Bit grim - but how do you clean your kids ears?

My dad used to shove a kirby grip in mine to remove the wax - will never forget it - would make me gag sometimes. Disgusting!

Anyway, desperate to know if there is a way to clean a young chaps ears out....always been a big fan of cotton buds, but know it's dangerous.

eeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!! my mum used to do the kirby grip thing yuk!

Toothache · 09/06/2005 13:37

Gentle swizzle of a cotton bud.... not deep though, just arond the entrance when I can see wax building up. It makes me gag!

ninah · 09/06/2005 13:39

I really like it .. it's soo... productive!
cotton buds, but gently

Carla · 09/06/2005 13:39

With toothache here. Awwww, how can it make you gag? When there's none there to fish out I miss it like nits.

anchovies · 09/06/2005 13:39

I only do the very outside bit if I can see anything with a cotton bud. Not heard of the kirby grip thing, sounds scary!

acnebride · 09/06/2005 13:40

I love cotton buds, but truly I do think it's dangerous. I do put a wipe over my finger and clean his outer ear, but leave any wax further in to come out in its own time.

Tissy · 09/06/2005 13:40

a flannel on the end of a finger!

SaintGeorge · 09/06/2005 13:42

I worked with an ENT doc once. His favourite motto was "never put anything in your ear that is smaller than your elbow"

Carla · 09/06/2005 13:44

Tissy, a flannel? Has you child ears like plates?

almostanangel · 09/06/2005 13:45

it was horrible dont try this at home kids!! you know the brown hairpins you used to see in old ladies hair holding their curlers in ,,? well loving parents that i and dhw had used to put them in our ears and drag em around scopping out any wax..gag gag!! [sure the egyptians used to do it with brains lol!! am i the only one that thinks theres a G spot in your ear cos if you get the cotton bud in the right place ,,it has a very nice feeling i will shut up now..ooh but when i was 15 cleaned my ears with cheap buds ,one fell of i had to go to a and e to get it removed the bud not the ear!..........

geekgrrl · 09/06/2005 13:47

best thing apparently is to make your child lie back in the bath so that the ears can have a good soak and wax comes out on it's own much easier afterwards.
Cotton wool buds compact the wax and mess up the natural cleaning mechanism.

desperatehousewife, are you me?! I was just about to ask this very question this morning (only I got sidetracked and forgot)!!!!

ds2 doesn't seem to get much wax, but ds1 is a wax factory. I'm sure it must affect his hearing somedays - selective deafness though, can always hear the biscuit tin... funny that.

AAA, I know what you mean about the ear g spot!

Carla · 09/06/2005 14:17

One waxy, one non-waxy in this household

donnie · 09/06/2005 14:20

I occasionally use cotton buds but carefully as a friend of mine perforated her own eardrum with one!

suzywong · 09/06/2005 14:22

yes she's right about the ear g spot!

I have non waxy ears and dreamed of having kids with bovril in theirs, but alas they are quite clean, sometimes a bit of golden syrup but rather barren on the whole

Blackduck · 09/06/2005 14:24

waxy (very) along with sweaty feet (nothing to do with me....I blame dp...)

DissLocated · 09/06/2005 14:25

I use Audiclean on dd, only when the wax builds up though, not every day like it says on the bottle. Since I've been doing that she's not had any ear infections (touch wood)

NotQuiteCockney · 09/06/2005 14:29

I use cotton buds, but only around the edge. When they're small, I hold their head to my chest while I do it, so they don't move (ideally, someone else does the cleaning, as of course I can't see).

jambo1707 · 09/06/2005 15:20

I also use cotton buds, have done since bringing the boys home and they all now love to have their ears cleaned

Fio2 · 09/06/2005 15:21

we have one waxy and one not

i use cotton bub cleaner things too

jampots · 09/06/2005 15:35

I have non waxy ears too as does ds but dd is a law unto herself - hers are literally dripping.

However this is disgusting. I do occasionally use cotton buds in my own ears even though there's nothing there and once I pulled out his huge piece of brown stuff - twas horridly fascinating though!

ninah · 09/06/2005 15:38

if you think that's bad, you want to see a syringing, jampots!
