" what are they doing for my genius?"

Answer: not enough, and have therefore ruined any potential.
It's nice that you find it so funny.

tortoiseSHELL · 28/09/2007 10:24

D'you mean ORT level 10?

That is EXACTLY why G&T is so wrong! Do you think the children get a slip saying 'Sorry, you are no longer G&T'?

foxinsocks · 28/09/2007 10:25

I think people often confuse early reading with being gifted and talented.

It's a bit like potty training. Some do it early, some do it later but in general, they all get there in the end!

Piffle · 28/09/2007 10:26

shite school by the sound of it
I know it elvesl out but for a kid to read that early and not to progress at all is an indictment on the school and/or the parents

haychee · 28/09/2007 10:31

G & T? Honestly! G&T to me is a child who passes alevels at age 8! Not a child who reads well.
We would all like to think i dc have special skills superior to others, but like fox says, they all tend to level out in the end.

Who gives out these labels? I presume its the parnts themselves. I could say the same abut my dd1, she is fantastic at certain things, but i dont spout on about how gifted or talented she is. All kids are different and have skills at different things. Some are more determined to get things right (like my dd1, will NOT give up until something is perfect) others dont want to even try if they know they cant do it first time.
This G&T thing really winds me up.

blimey, what a mean-spirited OP. Playground-style schadenfreude is very unattractive in an adult

ImNotInterestedInYourKids · 28/09/2007 10:40

readign does though

you dont get a 34 year old being hailed as" a good reader"

OP posts:
MamaG · 28/09/2007 10:44

I think I'm G&T in reading.

Piffle · 28/09/2007 10:45

do in our house
dp is shockingly slow literate and possessor of high quals and top job but a very slow and laborious reader..

Im not saying G&T kids dont exist but i think to regard a primary school age kid as G&T because they read well is not true G&T.
Real G&T is astounding, achieveing something most adults would stuggle or never be able to do. Like passing a levels at age 8.
My dd is a superb reader better than most others in her school year (Yr2) and always has been, but she is not G&T.

codswallop · 28/09/2007 10:46

lol at g and t in reading
i read fast

KTeePee · 28/09/2007 10:47

Agree they are not an urban myth but I do think that some parents (especially if they have not had a G&T person in their immediate family before) think that a child who is just "bright" should have the G&T label (not saying any MNetters would!)

My kids are all bright (preen) but they are not exceptionally so - I know because my sister is but I'm not sure I would still label her as "gifted" and...

Twiglett · 28/09/2007 10:47

this is about the mother not the child, the child is doing fine and is probably average for his age now

this is why G&T labels are so crap too

because some people cling on to them in the vain thought that it reflects well on them, some people make a big fuss of how badly the school is letting their special children down because their children are more important that other people's children because they're G&T

when G&T is a pathetic label applied to just the top 5 - 10% clever kids .. clever kids are just clever kids ... there are about 5 kids in a generation who are farkin' gifted or talented IMHO

MascaraOHara · 28/09/2007 10:48

I think I'll be drowning in G&T later.. sorry I couldn't resist

auntyflorence · 28/09/2007 10:48

Did I read somewhere that OP is paying for Grammar School coaching for her DC?

singingmum · 28/09/2007 10:49

Shouldn't you be upset for the poor dc who may now feel like a faliure not gloating over the poor things failed expectations. It's the mother you have a prob with not the child

heifer · 28/09/2007 10:49

MamaG - you are not a G&T in reading, you have a G&T whilst reading, tis very different...
