Very scared, what’s wrong with me? Feeling confused and drowsy indoors but fine as soon as I go outside

Almost every day for a year now I get this horrible feeling, that I’m having trouble explaining. But I’ll try.

its like very reduced awareness and alertness. Like mental confusion, lethargic, disoriented, Drowsy. Like I am not really taking in what’s around me. I could be looking at screen and not really taking in what I’m seeing. Just like I been drugged I guess? Like I’m just sitting there staring into space not really taking in what’s around me. Very weak too.

i had extremely low blood pressure a couple times in my life and it’s kind of like this.

this feeling lasts hours and hours. I literally can not get anything done especially recently.

gp is saying it’s mental/anxiety

But the weird thing is I noticed this goes away as soon as I step outside. Like the second I step outside.

it’s also better if I spend all day not in the house and worse if I spend more time indoors

I also haven’t experienced this anywhere else outside my home.

But other 2 people living with me don’t experience this.

anyone know what this can be?

It could well be the mould, some people can be sensitive to mould spores like pollen.

IndiaFeatherstone · 19/09/2026 21:48

Has to be your home surely ? Mould seems likely from what you have described but not sure how you’d test that ?

Has everyone missed this?

Though they have been complaining of certain health issues over years since we moved, e.g fatigue

but I’m not sure if it same cause, they are elderly and they still get this when they step outside

You can get a damp reader thing that you stick in your walls with two small metal probes and it reads the damp levels. You could try that to see if there's an issue.

comeondover · 19/09/2026 21:51

Oh I cross-posted with your post about mould. That sounds horrific and you need to get out of there. It's not unusual for some members of a household not to be affected, or not as much. Testosterone is protective, for one thing. And there's a genetic mutation called HLA-DR that makes it harder for the body to clear if you have it.

Have you checked the carbon monoxide levels in your home?

But if it was carbon monoxide poisoning, the other two people would also be having symptoms. And they’re not.

comeondover · 19/09/2026 21:52

Can you stay somewhere else for a few days? Taking very little with you

They have been complaining of fatigue and not feeling great last few years

but they thought it’s just aging (they are much older) and they still experience this when they step outside

Seems like it

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 19/09/2026 21:54

Certain moulds are very toxic, carbon monoxide leaks, gas cooker... a previous comment was correct re many Carbon Monoxide alarms not picking up readings until levels have already reached dangerous levels. Get your environment checked.

summater · 19/09/2026 21:54

Have you got any gas in the house though if the boiler isn't in your house.

Mould can affect different people differently.

There has been a serious mould incident in the house.

Noelle101 · 19/09/2026 21:56

I’ll post this again so more can see

I wanted to add, we had flooding in our home many times.

when we moved in home was very moldy too which we fixed.

I don’t see any mold now but I remember 8 years ago my room was being fixed after the flooding damage and I saw the walls were all very black. Just completely every inch covered in mold.

they said they’ll take care of it and not to worry, but I’m not worried they just covered it it plasterboard

Do you suffer with anxiety / health anxiety or any other MH issues?

summater · 19/09/2026 22:00

It is probably the mould, it will affect people differently though so the other people in the house could be fine

I had this

i Had Addisons disease.

I only realised when I started to crave salt. Otherwise I’d of described it as I felt heavy….flu like. But vague vague symptoms.

comeondover · 19/09/2026 22:02

You can get a dust sampling kit from Mould Lab . They're not cheap but it would tell you what's in the house. You can also (privately) get a urine test that tells you what mycotoxins you're dealing with, and/or an OAT - organic acid test - that gives an idea about colonisation. Really, it would be good to see someone who specialises in the treatment of people with mould exposure, but the NHS has little to offer unless you have aspergillosis, which is quite specific. There are functional practitioners if you want to go that route.

Do you own, rent privately or is it LA/HA?

If you rent privately, move if possible.

If LA/HA, get a doctor to advise mould issues then start demanding corrective action - proper corrective action.

Addisons disease also causes very low blood pressure

It should have been removed - the plasterboard or whatever it was growing on - under containment and negative pressure. Treating it in situ or covering over it is not the way

People are mentioning Carbon Monoxide - this is C0 , Carbon Dioxide is CO2 and is just as damaging to health but not picked up by a monoxide tester

Test it now

I got my boiler serviced the other day and the guy told me I need a new one. It may beep when you test but the actuaL Sensor may be out of date! He said new ones have the expiry date if it doesn’t need to replace after 5 years

What happens if you keep your windows wide open?
