I woke up 2 weeks ago feeling achey and with sore throat and earache. I felt really rough all day but since then the sore throat and earache have been coming and going. Some days I wake up fine but mid-afternoon it comes on and then I also get hot and cold and have to go and sleep for an hour or so. After that the fever is gone and I'm fine again for a bit. Today I woke up and my throat hurt and also my uvula (the dangly bit) was massively swollen and it felt like it was choking me. I just feel drained and fed up that this throat thing. I can't get off the setee and get dressed today and the dd's are having to watch a lot of TV

a sore throat like that is really horrible you have my sympathy! have you been to the doctors? they might do blood tests to find out what is causing it (could it be glandular fever?)

also, for the sore throat have you tried gargling with tcp? i find that really helpful. or you could try ultra chloraseptic spray

oh and have plenty to drink so your throat doesnt get dried out

hope you start to feel better

psychomum5 · 16/04/2009 10:50

me!!!

I have been to the docs about it. I just feel as tho I am constantly about to come down with tonsilitis, but it never fully develops. feel carppy and tired lots of the time now.

I need to go back actually as they wanted to see me again if I had no improvement after my eye appointment, and I don;t. headaches are less, eye issues are improved, the crappy sore thraot and tiredness is as bad still.

I prescribe rest and TV and MN TBH

wasabipeanut · 16/04/2009 10:56

There is a very nasty tonsilitus virus doing the rounds. I got it a couple of weeks ago and it took me out completely for 2 days and I felt shite for another 2. The sore throat took a full week to shift properly.

Got a slightly sore throat again yesterday and had to go to bed early as felt seriously rough last night. Feel a bit better today but not 100%. My temp (I am ttc) was off the scale this morning.

Boo.

Get well soon everyone!

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 16/04/2009 10:57

thanks psycho - I just know the doc will cite the 'it's a virus' line. So frustrating. Actually now you mention it I've been having loads of weird headaches as well. I really must get up and get dressed as dd's are creating havoc - have just emptied entire box of felt tips and colouring pencils everywhere. We need food so I think I'll drag them round tesco.

I think I need to go to docs mammapiggy really, can't face the thought of tcp and it makes me puke.

Wasabi! (waves to wasabi) sorry you've been struck down by it all too - it's weird cos it seems to be only taking out the mummies, dh and the dd's have been fine.

Had a sore throat all term (ie since Jan). Got some antibiotics end of March as couldn't shift it, but they didn't seem to help. It's just started to feel slightly better now. On breakfast telly today there was someone saying that the tree pollen starts in Feb, so I was wondering if that might be it?

psychomum5 · 16/04/2009 11:04

they did bloods on me, whih did show low WBC, but then we figured it was connected to my eyes (am currently on treatment for iritis again).

am not improving tho with the thraot and tiredness, so I know I need to go back. fingers crossed they can find out what is bugging me, and not fob me off now with weirdy virus......

have fun in tesco

LackaDAISYcal · 16/04/2009 11:04

It isn't glandular fever is it?

might be worth getting checked out at the docs and don't let them fob you off!

mawbroon · 16/04/2009 11:37

I have it too.

I started getitng a slight sore throat about a week ago, but on monday it got worse. I have had a fever since then (so three nights now) and last night it was up to 40 degrees. Today I have a bit of a rash and a terribly sore head.

It can't be GF as I had that in 1997.

Going to the doc this afternoon and fully expect to be told it's a virus and to go away...

TheBolter · 16/04/2009 11:40

Oh me too! I have had for five days now a sore throat, aches, chills and headache that keeps coming and going... one minute I'm OK, the next I feel dreadful and have to go and lie down.

EyeballsintheSky · 16/04/2009 11:43

Add me to the list. I've been ill on and off since Jan. Put it down to DD starting nursery but all she has is a slight runny nose. I've been feverish, bed-ridden (only for three days) and had sore throat after sore throat. It's come back again since yesterday, was almost crying with the pain during the night. Have never had GF so don't know what that is really but I was wondering about tonsilitis?

It's bloody annoying whatever it is. I tried to eat a chocolate doughnut last night and couldn't swallow it. Not happy

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 16/04/2009 14:06

this is really weird that so many of us have the same strange symptoms. Late morning I suddenly felt better and even managed to take the dd's out to lunch but after that we went to the supermarket and my head went really clammy and by the time I got to the checkout I was ready to collapse nearly. I'm going to phone docs now to see if I can get an appointment because I did have contact with a child with slapped cheek a few weeks ago and I need a blood test for that anyway so will also ask about the virus.

MammaPiggy · 16/04/2009 14:10

i know what you mean about not being able to swallow eyeballs, ive had that on two occasions since xmas, its really horrible, first time i could not even drink a glass of water without extreme pain

does seem to be a lot of bugs about recently

hangingbelly - try and put your feet up now if you can!

wahwahwah · 16/04/2009 14:11

I have had this for weeks. Sigh. Also had tonsilitus last year. Even more interesting that I had me tonsils out when I was 4.

MammaPiggy · 16/04/2009 14:12

what ive written there looks really odd, as if i am trying to swallow eyeballs or something

the comment was meant to be directed to eyeballsinthesky, there probably should have been a comma in there somewhere

LadyOfWaffle · 16/04/2009 14:12

I have! Sore throat/ on/off eareache in one ear (so bad a while ago it burst). On/off fever - the other night DH said I was boiling hot but I was so so cold. Just before the burst ear drum I had the worst fever - it shot to 40 degrees and I was dizzy/fainted and just couldn't move. I haven't felt 100% since

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 16/04/2009 16:26

blimey - have just woken up after nearly an hour napping on the settee. The cushion was soaked in sweat and my head was clammy again. Thank goodness my dd's are so good, they are only 3 and 4 but I didn't really have a choice, one minute I'm upright, the next out cold. Now feeling normalish again and temperature back to normal too.

mawbroon · 16/04/2009 17:18

I went to the doc this afternoon. She is pretty sure it's slapped cheek and wants me back tomorrow to do bloods to comfirm it.

She said it could be up to 5 weeks before I am fully recovered. And of course because it's a virus, there's not a lot that can be done. I have to be careful not to overdo it and end up with chronic fatigue.

notsoslimnow · 16/04/2009 18:11

i have this alot and have done ever since having glandular fever as a teenager.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 16/04/2009 21:35

shit mawbroon - I've suspected this but have been putting it out my mind. Not good as I'm pregnant. I'm going for a blood test to check for slapped cheek tomorrow as I was exposed to it about 3 weeks ago. Bloody brilliant.

OP posts:
mawbroon · 16/04/2009 21:39

Oh bugger Hanginbelly. How far on are you?

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 16/04/2009 21:57

18 weeks, was exposed to it a few weeks back and dd's both got ill for a few days but didn't get the rash. I've had my suspicions but have put my head in the sand. Been meaning to phone for the blood test form for ages but at least today has got me motivated to ring up and ask for it. The risks to the baby are quite low really but I could do without it and I'm also fed up of feeling ill now for 2 weeks. Well at least I'll find out if I have it sooner or later. I can't get to the hospital tomorrow as have physio for dd in the morning then a birthday party so will have to wait till Monday.

mawbroon · 16/04/2009 22:01

Good luck hangingbelly. I hope you feel better soon and that you are not too worried by this.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 24/04/2009 13:16

Just wondering how everyone is doing with the sore throat thing? I had about 5 days off and thought it was all over but it's back today and I feel crap again. Can't keep my eyes open, flushed cheeks and temperature as well as sore throat. Meant to be going to supermarket but can't drag myself off the setee and luckily dd is being really good and amusing herself. I had the blood test for slapped cheek on Monday and am awaiting results.

The only thing that shifted this for me a couple of years ago was gargling echinacea tincture in warm water, taking a few drops of tincture regularly for a period and taking 1000mg of vit C. I reckon some manuka honey on a spoon could also help.
