How many children in the country are TRUELY gifted and talented

I don't mean the mickey mouse gifted and talented labelling that is used in state schools. I mean truely exceptional children, ie. the sort of children on a par with Ruth Lawerence who was mathematically gifted or possibly Charolotte Church who sang at a very early age. (Admitally Charolotte Church has rather messed up her life..), or Aled Jones who sang the snowman.

Prehaps the question is how to make sure they grow up into rounded individuals like Aled Jones and they don't end up like Michael Jackson or Charolotte Church.

"I was sitting in my room at Cambridge, having just played in the Varsity match, deciding what to do during the Christmas vacation - play in the National Youth Orchestra or play cricket for England."

Why isn't there a National Association for average children?

Blandmum · 15/09/2007 17:01

I've worked with kids on a NAGTY day, and while they were great fun, and obviously clever, there were no children there who made me think 'Farking hell, megga brilliant'.

a mate of mine who has been teaching for over 30 years says he has taught one utterly remarkable child in all that time. Lots who are clever, but not outstanding.

Shoshable, I would query your definition of G&T. According to your criteria I too was afflicted - I had a reading age of 13 when I was actually seven. In fact I would surmise that in fact I was merely very bright. The whole thing IS A PILE OF TOSH.

Shoshable · 15/09/2007 18:47

bluestocking, I am going on what the school have told her parents.

whomovedmychocolate · 15/09/2007 19:56

MartianBishop - do I know you? I was the first hire at NAGTY and did the first summer school (this is getting to be a small spooky world!)
