Bad breath that isn't mouth/teeth related?

Mich1986 · 17/02/2026 17:26

i am so embarrassed to be writing this, but it’s becoming a huge issue for me and I don’t know what to do about it.
I have constant bad breath, my teeth are healthy, no cavities or gum disease, I can’t see any tonsils stones, I’ve had an endoscopy and dont have acid reflux. I am brushing 3 times a day and using mouthwash in between, I am having to chew gum constantly. I’ve tried different toothpaste and mouthwash, oral probiotics, tounge brushes etc nothing is working.
I have inflammation on a small intestine biopsy, but the gastroenterologist doesn’t think it’s coeliac disease as my blood test is normal(I haven’t discussed the breath with them yet as too embarrassed).
so could it be anything else? Is it stomach related? Any tips on how I can improve it?

Sinus infection?

minipie · 17/02/2026 17:31

It can be stomach or sinus related yes

But first are you using interdental brushes?

And are you sure it’s bad not just paranoia- have you asked your dentist??

Are you on Mounjaro? Most people I know who is on it has quite noticeable breath since starting.

That will be the cause. Our sinuses vent/empty directly into our upper palate and from ears to throat so that will be the cause of the bad breath.

a doctor blog post on the how

You need to get the sinus infection cured.

I found that Ultra Dex mouthwash works. Might be worth a try

ForRosePoster · 17/02/2026 17:37

Are you sure you have bad breath?

Or do you just think you do,?

Most people with bad breath don't seem to know but it's something lots of people are concerned about.

LoudSnoringDog · 17/02/2026 17:38

Try CB12 mouthwash

Yes I am flossing, I haven’t spoken to the dentist about it as I am too embarrrassed, I know it sounds so silly. It isn’t paranoia, I can smell it and I’ve had my partner and child ask if I’ve farted whilst talking to them, so must be poo breath which is why I am so horrified by it.

Do you drink enough water ?
if it smells of farts it might be sulphur based. Not sure what that means but it might steer you to a cause ?

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 17/02/2026 17:59

Have you been tested for H Pylori?

do you snore?
do you mouth breathe?

Starburst360 · 17/02/2026 19:50

Could it be a dairy intolerance? My mum has one and man her breath stinks (she still drinks milk in coffee and tea)

MissyB1 · 17/02/2026 19:55

My dh is the same, I’ve come to the conclusion it’s dehydration (he works long hours where he barely drinks). He is also mouth breathing and snoring at night, I’m sure that’s connected somehow. Anyway are you drinking enough water?

HowBizxarre · 17/02/2026 19:58

Do you use a water floss?

Get your blood sugars checked.

Barrellturn · 17/02/2026 21:41

My dh has this while he was losing weight. He was just on a calorie deficit diet but I think he must have been in ketosis because it smelled. I didn't say anything but it's stopped since he stopped losing.

I also knew someone who drank a lot of coffee and had horrible dog poo breath as a result.

LittleRedRidingBoots · 17/02/2026 21:49

Try cutting out dairy. Makes a difference for me!

OSTMusTisNT · 17/02/2026 21:50

Do you visit the dentist/hygienist every 6 months for a deep clean?

Any habits that dry your mouth out - coffee, vaping, tea etc?

Onlyontuesday · 17/02/2026 21:50

Are you constipated? If things are really compacted or there's an obstruction this can cause bad breath. GERD can too.

bloodredfeaturewall · 17/02/2026 22:26

tonsil stones?
