Panicking about ds2 not being vaccinated against mumps.......

We went down the separate jabs route with both ds1 and ds2.

Ds1 finally got his mumps jab a couple of months ago - nearly 2 years late.

I keep seeing report about a mumps epidemic and am v worried ds2 will catch it. The waiting list for his jab is not so long, but he will still have to wait until the latter part of this year according to Direct Health 2000.

Am I panicking unnecessarily?

Have completely stopped stressing about this now - Mumsnet is great!

Chandra, I think I'll look at an alternative to Direct Health, thanks .

Although young children can have mumps with no long term side effects, can you be sure that they will not pass it on to a teenager or young adult? Or if your child picks up rubella she will not pass it on to a pregnant woman and unborn child? Or if s/he has measles it will not be passed on to a leukaemia patient?

Exactly the same could be said about chickenpox. Or flu.

Yes, I do think it is a good idea to vaccinate against Rubella to reduce the risk of deaf/blindness. But I have to admit that Stleger's post did annoy me a bit as everyone on this thread is TRYING to get their kids vaccinated! I'd like to get my son vaccinated, but the government is deliberately making this near-impossible atm, and that pisses me off a LOT.

yes you are if he's pre-pubescent

if he catches mumps then its an uncomfortable illness but there are no serious side effects

if post-puberty there is a slim chance that there may be an affect on fertility

personally I'm starting to worry about booster shots now - DS has had all his sepvax but no boosters as yet

A friend of DH's has just had mumps. DH is 33 and he didn't have mumps as a child and I've booked him in for a jab next Monday (at his request). There was no waiting involved, had to be a week away as DH wanted the early morning slot so he could go on to work afterwards. Good luck.

Cristina7 · 17/05/2005 11:08

Should have added that DH is booked for the single jab (at least that's what I requested) and it's NHS. We live in London (Wimbledon).

bet he gets MMR and not just mumps though

dropinthe · 17/05/2005 11:21

When I took ds2 for MMR on Friday nurse told me that ds1 who is nearly 3 and a half must have a mmr top up-was in his book but hadn't read

Cristina7 · 17/05/2005 22:10

"bet he gets MMR and not just mumps though "

I think he's so concerned with protecting his precious, he'd put up with that too. Maybe i should check with the surgery beforehand, though.

currently have 7yr old home with mumps, not because he is ill but to ensure he does not infect others. Mild infection, swelling of glands, pain on swallowing. He did not have mmr due to family history of autism, had single measles on nhs. Also have 8month old would be unlikley to show symtoms even if caught it. Not sure where it has come from as no local news of problem and little exposure to age group where majortity of problems lie. re sterility risk, not proven, risk in post puberty if swelling of both testes although majority of these go on to have children.

Cristina7 · 18/05/2005 16:25

I asked a health visitor today if DH would get the mumps or the MMR jab and she said the MMR as they don't do singles on the NHS. She's from a post-natal group, not a nurse from our local surgery, but she's probably right. I'll let you know on Monday what DH had done.
