Hi everyone, Happy New Year to you all

My DD is a Psychology student and is currently doing her dissertation on how social media influencers affect how people aged 45–65 think about “healthy living” (things like exercise, diet, wellbeing, etc).

She’s looking for UK-based people in that age group to complete a short anonymous online survey with a few open-ended questions, it takes about 10 minutes and would really help her research. It's just 5 questions.

If you’re happy to take part, I’d be incredibly grateful and so would she!
I’ll put the full study info and survey link below.
Thank you so much in advance!

Hello, my name is Remy, and I am an undergraduate student at the University of Bath.
I am currently conducting a research study to investigate the impact of social media influencers and their impact on 45 to 65 year-olds understandings of ‘healthy living’, involving exercise, diet and more.
I am seeking participants between the ages of 45 and 65 years old currently residing in the UK.

If you choose to participant, you will be asked to complete an online, qualitative survey with 5 open-ended questions about how you use social media, what you are exposed to on it regarding ‘healthy living’ and how you deem influencers to be credible, etc. It should take less than 10 minutes to complete.

Your participation in this study is voluntary, and you will be able to withdraw at any time with no negative consequences up until you select the submit button on the survey, this is because all responses will be automatically anonymised and no identifiable information collected.
This study has received ethical approval from the University of Bath’s ethics committee, with the ethics reference number: 12906-16022
If you are interested in participating or would like more information please click on the link to access the survey: or contact me via email at mailto:[email protected].

Have you paid Mumsnet for this?

Hoppinggreen · 08/01/2026 12:14

Unfortuntately MNHQ don't allow this without payment OP

EmpressaurusKitty · 08/01/2026 12:20

If you do decide to pay for this, OP, I would also suggest that your daughter rethinks the ‘what gender do you identify with’ question. I’m a 52-year-old woman who’s active on social media & a gym regular so I fit her requirements but I have a sex, not a gender, so I’d close the survey at that point.

Maybe she could ask about sex as registered at birth & have an optional question about gender identity?

HighStreetOtter · 08/01/2026 12:28

Well I’ve done it. 👍. I did balk slightly at the gender question but carried on.

HeadyLamarr · 08/01/2026 12:33

I do think asking people in their 60s about influencers is quite funny. None of my friends over 60 know any influencers. My daughter's friends in their 20s do.

I'm 65. I know what an influencer is. It's all the teenagers I know seem to bang on about.

champagnetrial · 08/01/2026 12:36

I answered. I think if you are long-standing MNer, you have paid your dues in content creation (and helping MumsGPT 'crunch the chat'), so a short survey to help one of our student kids is a fair swap!

RaininSummer · 08/01/2026 12:41

I was going to complete it but the gender question would have had me objecting.

Taztoy · 08/01/2026 12:44

I closed the survey at the gender question. I’d suggest she rewords that as a sex question.

millymollyminging · 08/01/2026 13:08

It has been removed now?

MediaSchmedia · 08/01/2026 13:40

Hi - sorry I did hunt around to see if I needed to get this approved/pay for it but didn't see anything. Happy to get it removed.

Apparently the ethics approval required using the word 'gender' for inclusivity reasons, she didn't choose to use it.

Completed. Good luck to your DD.

I know what one is, I just don't follow any of their content. I couldn't imagine buying a vitamin supplement because someone on TikTok told me to. I leave that to the teens.

GoldOpenAccess · 08/01/2026 13:52

There's no way I'm completing a questionnaire that recognises gender woo

I do. Bit odd to think people don't. How many MN-ers tell each other about Yoga with Adrienne or kasandra, or weightlifting with Caroline Girvan? They are influencers who very much appeal to women over 60 interested in fitness.

OP - done it. I don't think you need to pay MN for a student survey. I've done a few before on behalf on MNers children at uni. It's no big deal.

GoldOpenAccess · 08/01/2026 13:53

It's not inclusive though - it's not recognising those who only believe in biology and invalidates the data

HeadyLamarr · 08/01/2026 13:59

Fair enough, happy to be told my friends and I are outliers.

I haven't heard of any of those you mentioned, nor have I read threads recommending them to other Mumsnetters. I'm mostly here for the book, good, gardening and feminism talk.

WearyAuldWumman · 08/01/2026 14:01

I'm just within the demographic. Would be happy to help.

Deadringer · 08/01/2026 14:07

Done.

WearyAuldWumman · 08/01/2026 14:10

Now done.

MediaSchmedia · 08/01/2026 14:20

Thanks so much to those who have completed it. Really HUGELY appreciated. ❤️

I told her to go in and take the word gender out of that question, she can advise the ethics committee why the change was necessary.

I did balk at that... Identify indeed!
