Anyone have any tips to relieve pain from dry socket? I had my wisdom tooth out on monday (4 days ago) and I have dry socket 😭😭😭 so painful. I went to dentist yesterday and got it packed and given antibiotics as it’s infected but the packing just hasn’t helped at all. It’s now the weekend so can’t go back to dentist just looking for some tips to help me manage the pain over the weekend 🙏🏼 🙏🏼🙏🏼

I had one while living in USA. The dentist packed it every couple of days and that helped. I took ibuprofen and co-codamol too just to sleep.

It's bone pain because the bone is exposed. Worst pain ever.

I bought some clove oil while desperate but couldn't get it in the hole and it tasted so disgusting when I got it on my tongue I nearly puked.

Try an emergency dentist don't tough it out all weekend. If the packing is done right it really helps.

The bone is exposed?!? 😳😳😳

My dentist told me antibiotics take around three days to kick in so hopefully you’re doing all you can at the moment. I think it just needs time.

They don’t give antibiotics for a dry socket.

@Youvebeenframed @MujeresLibres @angryanderson88 thank you for suggesting orajel I quickly drove to Tesco last night before it shut to grab some. Could only get the 10% one but helped a little.

I slept propped up on the sofa last night which seemed to help a bit. Was in agony last night and again this morning but it comes and goes in waves. I think thats the infection. Just praying it’s over soon it feels like it’s been an eternity 😩😩😩

get ambesol

something like that

best thing I’ve ever used for dry socket over the cojnter

ither than that nothing else even touched it a tiny bit.

im so sorry OP

I ordered some alvocure off Amazon which came today. It’s basically a similar paste dentists use to pack the socket. I put some in the socket about an hour ago and for the first time in days I have no pain 🙌🏼 it’s probably not recommended to do yourself but at this point I’ll take anything 😂

Really glad you had some relief. Just a caution from me - I had a gaping hole while I waited on extraction at hospital (1.5 years!) as my wisdom tooth was a mess and half drilled out. After about the third time my temporary filling fell out I got some DIY filling paste from Amazon too rather than go back to dentist yet again and ended up with an infection under it. I think you said you are already on antibiotics though so should be ok.

I also tried Anbesol but find it so much harder to apply than Oragel. Ended up biting down on the end of a soaked cotton bud and it is very numbing too.

Thanks for warning I might go back to dentist tomorrow if it hasn’t improved anyway!

@xyz111 how long after your extraction did you stop feeling pain? It’s been 6 days for me now which doesn’t sound very long but feels like it…

Get back to dentist you may need stronger/different antibiotics.
By day 4 the worst was over I was on Antibiotics for 10 days all in all for it.
Hugs OP hope they can get you sorted tomorrow fingers crossed 🤞

My dry socket pain kicked in a few days after the extraction - I finally felt at a manageable pain level - on day 11 post extraction.

angryanderson88 · 10/11/2024 13:06

I was never on antibiotics at all - a lot of people on this thread getting confused between post extraction infection and dry socket. You can be unlucky and have both of course. And some dentists will give antibiotics just in case. Mine didn't despite a very difficult long extraction and several stitches. To be fair they were right - I never had an infection. Dry socket is due to the clot that covers the extraction site being lost or damaged and exposing the bone below.

Err. About 3 weeks for the whole thing. Not excruciating pain. That was for about 7 days but I had almost daily packing done of mine

They rarely give antibiotics for a dry socket.

i mean I never got any. I asked about some and he said it’s not an infection which it isn’t.

it’s literally a dry socket and no clotting or something

Yeah. I’ve said that.

though the op has an infection on top of a dry socket. But that won’t be causing the massive pain. It is literally the dry socket that will be the pain

mitogoshigg · 10/11/2024 16:35

Emergency dental appointment is the only way. It is the most painful thing I've ever experienced, and I've given birth without pain relief!

To the person who is about to have their tooth removed, it doesn't always happen but do follow the aftercare instructions and top tip, avoid rice initially, I got rice stuck in the hole when I got dry socket. I've had another out since without issue!
