Diarrhea for the 11th day running-second bout within a month

user1478639495 · 28/09/2024 09:20

End of August I had random diarrhea come on and lasted a week, I assumed tummy bug. Fast forward 3 weeks and it's come back again I'm assuming tummy bug but I don't think it is, no one else in the house has caught it, seems to be my body the more I'm trying to work out what's going on.

I'll be calling the docs on Monday (if I can actually speak to one will be a miracle) my question is has anyone else had this and what have they done what has been the causes? Any thoughts on what I can do? I was up again in the night from 3am until 5am on the toilet and it's getting so miserable. I've got some probiotics coming today but just actimel I'm going to try some more expensive stuff next week when I can get it ordered up, I've been living on peppermint tea and toast, I'll be honest I've gotten so bloody hungry at times I've caned and had plain chocolate (only twice) and a regular meal in the evening hit I've made sure it's mainly been chicken and boiled potatoes with some veg.

Tia x

That is a long time. I hope your GP does take it seriously Flowers

Hoglet70 · 28/09/2024 09:30

I've had IBS for many, many years and I have bouts like this when it goes on for days and gets me up in the night for no rhyme or reason. Definitely get yourself checked out as I always think anything that isn't your particular normal deserves looking at but hopefully it is just a random thing. Any chance you are stressed or worrying about something as any stress or worry goes straight to my bowels.

Juliefaith · 28/09/2024 22:06

Hi, have you try calling 111, speak to a nurse or doctor? If you can't get out to the pharmacist(supermarket)sometimes open, get someone to buy some Imodium or something similar. Ask the pharmacist. Not sure how many days or times you went to the toilet. Do you think you have caught a virus or ate something upset your stomach? Husband & I must have caught something, both of us had soft stools, but only in the mornings. Anyway, we had a nasty cough, maybe Covid. You can take Probiotics from food or supplements like Optibac. Nowadays, I eat food like Greek yogurt, Sauerkraut, sourdough bread, Kefir or natural yoghurt. Don't go for sweeten yogurt. Do you like rice, banana? Sometimes people with diarrhoea eat bland food. Take care, x

Juliefaith · 28/09/2024 22:08

Once your health improve, you can start to eat more food.

JC03745 · 28/09/2024 22:18

Have you travelled abroad in the past few months?
Are you avoiding eating- for fear of diarrhoea or does eating make it worse?

I had a similar, random episode years ago. No pain, blood, vomiting, fever etc and no one else had it.
I ate non fatty/non spicy food, drank kefir, plain yoghurts and things like yakult and cut any other dairy. I also used dioralyte, rehydration sachets to help replace the electrolytes I was losing.
Whatever it was cleared and has never returned.
You are doing the right thing to see the GP, especially as it has returned. I would be asking for a stool sample as a minimum. Ensure you keep your fluids up too. I hope it clears soon.

DeliciousApples · 28/09/2024 22:56

I had that. Turned out manufacturers have sneaked artificial sweeteners into regular drinks (not just diet ones) and snacks without announcing it.

I'm sensitive to them.

So I was "shitting through the eye if a needle" for days without knowing why.

Took Imodium for one day and problem solved. Started reading all labels.

AgainandagainandagainSS · 28/09/2024 22:58

This happened to me when I had campylobacter. Dreadful for 2 weeks (hospitalized for 2 days) and then it restarted on and off for up to 8 months, especially when I ate something rich. Basically it purged my gut.

Kilroywashere · 28/09/2024 23:07

There are many bugs that can cause these symptoms. I reckon as mentioned above you need the GP to take a stool sample to check for common causes.

StarDolphins · 28/09/2024 23:13

This just happened to me. I had been abroad (Majorca) but didn’t have a sickness bug. Had diarrhoea the day I got back & it went on for 8 weeks - at worst diarrhoea, at best soft. Along with the worst cramps/gurgling.

Dr thinks a disruption in my gut biome/good bacteria. Recommend a certain probiotic & fingers crossed it’s working, it’s been a week & I’m feeling very positive & very relieved.

user1478639495 · 29/09/2024 09:48

Thank you all for your replies sorry that you've all had similar episodes! It's so bloody hard trying to get out and about and work school runs etc trying to time it between a bloody bowl movement when they are coming in (or rather out!) thick and fast 🤦🏻‍♀️

I haven't been abroad recently, have got stress going on but then I always have I wouldn't say it's anything out of the ordinary stress. I feel I'm handling it quite well but perhaps I'm not? My sister mentioned it's all stress and my tummy is in knots trying to tell me to rest etc but I don't have time to rest, I've got 3 kids and life as we all do so my best is to try and stay chilled but as I say I think I'm doing ok in that area so I don't think it's all
Stress.

I think your all right the way forward is bland food no sugars no dairy etc. the actumel arrived yesterday so I'm having one a day but currently looking at a product called biomel, says it
Dairy and gluten free so that's got to be good right?

I'll call the dr tomorrow see what they say, it's a tricky one I guess stool sample will be the obvious thing to do but then after that I'd imagine it'll be a case of do what you've all suggested and wait for out.

Good shout on the dioralyte, I am starting to feel really tired and I guess now it's taking its toll so I'll grab some of that later to help.

Good to hear you've all combated it one way or another, my main issue is navigating life around toilet runs! It's so embarrassing, I caught short at softplay the other day, I thought I was safe stood up to leave and thought I need to go now, a lady nipped in the loo before me god i was sweating hoping she was quick, I whizzed in there and let rip 🤦🏻‍♀️🙈🤣 it was awful 😢 obviously didn't leave a mess of anything but someone was waiting outside when I got out 🤦🏻‍♀️ I just wanted to run and hide 🫣 it's horrible 😩 I'm panicking when I'm out and about where the nearest toilet is which won't be helping matters.

What is campylobacter? I've never heard of it?

It's weird sometimes eating makes it better sometimes it makes it worse. I
Stopped eating last week for a good few hours then I had to eat something so I could take my steroids and it improved it was t so watery but then other time I eat and I'm rushing to the toilet straight away within 15 mins

Sillium husk can sometimes help things to be a little more formed.

EmeraldDreams73 · 29/09/2024 12:27

Definitely try good quality probiotics (Optibac are one good make) plus Enterosgel - it's amazing. I take both every day as I have a stomach condition but my kids have the gel when they have an upset stomach and it works wonders. Obviously while you're waiting for doctor to check you over in the meantime. Hope you're better soon.

A horrible type of food poisoning that you get from poultry. I honestly thought I was dying. I went from a healthy and active 19 year old to not being able to dry my own hair.

Neenaaneenaa · 29/09/2024 12:47

Omg yes me! I've had four or five episodes in the past couple of months. Thought it was bad food but it keeps happening! Going to the doctors soon to see if they can help because it's really getting me down!

bowelpain · 30/09/2024 04:30

These are the probiotics my gastro reccomends. Thejy dpont need to go in the fridge and helped me a lot. Alflorex Dual Action - Daily Gut... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09ZDW4Q8F?ref=ppxpoppmobappshare

LadyBugOut · 30/09/2024 05:13

Your tap water is possibly contaminated.

Are other people in your household or neighbourhood suffering? Have you asked in your local Facebook group if others have similar symptoms?

I started having these episodes a few years ago, it turns out I had suddenly become lactose intolerant. Apparently its one of those things that can just happen with ageing. You could try cutting dairy out for a few weeks and see how you go.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 30/09/2024 06:41

I’d definitely get to the doctors. Get them to do a stool test to rule out anything, then go backwards from there. Could be IBS or food intolerances.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 30/09/2024 06:48

@AgainandagainandagainSS I had Campylobacter food poisoning earlier on this year. 12 days of utter hell. Luckily I swerved hospital but only just…

Seems I’d depleted my system so badly that 6 weeks later all my hair fell out.

@user1478639495 - get yourself sorted as you’ll be losing lots of vitamins and minerals over this length of time. Look after yourself.

lemonyellows · 30/09/2024 06:49

First off speak to GP to get a stool sample done. You won't know until results from that.

gerispringer · 30/09/2024 06:57

Could be inflammation of the colon , this can be detected with a stool sample and maybe a colonoscopy. Look into low fodmap diet, which is recommended for IBS and IBDs as a short term measure to identify triggers. I take Symprove probiotic, which my gastro doc told me is the only one clinically proven to work. It s a long haul but I don’t have the symptoms anymore.

ughhh it's really horrible isn't it. Never felt so ill in my life.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 30/09/2024 08:45

@AgainandagainandagainSS all I could stomach was diluted apple juice. I knew I was ill when 111 sent a doctor out. I’ve only just started eating chicken…
