Hi everyone, Happy New Year to you all

My DD is a Psychology student and is currently doing her dissertation on how social media influencers affect how people aged 45–65 think about “healthy living” (things like exercise, diet, wellbeing, etc).

She’s looking for UK-based people in that age group to complete a short anonymous online survey with a few open-ended questions, it takes about 10 minutes and would really help her research. It's just 5 questions.

If you’re happy to take part, I’d be incredibly grateful and so would she!
I’ll put the full study info and survey link below.
Thank you so much in advance!

Hello, my name is Remy, and I am an undergraduate student at the University of Bath.
I am currently conducting a research study to investigate the impact of social media influencers and their impact on 45 to 65 year-olds understandings of ‘healthy living’, involving exercise, diet and more.
I am seeking participants between the ages of 45 and 65 years old currently residing in the UK.

If you choose to participant, you will be asked to complete an online, qualitative survey with 5 open-ended questions about how you use social media, what you are exposed to on it regarding ‘healthy living’ and how you deem influencers to be credible, etc. It should take less than 10 minutes to complete.

Your participation in this study is voluntary, and you will be able to withdraw at any time with no negative consequences up until you select the submit button on the survey, this is because all responses will be automatically anonymised and no identifiable information collected.
This study has received ethical approval from the University of Bath’s ethics committee, with the ethics reference number: 12906-16022
If you are interested in participating or would like more information please click on the link to access the survey: or contact me via email at mailto:[email protected].

Clicked on the link OP but got a message that the survey had been moved or deleted

I think that might have been while she was editing it! But thank you for trying.

Interesting feedback for the ethics committee indeed.

If you do decide to pay for this, OP, I would also suggest that your daughter rethinks the ‘what gender do you identify with’ question. I’m a 52-year-old woman who’s active on social media & a gym regular so I fit her requirements but I have a sex, not a gender, so I’d close the survey at that point.

Maybe she could ask about sex as registered at birth & have an optional question about gender identity?

Same anyone who used the words identify as would not get a reply from me

MarvellousMonsters · 08/01/2026 14:32

It’s not opening for me

It still asks how I identify. I don't identify as anything. I am female. I was happy to start it as you said it had been edited but I still closed it on that question.

If she asks "what is your sex" and has jist two options I'll go back to it.

Elizabethandfour · 08/01/2026 14:40

Sorry won’t answer the identify question. It is also completely meaningless if both men and women can say female or whatever, in that case there is no classification by sex so the question is entirely moot. Students should be pushing back on this.

MediaSchmedia · 08/01/2026 14:45

She has all the responses she needs now. Thanks all.

Just completed it ! So may have missed the boat .
Wishing your daughter all the best with her studies, OP.

Completed. Good luck Remy🌺

I do think asking people in their 60s about influencers is quite funny. None of my friends over 60 know any influencers. My daughter's friends in their 20s do.

I’m in my (very) late 50s and my friends certainly do, lots of us follow online fitness channels etc that we found out about through SM.

I’ve filled it in but grrr to the identifies as question, but I know they don’t get much choice, my DC had to use similar wording to make one of these dissertation surveys.

I know the survey has closed, but find it interesting about the age for knowing influencers, or as I call them social media hawkers! 63 and hate generalisations especially about the virtual world, as it just seeks to reinforce the narrative that over a certain age the virtual world is beyond those of us that actually grew up with it!

Hi - sorry I did hunt around to see if I needed to get this approved/pay for it but didn't see anything. Happy to get it removed.

Apparently the ethics approval required using the word 'gender' for inclusivity reasons, she didn't choose to use it.

Typical 🙄The UK's FE establishments are fully captured. (That would be an interesting dissertion as well, but obviously you would be hounded off the course... )

MediaSchmedia · 08/01/2026 16:56

Thanks so much again all. I agree with you all on the gender/identify wording and she will take it up with her tutor when she gets back. To those who filled it in anyway with gritted teeth thank you, it is much appreciated.
