Bad breath that isn't mouth/teeth related?

Mich1986 · 17/02/2026 17:26

i am so embarrassed to be writing this, but it’s becoming a huge issue for me and I don’t know what to do about it.
I have constant bad breath, my teeth are healthy, no cavities or gum disease, I can’t see any tonsils stones, I’ve had an endoscopy and dont have acid reflux. I am brushing 3 times a day and using mouthwash in between, I am having to chew gum constantly. I’ve tried different toothpaste and mouthwash, oral probiotics, tounge brushes etc nothing is working.
I have inflammation on a small intestine biopsy, but the gastroenterologist doesn’t think it’s coeliac disease as my blood test is normal(I haven’t discussed the breath with them yet as too embarrassed).
so could it be anything else? Is it stomach related? Any tips on how I can improve it?

Are you on statins?
A dentist will think nothing if you about your breath and give you an honest answer.

Have you still got your wisdom teeth? An impacted gum will be impossible to clean and stink!

Sherunswithwolves · 18/02/2026 07:39

Have a read about hydrogen SIBO, or SIBO generally.

Do you have a yellow coating on your tongue?

Morepositivemum · 18/02/2026 07:41

Everyone’s going to hate me but what age are you op? Am in my 40s and a lot of us were saying this is a thing now, we were joking about the morning and how quickly we run to brush and how we always have chewing gum now

No, they were removed nearly 20 years ago.

Yes I did wonder about sibo and will ask gastroenterology once I get to see them again, been waiting months! I do have a coating on my tounge that comes off when I brush it.

I am 41, but this has been going on at least 10 years. I feel gross as i look after myself and have good hygiene.

Do you visit the dentist/hygienist every 6 months for a deep clean?

Any habits that dry your mouth out - coffee, vaping, tea etc?

I don’t smoke or vape, 2 cups of tea in the morning then water rest of the day.
whenever I’ve been to the dentist they have said my brushing is really good and gums are healthy so haven’t needed to go to the hygienist.

tonsil stones?

”I can’t see any tonsil stones”

ItsuAtsu · 18/02/2026 09:32

So, not on statins. As there appear to be no dental issues I’d speak to the GP.

endofthelinefinally · 18/02/2026 09:36

See your gp and ask if you should have your kidney function checked.

Tina46 · 19/02/2026 10:27

Even if your brushing is amazing why can't you still see the hygienist for a six monthly scale and clean?

Because there isn’t any calculus build up or plaque to remove and my gums are healthy.

It’s not tonsil stones?

Nope, I’ve checked for them. This feels more like it might be coming from my stomach.

You can’t always see tonsil stones. I have to flush my tonsil crypts with water and loads of tonsil stones come out and they stink. I have a special Syringe. Nothing to be seen just by looking visually. I can tell when I’ve got some stones that need clearing as there’s a bad taste in my mouth and I feel that my breath smells.

I have had them before and yes maybe they are hidden. What are you using to get them out?

@Mich1986 https://amzn.eu/d/0iXT0vpg

takes a bit of practice . I’m thinking about getting a water flosser to do it with but I read it needs to be a low pressure one.

Have you had your mouth x-rayed by the dentist?
