ive been on microgynon for nearly 2 years now and my sex drive is at an all time low now! my moods swings are really bad and lose my temper with dc really quick.

ive made an appointment with doctor on friday as its really started to have an effect on my relationship, im just pushing dp away.

Yes. I also tried another type of pill and it had the same effect. THis is one of the reasons why I don't take hormonal contraception.

pinkmook · 28/04/2008 10:45

Me too , had several different types of pill (microgynon, femodene, yasmin, dianette) and they all did the exact same thing - doctor looked at me like I was of low IQ when I linked the two and even family planning nurses denied a link but having been off the pill since Oct last year I can confirm it definitley bloody was!

belgo · 28/04/2008 10:48

It's obvious though. Many women feel at their most sexy when they ovulate, and the pill stops ovulation. You don't need a high IQ to work that one out.

clayre · 28/04/2008 10:48

it made me lose the plot, i have gave up on hormonal contracption too, hoping dp will get the snip soon, he's too young apperently

appledumpling · 28/04/2008 10:54

Yes, I went on Microgynon 30 and immediately lost my sex drive, came off it some time later to get pregnant and sex drive mysteriously reappeared.

i think im going to try a different pill and see i get on, but this one has completely changed my personality!!

dp thinks i just dont want sex with him! but i told him this morning i think its the pill so maybe we'll just have to use condoms for a while and see if i get my sex drive back once my hormones have all settled.

Find out about possible side effects of the coil before you get it if you consider it.

ClairePO · 28/04/2008 10:56

I had exactly this problem, and it took a while to recover it tbh.

SandyDennyWasAGreatSinger · 28/04/2008 11:07

i felt pre-menstrual all month long when i was on Microgynon. I don't remember having much interest in sex either, but then i was in an awful mood all the time so i don't expect dp was interested anyway...

minster · 28/04/2008 11:54

Yes, it's terrible. I won't use hormonal contraception, you won't get it back straight away either.

chuggabopps · 28/04/2008 12:56

In the interests of a balanced view then nope- have been on it for the majority of the last ten years. suits me fine.
sorry to hear its not for you, but we aren't all the same.

Fllight · 28/04/2008 13:00

I took it for about 2 months and it made me even worse tempered and depressed than usual

awful stuff

I would rather use natural family planning and end up with a big natural family than use that stuff again.

I don't remember losing my sex drive but I wasn't on it for long enough and was too busy anyway to think about that

boyfriend at the time was a loser so maybe I lost my drive and put it down to that

Habbibu · 28/04/2008 13:02

Hated microgynon - felt miserable and dull all the time - took me a while to put 2 and 2 together, but when I came off it there was a huge difference.

VanillaPumpkin · 28/04/2008 13:06

Microgynon 30 was ok for me but I did suffer from oestrogen withdrawal headaches during my pill free week (I was advised to run packs together no problem).
I am contemplating the implant and so I have been put on Cerazette (progesterone only) to trial it. I am only 2 weeks in but have been tearful, angry, calm, extra patient and have an increased sex drive all changing day by day in just two weeks . I am hoping it will settle as I don't want the coil but don't want to have to keep remembering to take my pill and dh is too young for a vasectomy yet.
Condoms are the one thing that reduces my sex drive. It seems that Cerazette has definately boosted it though so that may be an option for you to try.

bigTillyMint · 28/04/2008 13:06

What kind if coil do you recommend, cod?

eandh · 28/04/2008 13:07

Interesting I went on this and am still on it after having dd2 and my sex drive has dissapeared, I put it down to 2 dd's and crap night sleep and being overweight and feeling fat, but my moods are awful and I can be a real moody bitch, dh won't have the snip may have to look at other types of contraception as I def do not want any more dc!

izzybobsmum · 28/04/2008 13:16

After years on Microgynon I started having headaches every month on my 7 days off. My doctor advised me to come off it, and my husband and I are now using condoms. About two weeks after stopping the Microgynon, I couldn't believe the amount my sex drive had returned - I am now champing at the bit so to speak. I hadn't actually realised my sex drive had got so low - just put it down to having a baby etc - so am pleasantly surprised at its return - needless to say, so is dh!!

LilRedWG · 28/04/2008 13:21

I had a non-hormone coil fitted two weeks ago as I also wanted to get off Microgynon.

I think the old sex drive is already starting to pick up.

NatalieJane · 28/04/2008 13:22

Yep, loss of sex drive, bad mood swings, huge weight gain, it was only when I came off it to TTC DS2, after having been on it for 4 years, that I realised just how bad I had been on it.

ROSEgarden · 28/04/2008 13:25

i was moved onto this after ovranatte was discontinued and TBH i didnt realsie till now that i feel more or less the same, plus for the last year or so, i 'cant' get out of bed in the morning..nothings changed, dd sleeps better and i couldnt put my finger on it?, im on no other medication, nothing else different...wonder if this could be down to this too??..dp changes subject when i mention the snip!??

LilRedWG · 28/04/2008 13:27

When I was looking into the coil (metaphorically of course) Lulu34 gave me this link, which has tons of information.

Dalrymps · 28/04/2008 13:28

I was the same, made me really moody and down too, tried a few different types, celest, mimi pill, depo injection but found they all had some effect on my mood. Whenever I say that to docs though they just look at me like i'm stupid. I even got a lecture from the consultant at my 6 week check about how condoms were really unreliable and I should get something else sorted out if I don't want to get pregnant again in the near future , think thats up to me thanks! I won't use hormonal contraception now.

themoon66 · 28/04/2008 13:29

Microgynon made me so depressed i was suicidal. I put on 3 stone as well. This was a good number of years ago now, but when I stopped taking it, I was right as rain within 3 months. Took me a couple of years to lose the weight though.

LilRedWG · 28/04/2008 13:34

themoon - interesting you should say that, because the main reason I am came off it is that I am sure it has been making my depression much much worse, (I'm on 60mg Prozac). I did tell the doctor this and, to be fair, she did say it would be worth trying without the pill to see what my natural homones do, but she did stop short of agreeing that it is possible the cause.

I'm glad that you got so much better in three months - here's hoping it does the same for me.

(Sorry for the hijack)
