Panicking about ds2 not being vaccinated against mumps.......

We went down the separate jabs route with both ds1 and ds2.

Ds1 finally got his mumps jab a couple of months ago - nearly 2 years late.

I keep seeing report about a mumps epidemic and am v worried ds2 will catch it. The waiting list for his jab is not so long, but he will still have to wait until the latter part of this year according to Direct Health 2000.

Am I panicking unnecessarily?

Not sure Puff - where are you? I heard on the news it was mainly 19-23 yr olds who were being affected. I also heard some doctor or other talking on the radio saying he couldn't understand why everyone was flapping about a relatively harmless disease.

Ds3 is only 8 months so not had his MMR yet and I must admit I'm not worrying about it (but uptake here is fairly high I think).

how old is your ds2, Puff?

even if he gets mumps, v unlikely to be anything but mild.

We're in West London gdk - I was ok about it until I saw a report on the BBC, that's when I started to worry.

When I went to work the other day I had to pick up a boy of 13 from a secure unit. Before he came to us a member of staff had to come and tell us that the other side of the unit had a few kids with mumps.

We're all ok but I wasn't aware that there was mumps epidemic.

I think dh is making me worry more because he keeps talking about infertility as a side effect in males (which I know is possible, but it all keeps whirring around in my head).

I think Mumps can lead to sterility in males can't it?? Think I'll try and keep exposure of ds3 to the outside world to a minimum! No more soft play areas for us.

Mind you, my cousin had mumps as a child and he has a child.

Kama, your dd will be protected by your antibodies - that's why they don't MMR till over a year old - maternal anitbodies still circulate. Anyway, it's not that bad an illness.

Puff, only a worry in pubescent males (I think). fwiw I am not getting ds done (vaxed - with single mumps jab) till he's about 2. If he catches it before then, so be it (bet I don't think like that when it happens!!!!)

Honestly, fecking BBC report - saw it too and would have been stressed had I not been through it with dd. The outbreak is in older males anyway (as Lockets says). Dimwits!

Kama, fwiw I can remember havimg mumps and not too bad (but then again am not pubescent male!)

I only ever worried about dd's measles' jab, tbh.

My boys both had mumps as they were born pre-MMR. A mild illness, no worse than any other childhood one and a lot less washing than the D&V bugs they used to get! Dh caught it from ds1 and he was quite poorly but we have two dd's to show that he suffered no long-lasting effects. Complications are very rare esp in children.

PS I remember my mum being furious when my grandad, who was supposed to be looking after us, let my bro and I play outside to make mud pies, when we both had mumps!

Puff, we used Direct Health 2000, but at the time the waiting list was enormous (there used to be arestriction on the number of mumps veccines that could be imported per day into the UK). Now that that restriction is over, there are plenty of places where you can get it. We understand DH2000 is the bigger provider of SepVax, that's why the weiting list is enormous, but if you go to other more minor but reputable provider you can get it far sooner, sometimes within two weeks. HTH

Sterility definitely not an issue in children pre-puberty. And incredibly, incredibly rare in adults too.
