Very scared, what’s wrong with me? Feeling confused and drowsy indoors but fine as soon as I go outside

Almost every day for a year now I get this horrible feeling, that I’m having trouble explaining. But I’ll try.

its like very reduced awareness and alertness. Like mental confusion, lethargic, disoriented, Drowsy. Like I am not really taking in what’s around me. I could be looking at screen and not really taking in what I’m seeing. Just like I been drugged I guess? Like I’m just sitting there staring into space not really taking in what’s around me. Very weak too.

i had extremely low blood pressure a couple times in my life and it’s kind of like this.

this feeling lasts hours and hours. I literally can not get anything done especially recently.

gp is saying it’s mental/anxiety

But the weird thing is I noticed this goes away as soon as I step outside. Like the second I step outside.

it’s also better if I spend all day not in the house and worse if I spend more time indoors

I also haven’t experienced this anywhere else outside my home.

But other 2 people living with me don’t experience this.

anyone know what this can be?

Yes definitely try to get someone out to check for mold just to make sure

OtterlyAstounding · 20/09/2026 01:16

It sounds obvious, and might be easier said than done, but is moving an option? If you're feeling this terrible only in your home and not anywhere else, then regardless of the cause, it seems like the simplest fix. And if it then starts up in your new house, you'll know it's an issue within you, and not caused by environmental factors.

no

@Noelle101 please look up the symptoms of 'chronic and systemic of Mold Toxicity' because you certainly seem to have at least some of the symptoms, including the brain fog you described in your OP. Then make an emergency appointment with your GP. Hopefully, s/he will be able to steer you in the directions you need to go.

But, first of all, before you do amything else, please move out of your home until it has been treated, and given the all clear! I do hope that you have somewhere else you can go to cheaply, and without too much interuption to your daily life. Do your parents live close enough for you to stay with them, or a friend?
Good luck OP with both your diagnosis, and any treatment you and/or your home might need.🌻

This sounds so much like the effect mould has on my daughter. Even a tiny bit of dampness will affect her now because she’s become so sensitive to it from repeated exposure over time. If youve had walls that were covered in black mould, it would have taken major work to get rid of it and it sounds as though it was just covered up.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/09/2026 01:39

If it is only happening in your home then it’s got to be a be a problem in your home. Just to echo everyone else about a gas check for carbon monoxide poisoning or toxic mould.
Are you having any hallucinations

mullers1977 · 19/09/2026 22:32

Would say you have ADHD - I'm like this, outside of the house I have clarity and can concentrate; in the house, I can't and feel untethered

This is definitely NOT the symptoms of ADHD. You don't simply have ADHD in the house, then suddenly not have it outside. It affects every part of your life, plus it doesn't start in the middle of an otherwise normal life. It starts in childhood.
I guess you don't have it, do you....

HappyAmberTurtle · 20/09/2026 05:46

You can get the air checked inside your house to see how mouldy it is and compare different rooms. I had this done years ago. They also take a reading from outside for comparison.

Do you have a smart meter?

Toastytina · 20/09/2026 06:32

Phone Cadent.

Roselilly36 · 20/09/2026 06:43

Is your room damp, have you tried dehumidifier? I use mine when drying washing indoors when I am unable to hang it out and when I switch it on it shows me the level of humidity in the room and I see the level reduce as the washing dries.

Another suggestion I would make is to buy an air purifier, we have a small one in our bedroom room, it really makes a difference.

You're breathing out CO2 all the time. That's carbon dioxide. It's CO i.e. carbon monoxide that is dangerous.

CO2 is just as dangerous to health - we were at a holiday cottage last week where the boiler was ruled unsafe as too much CO2 being released , causes similar symptoms to monoxide poisoning

lessglittermoremud · 20/09/2026 07:10

If it only happens when you are at home and you have spent substantial amounts of time elsewhere and haven’t felt the same it must be environmental..
As someone else has said you can get super sensitive carbon monoxide alarms, I suspect it’s the mould that’s been covered over.
Simplest solution if you can’t find anything that’s causing it would be to move, is this an option?

babyproblems · 20/09/2026 07:23

Go and stay somewhere else for a week or more and see if you feel the same.

I also thought it sounded like some sort of air borne thing in your property.

TroysMammy · 20/09/2026 07:47

Sick Building Syndrome?

SevenYellowHammers · 20/09/2026 07:49

Everything is pointing to Carbon Monoxide to me. Your alarm is faulty or inaccurate. Get out right now. Stay the night at a friend’s or book a cheap hotel. Contact
landlord and council environmental health first thing Monday.

WildFatball · 20/09/2026 07:57

It definitely sounds like mould. If the walls were black with mould what did they do to get rid of it? You need to check this out as a priority as mould is extremely harmful to health.

I wanted to add,

we had flooding in our home many times.

I don’t see any mold but

I remember 8 years ago my room was being fixed after the flooding damage and I saw the walls were all very black. Just completely every inch covered in mold.

they said they’ll take care of it and not to worry, but I’m not worried they just covered it it plasterboard

“
@Noelle101 After flooding the house has to be dried out properly before adding new plaster board . I’d be stripping a sheet off and seeing what’s going on behind.

Also tell the housing company you need the someone out with damp meters testing as your unwell and think it could be mould .

Before I reached the part you mentioned low blood pressure that’s where my first thought went . Has your GP been checking your blood pressure when you go to an appointment? If not ask for it doing regular. Also you can buy your own machine to test at home . Ask the gp to check you oxygen levels. Or take your self to hospital for a fill
check.

Sounds like your disassociating..I can be exactly the same ,I was like that the whole time I was at school , because I was struggling to cope with the situation,so I think it was my brains way of trying to protect me ,
But I have a lot of diagnosis, autism,OCD ,ADHD , anxiety, depression..so I expect it's one of those causing it

One of those causing it for me .. wasn't meaning causing it for you op .
Anyway sounds like I'm way of the mark, looks like everyone else has solved your issue and it's the mould in your home
Hope you get it sorted
Good luck hon x

cartagenagina · 19/09/2026 22:20

You need to uncover where the mould was and see if they actually removed it or put a bit of plaster board over it.

i thought the problem with mould is the spores you inhale.

if none are visible and are under plasterboard (so can’t escape) why would it cause this issue?

also mould needs air to grow.

I guess you don't have it, do you....

That's very dismissive and it's obvious from the grammar that the poster does have ADHD.

I also have it and I find something similar. That the stimulus of being outside the house racks up my energy levels then when I get home those energy levels are so low that I sit in my recliner bed for the next 3 or 4 hours to restore them.

I agree with you completely that it does not fit what the OP is describing but there's no need to be so sharp.

I also have a mould allergy and that does fit.

Have you checked the carbon monoxide levels in your home?

I was just about to say this !!

CO² is nowhere near as dangerous to health as carbon monoxide.

Carbon monoxide kills by itself.

Carbon dioxide only kills when it's removed so much oxygen from the air that there's not enough oxygen left for you to breath.

OP you talk about living with 2 older people. Are these your parents and you are an adult who has not left home?

It's it possible that the other occupants of the house are toxic, not the house itself?

Girlwithavibe · 20/09/2026 08:30

Because you mentioned it's been flooded several times and it was completely covered in black on the walls was this took off or was it covered over and have U had a positive air unit installed ?
Because if that mould was only covered by plasterboard it's sounds very much like U have mould exposure!
Do U have problems with your nose stuffy or sneezing coughing ?
I think U need to get a damp proofer in and say where u saw the mould originally and get them to explore and see if it's under any plasterboard if it is u could have a case against the building people who own the property
Hope U feel better soon x
