twas my 40th on thurs. I like red wine. I have been drinking it on and off for a few yrs. Over int Spain at my mums we drank it in the evenings, no problem, just bog standard red wine.

On thurs day I had a large glas before i went out in the evening . (I'd had a good lunch btw so no empty tummy) I then had two and a half glasses with a meal in a restaunrant, and we were there 4 hours. I ate a fair amount, had two glasses of water.

The wine was a merlot, so prob about 13%, at a guess.

The hangover was like i had been poisoned, D+V, for ten hours.

I have read up on sulphites, etc... there doesn't seem to be any conclusive reason why one should have such a reaction. It's very weird. Is it best to stick to lower red's like 11 % or less.

I must admit a red wine hangover is the worst. And I have noticed that it's more likely to make me ill even if I haven't had loads. But it is often higher in alcohol.I am very careful now to only buy lower alcohol wines, Italian or French - some of the New World stuff is outrageous.

Must say that it doesn't sound like a reaction to booze though.

Did you have a particularly creamy dish?

Its just that I was once very ill when I went out for a meal and ate Mushroom Stroganoff and drank red wine. I was convinced that it wasn't a good combination.

I also find that I can't drink red wine as a "going out" drink. I can only drink it with or immediately after a meal. If I have it as a drink in the pub for example it makes me very drunk, very quickly and I have been known to be ill afterwards (on small amounts too, less than half a bottle)

No-one believes that it is a reaction to the wine but believe me, I have been very religious in tracking this as I was SO ill several times I had to work out what was causing it.

It is honestly like poisoning.

My parents own a villa in France so we only buy wine locally - most is organic so lower in sulphates anyway. It certainly isn't a true hangover - in general, I can consume a bottle of wine with no real problems but on this certain day, even a sip (tasting my husband's wine) is enough to send me reeling the next day.

The weird thing is, we taste our wines in France and only buy what we like. We do end up with several bottles of exactly the same wine sourced direct from the wine maker. One day, i can drink the entire bottle and next day, feel right as rain, then on by "poison day", if I so much as taste the very saem wine (that I consumed a few days earlier!), I am totally and utterly ruined the next day for about 10 hours.

As I say, no-one ever believes it is a reaction. Not sure its a reaction to alcohol per se but certainly something IN the wine.

aznerak, i am with you, and you are the first person who has ever had similar to me.

my mum lives in spain, and on the few occasions i have been out there, we have drunk the cheapest wine. about 4 euros for 5 litres, just plain old vino tinto. I would have 3-4 large glasses of that 7 nights a week!! I bought some merlot on offer, at xmas, and mum was drinking it, but i had a sip of it one night and felt like omg this is vile. I don't know why! It felt strong, it felt like poison in a glass!

I think your theory is a good one. I am interested to look up it the calender the dates last yr i had this reaction. will report back. !

if you want to email me rather than post here, email me at [email protected] ( can then reply using my usual email address and not my cake making business address!)

i am the same but can't drink around ovulaation - get the worst headaches on 1 glass of anything. and have had d and v with hangovers too...

can no longer touch red wine - was ok when living abroad as it was local organic but back in the uk I can't risk it. white wine is dodgy sometimes too - and everythign is dodgy midcycle.

could easily be the wine piratecat- oh and my mum was the same!

piratecat · 15/01/2009 12:59

well the dates are a bit hit and miss. I have to be vigilant about the red wine,
but i LIKE red wine!!

must be hormones, i think that is a defining factor.

This happened to me a year ago (after 3/4 bottle of red wine) It took me a while to work out that it was actually noro virus (the projectile vomiting was a clue!)

womblingfree · 15/01/2009 23:37

Was it Merlot that set you off last time?

It might just be that type of wine. Since having DD I can't drink Chardonnay (although I'm fine with other wines )

piratecat · 16/01/2009 08:24

hi, it was merlot yes, but i drink that regularly. I am going to give it up tho and move to a less strong one. Sometimes these wines can be 14%!!

OP posts:
womblingfree · 16/01/2009 10:02

I drank Chardonnay all the time before DD, can just about get away with a blend of it with something else providing I have no more than 1/2 bottle and with lots of food!

I think it's the oak.
