Diarrhoea and struggling to keep water down

WatermelonForBreakfast · 24/06/2026 17:03

Mid forties female. Ate watermelon and didn't cut it which I think has caused diarrheoa. Water not staying down at all - time from drinking to going is like a minute. I'm edging towards dehydration. How do I manage this?

If you have any good quality rock salt, you can crunch on a larger crystal and sip tiny amounts of water to dilute it to keep you going for now

DancingAtLunacy · 26/06/2026 04:25

Sorry, posted before finishing. Sounds like it’s a reaction as opposed to a viral bug? Sublingual soluble Imodium will be your best friend tomorrow. But - speaking from experience - sounds like your gut needs some rebooting. I’m very vulnerable to strep, as in, I’ll be prescribed hardcore abx on my own honor rather than let it become full blown. Early December I knew I was coming down with it, so did a broad spectrum course for a week, which destroys all gut flora, but better than the alternative. Unfortunately as soon as I recovered, I got norovirus 😭 My stomach wasn’t right until March. I managed to fix it by diligently doing daily pre and pro biotics (research the best quality for women), eating tons of kimchi etc, even made my own kefir lol. It takes a minute, but it works. And feck you to my family member who is a female GP(!) who told me I’d probably just have to live like that now. The fuck I did, and neither do you ;)

WatermelonForBreakfast · 26/06/2026 05:48

I've spoken to GP, doesn't think it was fruit or anything else, just quite a lot of viruses going round, drink water and take imodium if I want to. Stick it out basically.

Bloody hell it's brutal. I understand its the bodies way it evolved to kill things but blimey.

When it's gone I'm going full pelt on the gut health.

In the immediate aftermath I took supplements from Optibac, specifically ones concentrated with S Boulardii. I followed the regime recommended plus all the other gut healing stuff I’d researched, and after a few months it’s night and day but it was a bit of a slog. Truly hope you feel better soon, it’s miserable SadFlowers

Still here. Every time I get comfy I have to go and shit.

Shut this poo factory down. I go on strike.

At least you are retaining you sense of humour - your comments are making me laugh 😀Thinking of you, get well soon.

EverardDeTroyes · 26/06/2026 21:45

Sounds like norovirus to me. You don't have to feel or be sick to have it. I only had to think about pooing for liquid to come out of my rear end when I had it. I didn't eat anything for a couple of days and didn't drink much either but I was lucky in that I had it during the winter so wasn't trying to rehydrate during a heatwave. Just keep sipping away. Maybe ice lollies or ice cubes might be easier? I had moist toilet tissue for wiping. Bugger the drains.

WatermelonForBreakfast · 24/06/2026 17:04

Didn't wash it. Fucking hell if I didn't cut it that would be ludicrous 😂

I was thinking you meant you'd eaten it like an apple 😳😂
Hope you're better soon, it must be brutal in this heat 🥵

WatermelonForBreakfast · 27/06/2026 01:27

Moist toilet tissue will be a definite improvement if this ever happens again. I think I'd improve the experience by vomiting earlier on too.

I’ve had something similar today, it’s unlike any type of dose of the shits I’ve ever had, and I have IBS and various health issues that can upset my stomach a lot.

The only way I could think of to describe was like I was a malfunctioning Mr Whippy Ice cream machine, where just when you think it’s back to normal, it’s starts spluttering again.

I hope you’re over the worse op. My brain is still processing, hence why I’m posting on MN at 3am because im still in WTF WAS THAT mode. 😂

Malfunctioning Mr Whippy 😂 Yes its exactly like that. I'll be okay for four hours and then my bodies like here's four hours of the shits every fifteen minutes!

I don't know if I posted about the luminous yellow phase. There was a luminous yellow phase. I'm currently deciding whether to block that out from my memory! It was pretty grim 🤣

If it continues and you’re not drinking, go to a and e. Dehydration is actually really serious, especially if you get low potassium. Dh landed in hospital with it and had a campobylacter bug (not sure what caused it).

justasking111 · 27/06/2026 09:39

Mine went on for three weeks before I phoned the GP. He gave me mebeverine to stop the spasms. Bliss.

WatermelonForBreakfast · 28/06/2026 03:06

I slept well and had a pretty good day but it unravelled in the evening. I had oats in the morning and toast at lunch and some green juice. I wasn't sure what to have in the evening so started with some broth. That went right through and I've had four hours of gurgly guts again.

I've lost half a stone since Tuesday which is fine as I'm overweight but I feel so hungry- too hungry to sleep, my tummy hurts and I'm not sure if it's hunger ache or belly ache. Just tried some banana to settle it.

I wonder if I could just drink apple juice for energy. Miserable about prospect of another day without energy.

Argh poor you! Try an ice cube. Melt it in your mouth so you’re getting a little bit of constant water.

AurielleBaies · 28/06/2026 03:20

Sorry just read this has been happening for a while! I think you need to speak with a doctor.

Summer26 · 28/06/2026 04:46

OP I had thid years ago a little vomiting more the other end. My idiot GP did a pregnancy test. A few days later I went back to s different one I had to stay in hospital hooked up to all these ectrolyte solutions. Potassium affects your heart rhythm ring 111

Summer26 · 28/06/2026 04:48

Also vomiting luminous yellow can be bile you should ring

WatermelonForBreakfast · 28/06/2026 04:56

It's not been vomiting, just diarrheoa. The little bit of banana helped. I think I'm going to try the bananas, rice, grated apple today.

I don't think the toast is helping.
