G&T co-ordinator sending children's poems to vanity press

Maybe this should be in general Education, but it was the G&T person who instigated it, so...

Some of the children's poems, DD's included, were sent off to a company called Forward Press which advertises itself in schools. This was done without parental consent. The first we heard about it was when DD got a letter inviting us to buy a copy of the book, provided that we sign a copyright form for her poem's inclusion. They also sent a spurious certificate and some stickers.

Just wanted to warn everyone not to get involved with this. As a professional in the industry this kind of thing offends and worries me hugely - I am warning my students off this sort of outfit all the time.

They are a profit-making company, a borderline "vanity press". Your child's poem is not "published" if it gets into one of their shoddy "anthologies". They put in everything they are sent, and then market the book at an exorbitant £15.99 a copy for a poorly-produced paperback. Compare this with a normal paperback anthology on the high-street bookshelf - it's about twice the price.

You do not pay to get published, and you do not pay to "see your work in print". If you contribute to a book, you get a copy. One, at least. What Forward and others like them do is simply preying on parental pride and children's innocence.

If your school is approached by them, I strongly encourage you not to get involved.

Yep, it's that time of year again, we too this week had the usual your child out of 20,000 contributors has had his short story chosen to appear in the book which a copy will be kept at the British Library and you are entitled to purchase a copy at £15.99 or buy three for two blah blah blah and this on the day you wanted to strangle the little sod then read the letter and your initial reaction is WOW what a little poppet. Then telephoning aunts and uncles who are all extremely proud.

Still all that evaporated when he went to school the next day and found out that all but about two had received the very same cr*p.

I am quite annoyed that the school (secondary) has fallen for this and will see what they have to say at the parents evening this week.

Even he now realises it is all a con which if not illegal should be, and not only does it demoralise those who thought they had done something special it is also a kick in the nethers for those very few who are not chosen.

Sadly this has gone one step further at my childrens school. My year2 child was sent home with a pro-forma entry form including space for name and address. her teacher then filled this in with my childs actual address and the letter came to my home meaning that the school has ignored the Data protection act. when we queried this with the head and our other worries she confirmed that she would investigate but that she backed the company 100%

It is very worrying that schools are taken in by this vanity publishing scam and release data to a private company without any parental consent. Raise it with the governors and show them the press coverage.

damn -just realised how old this thread is!!!

I was one of those anoying parents who spoilt everyone else's fun but when a letter arrived at our home address with our child's name on I was absolutely livid and school was incredibly nice to me

more resently I have complained about a charity shoot out competeion which was supposed to raise money for the school and action for children but the children 'won' prizes for getting different level of sponsorship -school isn't taking part next year......

I thought you guys might want to get my opinion.

I'm in secondary school (Year 10) and entered a couple of poems to competitions they had; they both got in, although others from my school didn't. It's a little disappointing to find out it was fake, but I don't mind that much, they were just for fun. I know my own ability, and although it's difficult to tell I think I'm pretty good-I've placed in poetry competitions at school, and gotten very good feedback on Fanfiction poetry. Of course, that's not a completely accurate estimation, but if you want an idea, I'll happily post one here. :)

Luckily, my parents would never have bought the book anyway ;) They didn't know it was a scam, but they just don't read poetry :D

What I'd do is, if my kid got submitted to this with a halfway decent poem and I found out it's a vanity publishing service, I'd take the poem and secretly post it on Fanfiction/Livejournal, collect a few good reviews, then tell them it was fake but show them the good feedback. It's a win-win-they know to be wary next time and they're sort of brought back down to earth, but they don't lose any confidence in their writing ability or disheartened.

Plus, Fanfiction and Livejournal communities are, in my experience, very supportive and constructive, especially towards younger writers. It's a good place to start your/your kid's writing journey, IMO-it definitely improved my writing :)

Happy writing, and merry Christmas! Xmas Grin

Forward Poetry/Press
The Murky and Sometimes Sinister World of Poetry Sites

This article is written as an amateur poet who has been on many sites; my conclusion is there is a reason publishers do not take writers who post on such, seriously.

After many weeks of probing Forward Poetry with my partner, I can report the following.

Forward poetry make no attempt to protect the vulnerable. They make no attempt to prevent multiple accounts by persons who have questionable agendas. They allow bullying on-site, yet if one should complain, they send a warning that the complainant's account will be disabled should the behaviour be repeated. Meanwhile they allow the perpetrator to continue their attack. I was even attacked by a political extremist who accused my play on words, ‘lemon kurds’ of being racist terminology and her husband had even recommended she reported it to the police. Ridiculous, hey. My partner and I were labelled as ‘trolls,’ ‘racists,’ etc, and Forward Poetry allowed and continues to allow this person to remain on site. However, other accounts were and are, deleted for innocuous comment in suspicious speed.

Forward Press make a few murmurs to give the impression they are a responsible site. For example, one must tick a warning box if the contents contain explicit material, in case ‘under 12’s’ should be reading. That’s right, under 12’s! However they have no qualms in allowing the C word in all its glory to be displayed in a title.

As a mother and one who takes their craft seriously, I would strongly advise one keeps themselves safe, by not involving themselves with this site.

My firsthand experience was Forward Poetry Admin disabling their personal messaging system. However, this did not stop two members sending me questionable messages and me replying. Initially I thought it was a fluke, and one was from a seemingly genuine poet. I will not go into too much detail, because I am embarrassed I fell for such a ruse, and I am still not entirely sure why I was targeted or to what end. I will simply say I exchanged my personal email address with someone I did not know, who extracted personal information from me and in turn discovered she/he had many guises on the Forward Poetry site.

Furthermore there is one by the name of Arturon, who claimed to be a reputable psychologist, oncologist, etc and wrote in a way which made this claim extremely questionable. He said too he wrote: Poetry Stuff … more fings wot I rote, etc. This is online in the name of John Cahill. He had an email address: [email protected]. There is no Dr Cahill who is a psychologist or oncologist. When I challenged him/her, his bio magically disappeared, but no worries I have kept a copy. In addition there is someone called Moog/Peter From who fluctuates between being literate and illiterate. Indeed, there is a Peter Dome/Moog who publishes poetry and has his own failed poetry site

To protect myself from undesirables, I used Forward Poetry’s blocking facility. I was immediately attacked from the many writers I blocked. Furthermore, I could see I was being manipulated and the positive comments on my poems were unlikely to be genuine. My supposed supporters were commenting favourably on my posts, and at the same time commenting in a supportive manner on the daily constant streams of hostile ‘poems’ aimed at me (and my partner). Another reason for blocking was due to the barrage of vitriolic, hate inducing posts and comments and the barmy political ones which I found offensive. In addition I blocked the ones I believed to have multiple accounts, manipulating the system so they appeared as a top writer, when they were clearly nothing of the sort.

Forward Poetry has a Poem of the Month ‘competition.’ The 5 finalists appear to be the ‘poems’ that have the most ‘likes.’ Rarely does one who has genuine talent appear. I can only imagine this is because the least talented are the ones who are most likely to buy their anthology. Only the winner receives a prize of £25 and a free copy. I do not know if the ‘winner’ is someone that works in admin; I can only suspect.

Conclusive Conjecture:

Another person who helped me in my investigations (a minority genuine writer who contacted me) realised an NHS connection. Many referenced their links to mental health, nursing, care system, etc (since deleted from their bios). This could explain how so many have multiple accounts and the clique amassed. Of course, there will always be fan based groups gathering on these sites, but none quite so sinister as on Forward Poetry (or on the same scale). It appears there are about a dozen (if that) writers who use multiple accounts to post as different writers. The commenting on others and their poetry is inconsistent which suggests they take turns in operating the same accounts.

I could go on and on, but it is a books-worth, one I will be self-publishing in rhyme with all my additional findings. Of course, some names will be changed. For now, please stay safe.

nb Forward Press owner, Ian Walton has been exposed for fraud throughout Europe and is a well recognised Vanity Publisher/crook!
