Day 6 of flu when will it end?

coco111 · 26/01/2025 16:54

I'm currently on day 6 with the flu. I feel weak, exhausted, have the worst cough, chest pain, a temperature & feel so nausea. When will things improve? I feel like things will never get better it really is so so rough.

I think we just had it. I have a compromised immune system and seemed to get something else on top so now have antibiotics.

Starting to feel a bit better at eight days.

sit in a hot bath to cough up the worst of the gunk. Drink lots. Honey and lemon. Fruit juice. Water.

B12 seemed to help. Maybe it was after a week when I could think about trying to help myself.

coco111 · 26/01/2025 17:31

It really is hellish. I've not felt this unwell in my life. The pain in my chest every time I cough is excruciating.

Haggisccd · 26/01/2025 17:36

Have you had it checked out? Please do get a Dr to listen to your chest in case you need any treatment.

i slept propped up a bit when it was at its worst.

OP I'm sorry to report that I'm on day 11 and still feeling very unwell. Kids bought it home from first week back at school... DH got it first and I was the last to succumb. Fever, upset stomach, aches, sinus pain, barking painful cough.

After a week I went to the GP because of scary chest noises in the night and they gave Doxycycline for bacterial bronchitis - I am pretty sure the initial illness was viral due to the fever and aches, but it was NOT clearing up, and GP was pretty convincing about taking the antibiotics...

I'm on day 4 of the 7 days of antibiotics and my chest sounds much better but I still feel like I've been hit by a bus... Can't possibly take more time off work so will nut up tomorrow (and WFH) but I don't really feel well enough.

It's the poorliest I've been for AGES. Wish you better soon.

Buzyizzy21 · 26/01/2025 17:44

Clearly feeling loads better if you can post! 🙄 Stop with the self pity.

MathsMagpie · 26/01/2025 17:47

It took me 2.5 weeks and even now I'm not 100%.

My son definitely brought it home from school. I think I'll have to call the doctors in the morning. It's so rubbish isn't it. I just wish I could have some energy it's draining.

I had it before Christmas and I was actually "ill" for about a week but then completely wiped out and exhausted for another couple of weeks after that. I'm usually really lucky and never had flu before and usually get over colds quite quickly too

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 26/01/2025 17:56

It's fucking awful and why I get the flu vaccine every year. DH thought I was stupid until he caught actual flu and now books religiously as early as he can.

Lots of employers (mine included) reimburse as its cheaper to give their staff the £20 cost of flu jab than the cost of loss of productivity if it rips through the workforce and half of them are off for 2 weeks. Do luckily get mine NHS though.

Don't be afraid to seek more medical help OP if not getting better x

I am the same. I never normally get that unwell and when I do, I can get over it quickly so this has completely knocked me out. It's like you start to imagine that you're never gonna feel normal again.

Finally starting to feel vaguely human again on day 8. And it’s not like me to be ill

MummytoE · 26/01/2025 19:06

I've had it. It's bad. Was about 5 days before I could venture out of bed even. A couple days off work and able to function somewhat after a week. However 3 weeks on now I'm still getting headaches and so so tried. Hoping for a quick recovery for you

JulietSierra · 26/01/2025 19:10

Op I’m guessing with the chest pain that you need antibiotics. You could have chest infection or pneumonia. I’m speaking from experience here, had terrible chest pain for a few days which was dismissed as muscular. Got a second opinion yesterday. My stats were fine and my chest sounded clear but bloods had really high infection markers and x ray showed pneumonia.
Im feeling loads better on just my second day of antibiotics and my unbearable chest pain is now more just discomfort.
Please get checked tomorrow.

MikeTruk · 26/01/2025 19:22

@coco111 have you done a flu lateral flow test? These are available in Tesco. My partner was so ill last week, I ended up getting the lft as it was so unlike him to be this unwell. He was positive for influenza A. I was so concerned I just wanted an answer as to what it was and would then have that info to give to the doctor if we needed to contact them!

He had about 3 days in bed, full rest seemed to help. Day 8 now and feels much better, up and about but with lingering cough and tiredness. It has really just been soup and rest that have helped (and paracetamol).

we’ve all been ok (touch wood) as we’ve all had the flu vaccine, he hasn’t had it but has now decided he will be getting it every year! It’s brutal!

ThatDaringTurtle · 26/01/2025 22:39

Go back to Doctors. I've just got out of hospital. Been in for 3 days. Pneumonia. I was so ill. High Temp . When they checked my bloods the infection levels were really high. I had a Temp which took a wile to come down. Been ill since 4th Jan

Ohwtfnow · 27/01/2025 06:46

You’ll likely perk up a little bit around day 10 but feel rough for over 2 weeks.

SoftandQuiet · 27/01/2025 06:54

Known loads of people had it bad this winter, hope you’re feeling ‘you’ again soon. So glad I’ve had the jabs.

I've had this. Just starting to feel a bit better day 13 but after the first initial 7 days of illness, I had really awful fatigue for days. I hope I'm now coming out the other side as I need to go back to work tomorrow but I've had days of feeling OK then feeling ill again the next day so I know what you mean about feeling like you aren't going to get better. Like you, I normally fight off viruses fairly quickly. Oh I also had the flu jab as well. I don't think it's covid as I did some tests at the beginning.

Not sure if you are referring to me? I have had the flu jab. Either it didn't work fully or I've got something other than flu. Either way, I'd definitely have the jab again as I was really ill but didn't have the nausea and stomach problems that others had, but had all other symptoms so maybe it gave me some protection. The flu jab doesn't always give 100 per cent protection but I'd definitely get it again next year. Last year I felt this ill was 1998 also flu 🤒

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 27/01/2025 09:08

I had both the flu and Covid jabs in the Autumn but DH and I both feel terrible and think we have chest infections, aching, shivering.
Been off work a week and think it will be another week at least
