twas my 40th on thurs. I like red wine. I have been drinking it on and off for a few yrs. Over int Spain at my mums we drank it in the evenings, no problem, just bog standard red wine.

On thurs day I had a large glas before i went out in the evening . (I'd had a good lunch btw so no empty tummy) I then had two and a half glasses with a meal in a restaunrant, and we were there 4 hours. I ate a fair amount, had two glasses of water.

The wine was a merlot, so prob about 13%, at a guess.

The hangover was like i had been poisoned, D+V, for ten hours.

I have read up on sulphites, etc... there doesn't seem to be any conclusive reason why one should have such a reaction. It's very weird. Is it best to stick to lower red's like 11 % or less.

Are you sure it wasn't something you ate?

Buda · 10/01/2009 16:42

D&V doesn't sound like a hangover tbh. Could be a bug or food poisoning.

twoluvlykids · 10/01/2009 16:46

must have been the food - find out if anyone else in your party has been ill.

40 - all down hill now, you know!!!

could be noro?

compo · 10/01/2009 17:01

were the 2 and a half glasses with the meal large glasses? if so you had over a bottle which would make you ill!

cheshirekitty · 10/01/2009 17:34

HAPPY BIRTHDAY. If you are used to drinking red wine, it does not sound as if you have had enough for d and v. Sounds like it could be a tummy bug. Ask your friends if any of them have had similar problems.

piratecat · 10/01/2009 17:41

no noone else had this, i have askes a few people today. I had this reaction to red wine a few months ago, but on that occasion i put it down to the fact i hadn't eaten very much. Yet when i said about it to the mates i was out with they were astounded, as they all said 'but you hardly had anything!'
I also had this reaction about 3 yrs ago.

We had an indian meal, and I ate a fair amoutn of rice and naan etc...

The glasses, well all i know is that we got four glasss out of a bottle. So I had just over half a bottle. The wine was 14 %. So pretty strong.

i have had to stop drinking red wine recently because it has been giving me asthma, so i sympathise

DeborahBorr · 10/01/2009 17:56

Do you know, I really really hate how difficult it is to get lower alcohol red wine. I hate 14% stuff. I avoid all Australian/American stuff etc because just too strong. Easier to stick to French. I'm sure teh sulphites would trigger asthma, I'm seem to recall reading that??

expatinscotland · 10/01/2009 18:04

Sounds more like poisoning than the wine.

IotasCat · 10/01/2009 18:08

Sounds like it was the food to me too. Hangovers don't usually include diahorrea, just vomiting

IotasCat · 10/01/2009 18:12

Damn I knew I couldn't spell diarrhoea

piratecat · 10/01/2009 19:13

yes the diarrhea was petty awful, but i have had this before in conjunction with drinking. I was sweating, and just didn't know what to do with myslef.
I think it's a bad reaction to alcohol, like poisoning almost i guess.

was just reading another thread about the effects of wine. I am still feeling a bit sicky, but now realsie there are bugs going round too. Maybe it was a combination? Still doesn't explain the other times i have had this tho!

I went out on sunday for a family member's birthday lunch, and was obsesed with reading the alcohol content on the wine bottles on my table. Didn't touch a drop tho!

piratecat, i always have d (d&v) after any amount of alcohol.

piratecat · 15/01/2009 12:05

really? i wonder what it is? I have googled and not come up with much. Alcohol poisoning seems to refer to unconciousness rather than the physical aspects. I had some long vodka drinks on new yr's eve and was fine the next day.

I think sometimes emotional well being can effect the way alcohol 'sits' in my stomach iyswim. Yet these episodes have been so few and far between, that i never questioned the alcohol content, esp as i had drunk so little.

I was ill like it after my wedding, this was emotional stress on top of lots of booze and little food, so i understood this! mind you that was about 12 yrs ago!!

Hi piratecat

So weird, this happens to me sometimes.

I have got very regimented about tracking it and weirdly this is what I have worked out:

if I drink ANY alcohol on last day of my period, the next day I am absolutely ruined. Violently vomiting, for about 10 hours, diarrhoea, shaking, horrendous headache, cramps etc. It is like poisoning - I can't even keep water down when I get this.

Now, I have to mark on the calendar in bold pen when its time of the month and simply ensure I don't drink on that day.

It is only since I had dd and mainly with wine.

It happened a few times and no-one could believe it was drink related as sometimes I only had half a glass but the same reaction the next day. Weirdly, I get through the night fine but it all starts the minute I get out of bed.

So, I now know I cannot let a drop pass my lips on the last day of my period. The rest of the month, I can drink normally (I have always had good tolerance and can drink a bottle of wine with no real effects apart from this one dreaded day)

xxx

Helsbels4 · 15/01/2009 12:10

I sometimes have an upset stomach when I've drunk too much and I drink red wine too Maybe combined with the Indian meal, it was a bit too much for your tummy? I wouldn't give up the wine just yet

piratecat · 15/01/2009 12:18

aznerak

omg that's exactley what i have. the cramps, and all. it's good to hear from you!!

i am on the mini pill so i don't have a period. do i even have a cycle? i am not sure.

OP posts:
lilacclaire · 15/01/2009 12:19

I never know when its my period time (mirena) so I can't track it that way!!

piratecat · 15/01/2009 12:20

was going to say. same here, i can't keep water down, and it only starts when i have been awake about 20 mins. I also have the feeling that the night before i must have been paryletic, even tho i know i wasn't. Its horrible, and weird.

BTW Sainsbury have launched a range of wines that they are calling 10%, because of their lower alcohol content, and there is a red in the range.

I haven't tried the red as I'm more of a white drinker. In the whites, there is a Pino Grigio and a Chardonnay and they also do a rose which is very palatable.

I honestly don't think anyone would be able to tell that they were lower alcohol wines.

piratecat · 15/01/2009 12:24

sounds good!!

i don't like white or rose wine, and they are the only ones that tend to have a lower overall %. God i sound wine obsessed!! I just want to avoid that hangover.

or dehydration as I think it boils down too.

aznerak · 15/01/2009 12:27

piratecat - am so glad it isn't just me.

god, I feel like I am truly dying when it is one of those days. I am very lucky as my periods have always been incredibly predictable (to within an hour!) so I am able to work it out, and avoid that day.

Maybe it is the same for you but you just don't know your cycle
