2 lots of antibiotics, still have UTI symptoms

KatyMac · 06/04/2009 21:37

So I have UTI
5 days something or other
5 days trimethoprim

& a clear sample at the hospital (well it has pus but no infection)

So why do I still feel so crap?

I have urgency, frequency, I keep wetting myself , back pain & now thrush

Could it be gynea and not kidney/bladder related?

KatyMac · 06/04/2009 21:41

I suppose - I've not had anything Gynae for a while.......so it's about time for that I guess

Didn't know changes in wee could be gynae

Back pain and frequency sounds like a kidney infection. I have had one before (and plenty of cases of cystitis) but I can't remember if the usual ABs were used to treat the kidney infection. If I were you, I would be back at the GPs first thing tomorrow.

KatyMac · 06/04/2009 21:41

Even with the clear sample?

OP posts:
noddyholder · 06/04/2009 21:43

go back as dumble says.Sometimes the vaginal bacteria get into the bladder i think.I kept having abs and then had a swab and needed a different one.The bacteria can also get into the urine sample giving a false positive

DumbledoresGirl · 06/04/2009 21:51

Well, I don't know about the clear sample, Katymac, but something is clearly not right if you are still suffering all these symptoms. It needs sosrting because if it isn't, you could get a lot worse.

KatyMac · 06/04/2009 21:53

I guess so

I don't feel awful - just low grade crapness, oh & the wetting myself I go from not needing a wee, to a puddle in about 5 seconds and if I do get to the loo in time I do about a teaspoonful

I've had two nasty kidney infections in the last 3 years and the last one was due to the fact that I had cystitis and the abs didn't clear it up and it progressed. Got much worse over a weekend and couldn't get emergency doctor to believe me that it was a kidney infection as my urine sample was totally clear. Eventually got cefalexin abs - had had trimethoprim previously. Saw urologist some weeks later who had no explanation for why my samples kept being clear but said I had definitely had a kidney infection and it had got to the point of septicaemia. So please go back to gps. I really felt so ill both times that nowadays I always warn anyone about this. Hope you feel better soon

KatyMac · 07/04/2009 07:43

Thanks Crescent - I won't ignore it I promise, but the GP may have to wait until tomorrow - I have a bit of a day with work today

Where was the sample clear at? If just in dipstick it may not be clear cos the trimepthprim can mask the infection - my dd has been on this ab for 2 years for re-current uti and sometimes have problem of it masking the infection. I would def go back and ask sample to be sent away to see if anything grows

KatyMac · 07/04/2009 21:52

It was a red topped send away that was clear (the same sample was dipstick positive iyswim)

Hi Katy, it's scrooged.
Have they done an ultrasound to see if you have a cyst on your kidney?

I can't believe you are still ill!

KatyMac · 07/04/2009 21:56

No - justthe CT - they won't do anything else as it was clear & I am better

Which I am - I do not have cold sweat inducing pain

I just have a grumbly unwell feeling

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 07/04/2009 21:58

People can get an absess following a kidney stone, it sounds like you have one of these if there's pus in your urine. They would have sent off a sample to see if the antibiotics you are on would get rid of any bacteria. The thrush can be a side effect of the antibiotics. How long have you been having bladder problems? What are they doing to help you?

KatyMac · 07/04/2009 22:01

Any bladder problems or just this time

Incontenent for 6 yrs after DD

Ok. So it's unlikely to be connected to the UTI/puss then. I'm guessing you saw an incontinence nurse for pelvic floor excercises etc?

KatyMac · 07/04/2009 22:09

Yes 3 - ne in London, one in Liverpool & one in Norfolk

But it's lovely & fixed after the TVT

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 07/04/2009 22:18

Hmm. I remember you saying you had a funny, loopy ureter. I'm guessing that if you were unable to have the IVU because you have an allergy to the dye that it's possibe that there's a stricture in this (where it's narrow in some parts), causing a back up of urine in the kidneys which is what's causing your pain (?????????????). I am guessing though. An IVU would show this up. It's possible you are feeling crap because of this (I really am guessing though). What are you drinking? I am also guessing you are turning into a fish bu now and have what resembles gills on your back?

You do know I'm not a medic don't you.

KatyMac · 07/04/2009 22:21

between 3 & 4 litres a day

Which goes a long way at a tablespoon a wee

The GP corrected me apparently my urethra isn't a U bend it should be straighter than it was before

OP posts:
KatyMac · 07/04/2009 22:22

About you not being a medic.....am starting to wonder the same about my GP

OP posts:
FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 07/04/2009 22:22

Hmm. What are you drinking? Is it cranberry juice or water?

A tablespoon a wee? Hmm. How often are you going to the loo?

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 07/04/2009 22:24

I did train as a paeds nurse for a couple of years, not I'm into radiography so not quite a novice, not an expert though so I'm kind of making educated guesses IYKWIM.

KatyMac · 07/04/2009 22:25

Water or peach juice cranberry & my IBS don't get on (neither do OJ/AJ/coffee)

I could do Lemonade or coke - but I am trying to give up

I have far to much salt & sugar in my diet

OP posts:
FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 07/04/2009 22:27

What are you drinking?
