I'm in frigging pain, can't get a frigging Drs appnt till Thurs!

I have got ulcers on the back of my throat, well actually it may be on my tonsils, I'm not entirely sure of the biology. All I know is yesterday I had a sore throat and one ulcer there and now it has spread and I have white blotches on the back of my throat. Also you know those little pimply spot things you get on your tongue, I have loads of them.

It kept me awake all last night. I have dazed my way through work and found when I got home that it has got worse, my frigging dr won't give me an appointment till Thursday - bastards. I frigging hate them! I can never get appointments let alone with my doctor!

I'm swollen just below my ear, worse on one side, with white patches on both sides and it is making me feel quite sick. The thing is it doesn't feel like it is a good enough reason to take time off work. Can anyone help? Is this just ulcers or further infection? Is it normal to have to wait 36-48hrs for a doctors appointment and does it sound like I would be skiving if I didn't go into work tomorrow?

Oh and it hurts when I swallow and eating is like swallowing rocks.

Could be tonsilitus, phone Dr's back and ask for emergency appoinment

Can tonsilitis start from/with an ulcer I can't remember ever having it. Can't even get on the NHS direct website for advice.

I hate asking for emergency appointments as they always ask what for.

Could be a strep throat, have you tried rinstead pastiles? Or strepsils?

But concure with all above, get emergency appointment .

You can also see your pharmasist or dentist for mouth related illnesses.

Just had a look on NHS direct and it said tonsilitis is just treated with paracetamol unless very severe. Can someone describe to me where the tonsils are?

Well, right now I imagine you can see them! They are the little blobs that you can see at the back of your throat, and if they are infected they might have puss on them. You might be able to see them quite easily.

Actually don't worry, I just googled

Anyway the white patches are on my tonsils, but they are not as swollen as in some of the images on google

If I still feel like crap tomorrow I might at least take the day off work then I still have my appointment for Thurs. The websites (net doctor wasn't NHS - can't get on that ) say only go to GP if it persists after a few days.

I've got some Difflam spray which DH got for my from the pharmacy while I was at work. It has a long arm as the normal stuff I would gargle with for ulcers doesn't reach these when you close off your throat IYSWIM?

Can you not ring your out of hours gp tonight after surgery closes and see if that is any better?
I remember when I got tonsilitus, the first day was bad, day 2 was worse but by day 3 I was in agony and had to deal with 6 month old as well, not good.
Much sympathy.

i've had it before and always get anti b's for it
if you can see lots of pus (thats waht the white blobs are!) then i think you will get anti b's too
call dr surgery soon as they close tonight and go through to the out of hours team, who will see you tonight

It definitely sounds like tonsilitis (I get it a lot). White spots indicate it's bacterial, so you will need antibs. Make an emergency appt in the morning! Hope you feel better soon.

it's farking ridiculous isn't it grrr

it's all to do with blardy swine flu I reckon (not being able to get an appointment). Does sound like tonsilitis. Please do stay at home from work.

I don't know if it's the same spray you have but there's something called chloraseptic throat spray or something like spray which is cherry flavoured and numbs the back of your throat (the pharmacist will know) so at least you can drink without it being agony.

My surgery is always like that anyway foxinsocks. I only stay their as my dr is lovely and I want to see her when I have my next baby (joint antenatal care).

If it is still bad tomorrow I will make an emergency appointment. There were some awfully swollen tonsils on google, mine aren't swollen like that and I don't have a temperature. I'll see how tonight goes. I think it is just general infectedness, hence the spots on my tongue. I can swallow my own saliva btw.

DH has bought me some ice cream to help soothe it.

I had my first ever bout of tonsilitis 2 years ago.
I thought it was 'just a sore throat', and didn't go to the doc's till I'd had it 3 days, and my neck swelled up so much in the evening that I actually text my Dp at work, asking him to promise to look after my kids if anything happened to me!.lol I felt so ill.

Until the anti-b's kicked in the only thing that helped me was gargling with dispersable aspirin.

I hope you start to feel better soon, tonsilitis is awful .

pharmacist once told me as rule of thumb - if you have white spots and blobs on tonsils you need antibiotics; if red blobs you need nurofen etc. as it's not tonsillitis proper, just sore throat from a virus. Sounds like you need to go to the docs for antibiotics!

Well I have another really shitty night, having to wake up and take more paracetamol. I have an ear ache with it too. Have rung the drs and am waiting for the triage nurse to call which is frigging annoying, why can't they just give me an appointment?!

Thanks for all you advice you were all right and I should have insisted on an emergency appointment yesterday. But it did feel a little better by the evening, and I don't feel generally unwell, just in a lot of pain and achey all over.

take some ibuprofen it will help take inflammation down i get tonsillitis all the time its not pleasant and can leave you feeling really awful i found parachute just didnt do anything for the pain really

also gargle warm salt water that helps do that several times throughout the day hope you can get gp appt you will def be given antibiotics hope you feel better soon

If my boys had what you have (and they have a few times) I would say it is tonsilitis. It can be hideous. It is a good reason for a day off as it can be quite contagious.

Do you have a temperature?

It can also get worse and become quinseys(sp?). My dad used to get that by ignoring tonsilitis. Don't google it unless you are feeling brave but you could talk up the abcesses a bit and maybe the triage nurse will take notice for that reason.

Gargling asprin is good if you can manage it but the thing my boys enjoy most is ice pops/cubes/lollies. They are quite soothing.

I have had it myself. You have my sympathies.

I had my tonsils removed aged 19 becuase I had recurrent bouts of tonsilitis and occasionally quinzy's(which needed aspirating) so know how painful it can be and how crap you can feel.

You should push for doc appt as it sounds as though you do need antibiotics(prob penecillin)

Stress to triage nurse how awful you feel, if you dont get appt today then off to out of hours with you tonight.

I found difflam was great when I had bouts of tonsilitis, really numbed up my throat and gargling with slightly salty, tepid water helped too

Thanks all. The nurse finally rang me back (50mins later) and am seeing her at 11.

I am quite prone to ulcers and probably get them on my tonsils about 3 or 4 times a year, it doesn't usually get this bad though, except I can remember one time at uni when my throat was covered in white, then I was swallowing the white stuff which made me feel really sick. IIRC all they gave me was difflam then and they didn't say anything about tonsilitis. That was about 6 or 7 years ago.

So is tonisilitis (I'm going to have to learn how to spell it!) just generally an infection of the tonsils (which I clearly have) or a particular infection?

Oh and I spoke to my lovely boss who said 'Oooh, tonisilitis, it could be weeks, I've had it. You just concentrate on getting better' and when I said 'but I was supposed to have Fri and Monday off as leave 'no no, that counts as sick leave, you can't lose your annual leave to sickness'. I know that it is the company policy anyway, but he is just so understanding. I was only off with a D&V bug 3 weeks ago. My last boss I would have been able to hear his eye rolling over the phone.

Poor you Sounds not nice.

Our GP have really long waits. I ophoned last Monday and was told the next app was the Friday!

Do you have a walk in centre? We have a new GP centre where you can just turn up and wait. I did and was seen within 30 minutes. Was excellent.
