Vomit, Poo [very sad emoticon]

I am officially nearing the end of my tether. My DS's both have a violent case of Gastro. It's coming out of both ends and today, I have been covered on a number of occasions with vomit and diahorrea .

We have only just started to recover from a recurrent bout of ear infection which culminated in an ear operation late last week for DS2.

Now it looks like I'll be having at least another 2 or 3 broken nights. I know it sounds petty, but I really feel as if I can't take anymore. My day is just one long round of cleaning up sick and administering medicine. DS2 started being ill on 9th May, he has always been a poor sleeper but it's been abysmal since then. I am so bloody tired [sigh]

Sorry, just needed to moan (again!).

That's pretty daunting, I totally understand why you feel how you feel. Will keep my fingers crossed that your ds's get better soon.

I had bad PND when DS1 was born 4 years ago. I was totally fine after DS2 came along but today I am starting to feel as if I cant cope.

I went to the pharmacy for the fourth time in 2 days this afternoon, when she told me that she didn't have some of the medicine I needed and that I'd have to drive to another pharmacy I burst into tears which is quite unlike me.

How long can a four year old carry on vomiting for before becoming dehydrated?

Sorry, don't know the answer to your question but I do sympathise with your episode in the chemist as I had the same last week (actuall had to go to 5 but that is another story!!)

God, it's the Augean Stables here too - with ds crapping himself and wetting himself in the street and crying and stamping at the mention of pullups - albeit in a much more minor way than yours, and I am unutterably sick of it.
Ds is putting up such a fight against any change of location today ('Don't want to go to the park, don't want to go home, don't want to go to the shop, don't want to go home' repeat until mother has nervous collapse) that I just don't get any chores done because I can't face another argument/grizzle - so the stuff for the charity shop is still in bags in the hall and the metanium for dd's bottom still unbought and the milk still at perilously low levels. And this is on near enough good night's sleep.
I would have cried too tbh.
You are coping with a lot. Can you get any help?
Poor you. I really do feel for you.

thanks BS and Aloha,

sadly help is out of the question. The mere mention of gastro sends even the hardiest of souls scuttling.

DS1 has just vomited again and is now very sleepy so I am starting to worry a little. I am waiting for the paediatrician to call me back.

Sorry your day has been crap too Aloha. Just keep muttering to yourself this too shall pass.

how long has he been ill? is he keeping any liquids down?

have you got some dioralyte?

as horrible as it tastes, when they have vomiting and diarrhoea, it's brilliant for rehydrating them (and you can get it in lots of different flavours)

even if you just spoon the liquids in teaspoon at a time so that he's not bringing it back straight away it will help... lots of sympathy to you

I am a nurse, but deal with adults, but rule of thumb is 24 to 48 hrs. Tips to look at are dry eyes and dry tongue and mouth for dehydration and lethargy. Also whether he has a temperature would be a cause for concern. Look on nhs direct website \link{www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk} at self help guide. Wishing them well soon

Quick update before I fly back to the hospital.

Both boys have contracted a fairly unusual form of Gastro Entertis. Both are in hospital .

DS1 is really ill, on a drip, not very coherent and generally very unhappy.

DS2 is ok. Has terrible diahorrea and will have a feeding tube later tonight if things dont improve - they tried four times to get a drip in him to no avail .

can't quite remember if you are in cape town or zim...I was lucky enough to get lovely bacterial dyssentry whilst living in SA and I can't imagine how awful it must be having children who have such terrible diarrhoea and vomiting. Hopefully the hospital will sort them out. Thinking of you all, let us know how they are.

Dejags, I really feel for you especially having your two in hospital. Hope they get better soon.

My 20 month daughter had gastro 2 weeks ago and didn't eat for 6 days. Just lay moaning drifting in and out of fitful sleep 24/7. I also got covered in the unmentionable several times and it was so violent there was nothing I could do to "catch" it. My sofa, chairs and carpet all suffered too. In the end we took her to an emergency doctor (after being passed round the houses for 2.5 hours thanks to NHS Direct ...) who was greatly reassuring when I finally got her on the phone and told me to bring her straight in. Never mind this involved a 12 mile drive to Cambridge with a very poorly child - whatever happened to housecalls ???? The Doctor said that she'd seen a huge no. of viral gastro cases in the last couple of weeks.

Thankfully, she is fully recovered now and eating like nothing happened. Obviously, we were lucky she didn't end up in hospital. At least you can be a little reassured (I know it's impossible to stop worrying altogether) by the fact they're in the best possible place with professionals to take care of them.

I missed this earlier, Dejags, and am sorry to hear your little ones are so poorly. Dh has just had a rotten campylobacter infection which knocked him for six so how much worse it is in tiny ones, I shudder to think. Best wishes to you all.

just back from the hospital for a few hours. DS1 is greatly improved and DS2 is much better although the diahorrea is still horrendous - we had to change his bedding 8 times today .

The paediatrician says we can bring them home tomorrow if all goes well tonight.

Hold thumbs.

So glad they're improving. You might want to stay an extra day or two until the danger of a cascade of laundry at home has gone!
