Found a lump

I found a lump in my breast about 2 weeks ago and as yet haven't gone to the doctors. It is quite deep in the middle and there definitely isn't a matching one in the other side. I am 25 so am I right in thinking it is probably a cyst or hormonal? I know I need to go to the doctors but for some reason I am a bit scared of going. Is is ok to give it another couple of weeks and see if it is hormonal or should I just bite the bullet and go and risk them saying its nothing?

sm, I had a cyst too once, years ago. This feels very different to me. The cyst was hard and smooth, almost like a small pea to the side of my nipple. This is much larger, maybe the size of a 50p coin and about 1 cm thick. it's also uneven, rough round the edges. I'll be glad to get it checked.

Perhaps you could ring the hospital and find out about taking children? There was a lady there with a tiny baby and one of the nurses looked after him while she had the mammogram but as the waiting room was small and crowded I don't think it would have been suitable for an older child. Depends on the hospital I suppose, if they have the space and the staff available they might not mind. After all, they want to encourage you as much as possible, not make it impossible for you to keep your appointment.

mummylonglegs · 10/03/2005 14:16

I did phone, pixel, as I hoped to change the time of the appointment. They said it was ok to bring her so long as she sat in the pram ... hmmm ... wonder how many 2.5 year old's they've had lately... I'm just hoping that she'll have a nap for the beginning of the appointment and then be in that dozy half-awake state for a bit more of the time and then distracted by some toys I'll bring and willing to stay put. If she's in the room with me she'll be interested enough by what's happening, I just wasn't sure if she'd be allowed to be in the room during the mammogram.

How did you get on yesterday anchovies?

Pixel, did you get your results yet?

I've got my appointment tomorrow and am feeling pretty worried ...

Lonelymum · 15/03/2005 14:15

Oh just seen this and really sorry for all of you going through this horrible time, especially my old friend MLL. Hope all goes well for all of you.

pixel · 15/03/2005 14:51

I've just got home from appointment. Not the result I was hoping for unfortunately. They are not sure what it is so are going to take it out anyway and then test it. I've always dreaded having an operation and was really really hoping I wouldn't have to have one. I've got to go back next week to find out if they are just going to take out the lump or a piece round it as well. Good news is it's apparently quite near the surface otherwise wouldn't have been spotted.

Lonelymum · 15/03/2005 14:53

So sorry pixel, but try to stay positive. It is definitely better out than in as they say and, speaking as someone who has had a major op (but nothing to do with breast lumps) it won't be that bad for you. All the best.

pixel · 15/03/2005 15:01

Thanks a lot Lonelymum, I think I'm starting to calm down a bit now. I know I'm very lucky to catch it so early, it should all be straightforward. It's just eeeek hospitals, anasthetic,MRSA etc. Still, with a bit of luck the worry should make me lose weight and I'll be lovely and slim for my sister's wedding!

Marina · 15/03/2005 15:03

Very best of luck to you all, hadn't seen this thread until just now. Wishing you all the best of outcomes.

anchovies · 15/03/2005 15:10

Thanks for asking MLL

I had my appointment yesterday, had an ultrasound and fine needle aspiration which was all fine in terms of pain! He said lump will have to be removed although they dont know what it is yet so have got to go back for needle test results in 2 weeks. Was trying to get info from him but he wasn't very forthcoming!

Sorry I didn't see your post pixel. I am really sorry to hear the news wasn't good. Make sure you let us know how you get on next week.

Not been online for a while. Good luck anchovies and Pixel. I really hope the results are negative.

pixel · 15/03/2005 16:16

Anchovies, looks like we're in the same boat then. The doc told me it's got to come out even though they don't know what it is. I've been told that the op will be within a month.

Good luck, I hope you get some more info soon. I,m on the south coast btw, don't know where you are. How weird would it be if we ended up in the same hospital!

mummylonglegs · 15/03/2005 21:00

Anchovies and Pixel, I'm really sorry to hear you've both got to have the lumps removed. I'm still to find out what's going to happen to me. I should know a bit more by the end of tomorrow I think.

Will keep you posted!

mummylonglegs · 16/03/2005 12:07

Not posting for any particular reason now except pure nerves. I'm off for my appointment in 10 mins and feeling VERY nervous ...

pindy · 16/03/2005 12:16

Good luck mummylonglegs - thinking of you.

Lonelymum · 16/03/2005 13:01

How did it go Mummylonglegs? Surely someone must have some good news. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

pixel · 16/03/2005 18:11

Mummylonglegs, hope everything was ok today.

anchovies · 16/03/2005 18:16

Thanks everyone. It was a horrible afternoon as dd's very ill with a cough and had to sit in a dire cramped waiting room with a friend of mine she hardly knows. We were there 3 1/2 hours!

I had a mammogram, ultrasound and a needle biopsy. The mammogram was the worst, made me feel like my breast was about to pop.

Anyway, it all confirms there is a lump but it's quite 'granular' and only solid in places so depending on the biopsy results they'll remove it if seems malignant and will monitor it if benign. So similar to you guys although you're definitely up for surgery and I may get away with it.

I'm just so glad at the moment the initial waiting stage is over.

pindy · 17/03/2005 14:13

When will you know the results? Hope they don't keep you waiting too long.

Evs09 · 17/03/2005 15:42

Mummylonglegs,Anchovies and Pixel wishing you all the very very best. Hope all goes well. Will be in my thoughts xx

albert · 17/03/2005 16:02

Don't panic, stay strong. You are in good hands and doing the right thing. I've had 2 scares and they have both been negative so you can never tell.

pindy · 17/03/2005 16:51

A friend of mine had the same thing last year - she had the lump removed and she is great - no problem - stay positive

Lonelymum · 17/03/2005 17:17

Poor you Mummylonglegs, it sounds horrendous. I had no idea a mamogram was so unpleasant, I thought it was just like an xray. Anyway, when do you hear your results? Stay positive darling!
