How many children in the country are TRUELY gifted and talented

I don't mean the mickey mouse gifted and talented labelling that is used in state schools. I mean truely exceptional children, ie. the sort of children on a par with Ruth Lawerence who was mathematically gifted or possibly Charolotte Church who sang at a very early age. (Admitally Charolotte Church has rather messed up her life..), or Aled Jones who sang the snowman.

Prehaps the question is how to make sure they grow up into rounded individuals like Aled Jones and they don't end up like Michael Jackson or Charolotte Church.

I used to work at the National Academy for G&T and they reckoned 5% (one in twenty). But that has to be pants doesn't it? Quite honestly the standards were not as high as you'd think for testing (though that may have changed and some of these kids were hothoused so much they had zero social skills.

Personally I think being labelled G&T can be a curse!

Someone please educate me.

scattyspice · 15/09/2007 16:13

Not mine.

MaureenMLove · 15/09/2007 16:16

Gifted & Talented, m'dear.

tiredemma · 15/09/2007 16:18

No I know it means gifted and talented ( c'mon mo- even im not that stupid!!)

but what does Gifted and Talented mean in itself? what does this consist of? I have never heard of it.

tortoisekinnockSHELL · 15/09/2007 16:20

On a point of order, Aled Jones didn't sing "The Snowman". On the film soundtrack, "Walking in the Air" was sung by Peter Auty. Aled Jones was already a well known chorister, and when they released it as a single, they rerecorded it with Aled Jones singing the solo.

MaureenMLove · 15/09/2007 16:20

Sorry! Not with it today! Its a label that exception children are given at school, if they are much higher than average in a particular subject. That how I see it, anyway! Mine is, but its not an academic subject, so I try not to get involved too much tbh!

Who me! Why?

tortoisekinnockSHELL · 15/09/2007 16:22

Oi cod, I'm presuming that was aimed at me! I shall deflect it straight back to you! Always think it is rough on Peter Auty. AND I was v. pissed off in pub quiz when they marked me wrong for answering PA to question "who sang walking in the air for the film the snowman".

AND to cap it all, the day I found out was PA and not AJ, I thought I would surprise dh with my new found knowledge, so I asked him 'Who sang Walking in the Air in the film The Snowman?' and he f*ing answered "Peter Auty". Was SO CROSS.

fillyjonk · 15/09/2007 16:25

42

tortoisekinnockSHELL · 15/09/2007 16:26

I remember AJ's Songs of Praise series on CE rites of passage - they showed his son's baptism, his wedding, and the last one was funerals. But not his.

Shoshable · 15/09/2007 16:31

Only everknown one in almost 30 years of childcare , a little girl I have now, who has been with me since a baby, she is now 5, and reading Harry Potter, her reading level is 10.8 she is 5.4.

tiredemma · 15/09/2007 16:34

PMSL.

'but not his'.

Lilymaid · 15/09/2007 16:38

Three in DS1's year at school (rather exceptional school). My favourite example of a G&T was someone who said in an interview "I was sitting in my room at Cambridge, having just played in the Varsity match, deciding what to do during the Christmas vacation - play in the National Youth Orchestra or play cricket for England." (Or words to that effect).

cornsilk · 15/09/2007 16:39

Some truly G& T chn aren't recognised at all. Einstein for instance - didn't do brilliantly as a child but excelled as an adult.

francagoestohollywood · 15/09/2007 16:39

don't know how many, put possibly more than everywhere else in Europe !!!

"Prehaps the question is how to make sure they grow up into rounded individuals like Aled Jones and they don't end up like Michael Jackson or Charolotte Church."

I think that is absolutely the point.

Also to encourage them NOT to take a humanities degree and end up as a very very clever secretary
