrewood building and a few news items re the hospital Smile

circular · 03/09/2014 22:50

Yes, got ticket emailed just over a week ago. Booked a week before that.
never had a ticket from any others we've been to, or had booking checked - registration seems to be voluntary, so theoretically could have just turned up without booking.
I think the ticket for Southampton is mainly for free shuttle buses to the campus.

Many thanks , will email again and just turn up if needed !

Our ticket arrived in my junk mail folder, maybe you need to check yours.

In practice it would be fine to just turn up - they would welcome additional visitors on the Open Day and are generally set up to cater for far more than the number registered.

I don't think the admissions staff are at all distracted by Boldrewood etc - this doesn't have much to do with what they are organising.

we really enjoyed the open day this time last year and now in two weeks time my DD1 will be moving in to the Wessex Lane Halls there and starting a MLang in Modern Languages after brilliant A level results !!

Robmad · 04/09/2014 21:45

Just thought this might help. Booked the Friday session at Southampton's open day back in June. Couldn't make it so my son and I went the following day. No one queried anything even the subject specific talk. Lots of people queuing with vouchers etc. I simply said to the student checking us in that I had left it in the car. Please don't stress about a ticket they really don't care. We are off to Sheffield on Saturday, again without a voucher!

DulcetMoans · 04/09/2014 21:51

Please check junk mail, some have ended up in there. But don't worry, you can still go without it!

ISingSoprano · 05/09/2014 07:07

Hope you have a good day. Ds is just going into his second year at Southampton and is loving it.

unweavedrainbow · 05/09/2014 07:22

My DH is a Phd student at Southampton and helping to run the open day. I would just turn up-he says that they're always glad of extra numbers.

Thanks all , have e-ticket and looking forward to finally visit !

Enjoy.
There is a bench memorial to my favourite barmaid on the hill below the Union bar. Its a good place. I met DH there.

ISingSoprano · 05/09/2014 18:58

Sorry - quick hijack - talkinpeace I think your dd is starting PSC with my dd. Has she had her tutor group yet and got all her enrolment work done? My dd took a while to crank up the brain cells but now has everything done ready for Monday.

DulcetMoans · 06/09/2014 17:58

How did it go? Did you have a good day?

likealaugh · 06/09/2014 18:26

Had a great informative day . Really enjoyed it as did my son . Now the hard bit , trying to get a place !! What did everyone else think ?

OP posts:
stonecircle · 06/09/2014 19:42

DS really liked it. Seems like just the sort of place he's looking for. Will definitely be one of his choices.

traceyinrosso70 · 06/09/2014 21:49

My DD starts there in two weeks time so if anyone wants to ask anything about applying/accommodation etc in the coming weeks then please feel free to ask anything . DD was glad she got to go back for interview after applying as she felt it confirmed that it was the place she wanted to go and visiting when the Uni was in normal working mode rather than an open day gave her chance to experience a more normal day.

stonecircle · 07/09/2014 00:12

Anyone know how likely universities are to interview before offering places? I didn't think many places did anymore. I'm not sure why I thought that!

circular · 07/09/2014 09:18

Stonecircle Re interviewing, quite often says on the individual course requirements. DD1 has been surprised at how many seem to NOT interview/audition for music.

stonecircle · 07/09/2014 09:45

DS wants to do geography and I can't see anything on the individual course requirements to say they interview. Nothing to say they don't either! Slightly alarmed by Tracey's comment about an interview at Southampton as I hadn't factored that in. We would need to work on DS's monosyllabic conversation style!! But I'm getting ahead of myself - he hasn't applied yet never mind got an offer or the required grades!

likealaugh · 07/09/2014 10:36

In the philosophy talk yesterday we were told they won't interview students as they thought it would delay offering places due to people having to travel and some people not being able to come back. I really enjoyed all the info yesterday , especially the talks. Made me wish someone had encouraged me to go to uni Hmm.

Also did anyone visit the halls of residence yesterday ? We went to Glen Eyres which was lovely but expensive and we ran out of time to visit the others ? Any advice about a good price but in a decent area ?

OP posts:
TalkinPeace · 07/09/2014 17:54

Glen is lovely : but much more crowded than in my day.
Monte and co are the other main centre
but the big hall in town just opened
Bencraft is probably still cheap .
Newitt / St Margaret are since the stone age

Geography outs self pick whether you want to do Ba or BSc and then pick your field trips
I loved it
