Anyone have any tips to relieve pain from dry socket? I had my wisdom tooth out on monday (4 days ago) and I have dry socket 😭😭😭 so painful. I went to dentist yesterday and got it packed and given antibiotics as it’s infected but the packing just hasn’t helped at all. It’s now the weekend so can’t go back to dentist just looking for some tips to help me manage the pain over the weekend 🙏🏼 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Oh god. I need to have one removed. This isn't helping. Sorry you're in pain op. Find someone with some codine?

Diversion · 08/11/2024 21:32

Dry socket is incredibly painful, but I am surprised that the packing and antibiotics have not helped. Can you find your nearest emergency dentist and see them tomorrow?

itsmeits · 08/11/2024 21:33

Clove oil and strongest pain killers you can get you hands on - save them for bedtime to help knock you out. Keep on top of pain meds to try to keep the edge off.
Salt water rinse don't spit let it drip out. Don't spit.
Try not to smoke or vape as much if you do - if you do salt rinse after.
You have my sympathy OP it's horrible I suffered last year with one. I hope the infection clears soon 💐

Iheartmysmart · 08/11/2024 21:34

Oh yuck. Poor you OP, I had that over Christmas a few years ago after a tooth extraction. The antibiotics kicked in after a couple of days which really helped with the pain. Until then, I alternated with co-codamol and ibuprofen which didn’t completely numb the pain but kept the worst of it at bay. Don’t use clove oil, it’s really bad for you but a little bit of Anbesol dabbed on carefully so you don’t disturb the packing might also help.

@Diversion yeh me too as I had dry socket a few years ago with my other wisdom tooth and when I got it packed last time it relieved the pain straight away… this time I wondered if it’s just because it’s infected? I don’t know 🤷🏼‍♀️

Oh God, I shuddered when I saw your post. My husband was
in such a state with dry socket - watching someone in so much pain is horrific. He was literally demented with it rolling on the floor.
Solpadeine Max helped take the edge off, there’s a numbing gel you can buy from Boots think it’s called Oragel or something like that 🤔
Try not to mess with it, rinse with salt water- don’t spit out or disturb any clotting
Feel better soon - this too shall pass 💐

angryanderson88 · 08/11/2024 21:41

I really feel for you - it's utterly horrendous. When I realised I had it I also went back to get it packed and had involuntary tears of pain running down my face (I am not scared of the dentist and never cry so was mortified) I counted down the minutes to take max doses of alternate painkillers of strongest I could get prescribed which barely took the edge off. Cold packs helped a little. The only thing I can say is it will pass in a few days - but it's awful and I don't think anyone who hasn't experienced it realises it's up there with childbirth on the pain scale.

stargazer02 · 08/11/2024 21:43

@NoCarbsForMe it's not inevitable. I had a wisdom tooth out on Tuesday - my 3rd wisdom out- and (touch wood) it's been almost imperceptible. Very very vague discomfort. I keep forgetting not to eat on that side.

@Peachki do not apply heat - it's sometimes recommended but I've been told it makes infection spread. Can't add any more than whatx already been said. I'm sure you are exhausted wit it all.

MujeresLibres · 08/11/2024 21:45

Sympathies, I've had a root canal infection this week. It took about 2 days for the antibiotics to really kick in. I found ibuprofen the best painkiller and alternated that with cocodamol. I didn't find codeine on its own was that great. Orajel 20% will really numb the area for a while, I used that to fill the gap between painkillers, and Bonjela. Hope you feel better soon.

angryanderson88 · 08/11/2024 21:48

Oragel is OTC from most pharmacies - make sure to get the extra strength 20% one - it's a pretty strong anaesthetic gel. Cant put it in the packed socket but gives some relief around the rest of gum. I also used solpadeine max then got a v short course of prescription strength cocodamol from my GP which was better. You have to be careful with the paracetamol as it's so painful there is a temptation to take too many so prescription was better. Alternative with Nurofen plus if needed until worst is over. The infection is a separate issue though. Dry socket doesn't need antibiotics. Hope it improves soon for you.

Peachki · 08/11/2024 21:49

Thank you everyone for all the advice. It really is the most horrendous pain. I’ve tried all sorts of pain relief nothing fully relieves it but I keep taking it anyway.

@stargazer02 oh really I didn’t know about heat spreading infection. I’ve had hot water bottle on it for last 2 days 😫

I had dry socket and it's worse than childbirth, so you have my full sympathy. I did find the antibiotics took the edge off after a few days. I'd go back to the dentist on Monday if the pain is no better by then.

Scutterbug · 08/11/2024 22:06

You poor thing. Can you see an emergency dentist in the morning? NHS 111 can help.
Sympathies though. I have a raging tooth infection. My face is swollen on one side from my chin right up into my eye. I’ve been told if it doesn’t go down by tomorrow (I have amoxicillin) then I’m to go to A and E for IV antibiotics. Praying it eases over night.

Cerealkiller4U · 08/11/2024 22:07

I had a dry socket and it’s one of the worst pains I’ve ever been theough

i I had it packed daily at the dentist with this weird amber coloured netting.

brilliant stuff

Cerealkiller4U · 08/11/2024 22:09

Pretty certain most on the thread have never had a dry socket. Codiene or over the counter won’t help at all.

honestly worst pain beyond a blood clot I’ve ever ever had.

it’s as bit of a waiting game. It’s not like an infection. It’s thousands times worse than just an infected tooth or abscess.

packing every day. I’d ask the dentist what to do

Yeah. It’s 10000000 times worse than any infected tooth. I was literally screaming in pain and rolling on the floor. Didn’t sleep for 3 days. Horrific horrific pain.

GatherlyGal · 08/11/2024 22:15

I had one while living in USA. The dentist packed it every couple of days and that helped. I took ibuprofen and co-codamol too just to sleep.

It's bone pain because the bone is exposed. Worst pain ever.

I bought some clove oil while desperate but couldn't get it in the hole and it tasted so disgusting when I got it on my tongue I nearly puked.

Try an emergency dentist don't tough it out all weekend. If the packing is done right it really helps.

Getamoveon2024 · 08/11/2024 22:22

Go back to the dentist, it doesn’t matter it’s the weekend, emergency dentists are open. Dry socket is the most hideous thing I’ve ever had. No painkiller came anywhere near it. Mine was fixed after a repeat visit to the dentist. If it hadn’t been, I’d have had to go back, it was beyond horrendous. Call the dentist!

LaLaLaurie · 08/11/2024 22:23

When I had a dry socket the only relief was my dentist packing it.

LaLaLaurie · 08/11/2024 22:24

My dentist told me antibiotics take around three days to kick in so hopefully you’re doing all you can at the moment. I think it just needs time.

okydokethen · 09/11/2024 09:07

It's an horrendous pain.
Call emergency dentist. Packing should have helped maybe it's dislodged.
Careful with painkillers I almost overdosed (and I'm not one for taking medication)

Peachki · 09/11/2024 09:50

@Youvebeenframed @MujeresLibres @angryanderson88 thank you for suggesting orajel I quickly drove to Tesco last night before it shut to grab some. Could only get the 10% one but helped a little.

I slept propped up on the sofa last night which seemed to help a bit. Was in agony last night and again this morning but it comes and goes in waves. I think thats the infection. Just praying it’s over soon it feels like it’s been an eternity 😩😩😩

okydokethen · 09/11/2024 10:53

Youvebeenframed · 09/11/2024 11:55

It’s probably not infected, just the dry socket that is so so fucking painful
Hope you’re over he worst of it by the end of the day
Glad the oragel helped a bit. You might get a stronger one or something similar if you ask to speak to the pharmacist?

Peachki · 09/11/2024 14:36

I ordered some alvocure off Amazon which came today. It’s basically a similar paste dentists use to pack the socket. I put some in the socket about an hour ago and for the first time in days I have no pain 🙌🏼 it’s probably not recommended to do yourself but at this point I’ll take anything 😂
