,,, aren't tummy bugs supposed to only last 48 hours? ...

Dd (5 1/2) and I went off our food on Saturday evening and have felt lousy ever since, really nauseous, some diarrhea but no major vomiting. Dd's had a fever although I haven't. But we're totally washed out. I'd hoped today would be better but we've been in all day and dd's currently asleep on a cushion on the floor.

Has anyone else had a bug that's lasted this long?

i had one a couple of weeks ago, started on Mon afternoon, first morsel of food i ate again was on Friday... hope they feel better soon.

imaginaryfriend · 15/05/2008 17:16

And was that because you were feeling sick Aitch or being sick?

I think it depends on the type of tummy bug. Most bacterial ones pass through your system fairly quickly, but some hang around for ages (like samonella for instance). If you haven't had all that much vomiting or diarrhea, and your dd has a temperature, then perhaps you have a virus. I find with viral tummy bugs that I can feel ill and tired for quite a while, and it takes over a week before food stops tasting like cardboard. Possibly some of the tiredness is to do with not being able to eat very much.

I hope you both feel better soon, I find lots of rest and fluids are the best thing for me.

It just seems to be going on and on. I keep going to bed thinking 'tomorrow we'll feel better' then we wake up and have a worse day than the day before.

i was only sick for the first night and morning, IF, but for the rest of the time i felt like i'd been poisoned. poor dd had it the week before and was out of the game for a good four or five days.

for me, i'd describe it as gastric flu, all those aches and pains combined with nausea. but actually a doc once told me that gastric flu doesn't exist.

awful, anyway, you have my sympathies.

belgo · 15/05/2008 17:25

As a general rule you should see a doctor if it shows no signs of improving after 48 hours.

Dh and I had a tummy bug in south America that lasted a mouth, it only cleared up with strong antibiotics (but that was an exceptional case).

Doodle2U · 15/05/2008 17:25

Oh IF - I've got it too.

Started Sunday tea time and I can't shake it. The really nauseous feeling just won't go away. Had temp. - freezing then boiling but that seems to have gone.

Feel like shit and you have my total sympathies.

twinsetandpearls · 15/05/2008 17:27

I havea horrible bug that was sickness, hot and cold sweats, lethargy, head aches and of all things a sore throat.

Am just feeling better now have felt sick since Saturday but was actually sick from Tuesday.

StealthPolarBear · 15/05/2008 17:29

DS has had D&V since March! Better in the last few days though.
That kept recurring though, rather than the same bug.
Hope you're feeling better tomorrow, if not you will have a weekend to recover (I assume) and should be fully better by Monday!

twinsetandpearls · 15/05/2008 17:30

I have had a real run of tummy bugs this year.

imaginaryfriend · 15/05/2008 17:34

This all sounds familiar to me. How would I know if we needed antibiotics or not? We can't keep not eating forever ...

I have given up going to the doctor as they just tell me it is a virus and to sleep it off.

Well what the hell is it?

T&P, I've had three so far since Jan too. Been taking multi-vitamins and trying to take better care of myself but hey ho, here I am again.

I feel for IF's little one - this is bad enough for an adult, let alone a child

twinsetandpearls · 15/05/2008 17:38

I don't know since jan I think I this is my second sickness bug and I have had throat problems on and off all year.

Dd's eaten the odd thing or two, some toast, lots of ice lollies and generally drinking ok. I took her to the emergency GP last night as she seemed so ill.

I've just been feeling incredibly nauseous and lethargic and today had non-stop diarrhea. I feel worse today than I have since it started.
