Diarrhoea for 5 days making me miserable

So I had diarrhoea a little while ago, Wednesday it was I believe a few times that day. Stomach pain, couldn’t have anything tight on my waist, nausea. Still felt a bit iffy the next day but not too bad. Came down with a uti the next day, on antibiotics from Friday - Sunday. Got thrush, treated that on Sunday night with internal pessary.

Sunday felt a bit off. I thought it was because I found a caterpillar in my food. I don’t know if I ate one accidentally or not. Assume it came from my broccoli. Apparently if it was one of the bugs off of a broccoli it’s not harmful, but I felt icky anyway and have been worrying about it. Monday diarrhoea started. I am also nauseous, no appetite, left sided flank pain, upper abdominal pain, pelvic pain.

The diarrhoea is bright yellow water. Sometimes there is mucous. Usually the diarrhoea is in the morning and then nothing / just mucous for the rest of the day.

I am able to pass gas without following through which I think is positive and then the diarrhoea starts again.

Google tells me it shouldn’t last this long and to contact a GP, which I will do on Monday.

I don’t feel systematically unwell, I have energy, doing usual activities, temperature about 37.1-37.3. But I am feeling a bit stressed about what this is and when I’ll be feeling better.

has anyone had similar and can give me hope on when recovery could be expected? Every day i wake up hoping and the same symptoms are there. I’ve never had symptoms like this before, particularly the left sided pain

Ooh, or yersinia, I that causes appendicitis like pain. Its rare, not on the usual range for bacterial testing unless the lab uses GI PCR which isnt widespread in the UK.

Appendicitis like pain triggers extra testing in our lab, I work in a microbiology you see!

@TheLovleyChebbyMcGee they haven’t done a formal parasitic check but they observed the sample and state nothing of that nature was observed. But I did read some of them aren’t shed in every stool

@TheLovleyChebbyMcGee ooo that’s exciting! Sorry only just seen your second message hence you’ve got me twice.

I don’t have appendicitis like pain so doubt it’s that. I’m suspicious of giardia due to symptoms (the alternating yellow liquid diarrhoea in the morning then trapped wind in the afternoon and evening). Right now I’m lying in the bath listening to my belly and feeling the bloating all down the left side but the gas just. Won’t. Come. Out.

why the fuck is the diarrhoea stopping after lunch and I get this instead?! I feel like I’m never going to get better.

@TheLovleyChebbyMcGee ive just looked at my lab results and they looked for cryptosporidium and it was negative.

Its not bloody is it? There's a whole load of different e.coli strains, so most labs only detect the o157 strain, that's the big bad one the news is always reporting on, but there's loads more that we can't detect even with the extended testing we do. We send any bloody samples off to a reference lab that specialise in that type of diarrhoea.

So not saying its linked to your UTI though, there's a huge amount of different strains of e.coli, most don't cause diarrhoea, but some do. Its not really serious so please don't be too worried!

whatiswrongwithmygut · 04/09/2024 19:10

@TheLovleyChebbyMcGee no, no blood. You’re right they only tested for o157.

uti is improving already from one antibiotic (nitro).

my symptoms at the moment are:

type 5 stool within 15 minutes of waking. This is more brown the last couple of days than I have experienced since onset.

then I may have diarrhoea again before eating but usually not. After breakfast (doesn’t matter what it is, biscuits / porridge / toast / eggs), I’ll have diarrhoea within an hour. This is more type 6 and yellow.

I will usually have diarrhoea again at some point, usually this is yellow water, if any solid pieces it floats and an oil film on the water (hence the pancreatic freak out).

usually no more diarrhoea despite eating BUT increase in abdominal gas throughout the afternoon, evening and overnight that I really struggle to pass. Like straining to pass it and even then I fail more often than not. Then the cycle all starts again the next day. 10 days of it now. The left sides stitch like discomfort is ever present.

Hope you got some answers ?
a really good probiotic might help with calming the symptoms…

whatiswrongwithmygut · 21/09/2024 08:36

@Sunnysideup999 still not 100% but all tests negative. Thinking post infective IBS at this stage. Left sided pain has never gone.

Hi there, sorry to hear you are still sick. My test results also came back negative but then developed pain in back and left side .......and don't get me started on the wind.

I am now being sent for x-rays, hopefully answers will be given soon.
