Diarrhoea for 5 days making me miserable

whatiswrongwithmygut · 31/08/2024 12:07

So I had diarrhoea a little while ago, Wednesday it was I believe a few times that day. Stomach pain, couldn’t have anything tight on my waist, nausea. Still felt a bit iffy the next day but not too bad. Came down with a uti the next day, on antibiotics from Friday - Sunday. Got thrush, treated that on Sunday night with internal pessary.

Sunday felt a bit off. I thought it was because I found a caterpillar in my food. I don’t know if I ate one accidentally or not. Assume it came from my broccoli. Apparently if it was one of the bugs off of a broccoli it’s not harmful, but I felt icky anyway and have been worrying about it. Monday diarrhoea started. I am also nauseous, no appetite, left sided flank pain, upper abdominal pain, pelvic pain.

The diarrhoea is bright yellow water. Sometimes there is mucous. Usually the diarrhoea is in the morning and then nothing / just mucous for the rest of the day.

I am able to pass gas without following through which I think is positive and then the diarrhoea starts again.

Google tells me it shouldn’t last this long and to contact a GP, which I will do on Monday.

I don’t feel systematically unwell, I have energy, doing usual activities, temperature about 37.1-37.3. But I am feeling a bit stressed about what this is and when I’ll be feeling better.

has anyone had similar and can give me hope on when recovery could be expected? Every day i wake up hoping and the same symptoms are there. I’ve never had symptoms like this before, particularly the left sided pain

I’ve had covid loads of times and never had gastro symptoms so I don’t think it’s that. Sore throat hasn’t progressed over night so I wonder if it was reflux.

@caringcarer shouldn’t take Imodium if it’s bacterial as it extends the illness

@LuluBlakey1 strangely my appetite is back the last few days and I am sick to death of bread, egg, rice and pasta (although still eating it as scared to introduce anything else). My body is much happier in the mornings when it’s empty. I feel normal! And then I eat and the diarrhoea starts again and all the left sided pain is back :(

The mucus is caused by your bowel being irritated by food passing through it so quickly and 'damaging/removing' the protective lining of cells. The body does not have time to grow another one so protects the bowel lining with mucus.
Try not eating for 24 hours- just plain water with a small amount of salt and a teaspoon of sugar added. Then move onto white bread and scrambled egg for 24 hours- lowfibre.

How have I had IBS / GF issues for 20yrs and not known that's why the mucus happens 😳.

OnlyFrench · 01/09/2024 14:15

I've had the middle of the night sore throat for three or four nights and the diarrhoea kicked in yesterday evening. I feel wiped out 😢

justasking111 · 01/09/2024 14:19

I'm on antibiotics after a dental procedure. The white throne is my friend. Scared to even nip to the shop around the corner 🙈

Unless you allow your bowel lining to heal, your body will continue to produce mucus and hurry food through your intestine to get it past your bowel. You need to give your bowel a chance to rest.

whatiswrongwithmygut · 01/09/2024 15:06

@LuluBlakey1 i spoke to a private GP who suggested eating little and often to encourage whatever it is out of my body and stop the inflammatory response. Plus I am hungry. My stomach is rumbling and asking for food.

@whatiswrongwithmygut , sorry to take so long to get back to you, anyways, been having some IBS type symptoms on and off for a while, but then last Sunday while I was away, everything blew up!
Managed to get an appointment with Dr on Wednesday but couldn't do bloods etc til Friday so may be a while for the results.
It all seems to have quietened down now but anxiety over it starting again, ot it's something more serious is putting me off my bloody food.

whatiswrongwithmygut · 01/09/2024 19:19

@Aussiegold im no better still and it’s making me really anxious. Calling the doctor first thing tomorrow as symptoms are unusual.

How have I had IBS / GF issues for 20yrs and not known that's why the mucus happens 😳.

I had acute pancreatitis caused by a gallstone in the tube to my pancreas. It was the most awful ghing- incredibly painful. Was in hospital about 8 days and it messed up my whole digestive sytrm for two months. One of the side effects when I came out of hospital was loose bowel movements and lots of mucus. The consultant explained what caused it.

whatiswrongwithmygut · 02/09/2024 11:40

Well all obs were fine. Awaiting stool sample results now.

She wasn’t concerned at all, said sometimes it can take a bit longer to clear even in healthy individuals and to eat and drink little and often. Very difficult to do with no real appetite.

There are many versions of covid and the gastro version is very common at the minute. I know someone who's still recovering from it.

whatiswrongwithmygut · 02/09/2024 12:36

@TruthThatsHardAsSteel my daughter has started to come down with something respiratory so maybe. I did do two tests yesterday but both void, my tests are out of date but I won’t be buying any new ones.

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 02/09/2024 13:28

My mum lost two stone in a month of suffering from it. She ended up in A & E a week or two after a culmination of an absolute nightmare.

Regardless, I hope you're recover quickly ❤️.. Just didn't want you to write covid off so easily.

This is so interesting-are you on the ie line of work? No idea how I've not found this out before as a lifelong sufferer of IBS

OP ibis's a similar illness to you a couple of years back. Tested negative for covid. Started off very quickly as sickness and a high temperature. But the diarroeah; gosh it lasted about 6 weeks and was bright, bright yellow. I'd had fish tacos in a restaurant the day before (post lockdown) and so did my DSd-she was fine, I was SO ill. I'll never know whether it was the meal or not. I had stool tests and nothing positive came up.
My bum was so sore at one point I had to lie sideways on the sofa with a lose skirt and no knickers as I simply couldn't sit down. You have my sincere empathy and sympathy.

@abracadabra1980 omg 6 weeks?! I’m on 9 days and I’m done in. Almost hoping for a call saying I’ve got salmonella or something at this point so I know what it is.

OP posts:
abracadabra1980 · 03/09/2024 16:35

I was the same; it actually had me in tears in the end-pathetic I know, but I was so, so, sore. Usually I'm stoic; quick Immodium and carry on with my day. Hope you're feeling better soon.

whatiswrongwithmygut · 03/09/2024 16:43

I’m more scared about the left sided pain. Worried my spleen is enlarged.

Stop googling

whatiswrongwithmygut · 03/09/2024 20:33

@gamerchick youre completely right about that. Just running out of explanations for my symptoms and worried something serious has been missed.

Well day 10 and still ongoing. No bacterial cause found.

Well day 10 and still ongoing. No bacterial cause found.

Well friends had an infection, ruled clear by NHS. Eventually the Liverpool school of tropical medicine did tests and it was of Peruvian origin.

Another friend had a nasty come and go Egyptian one.

You were given advice to fast, that was the advice given for the Egyptian one.

So you could try fasting just drink water with electrolytes for at least 24 hours.

Otherwise plod on with the NHS getting further tests.

The pain in your side could be caused by lying on a sofa on your side for an unusual length of time. But please mention this to your GP as well.

justasking111 · 04/09/2024 11:35

After three weeks my GP prescribed Hycosine butylbromide. Two tablets four times a day for a week, they helped so much I was still careful what I ate for another two weeks.

whatiswrongwithmygut · 04/09/2024 16:16

@justasking111 i haven’t been lying around on the sofa. I’ve told my gp about it they’re doing bloods. Terrified I have pancreatic cancer.

OP posts:
TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 04/09/2024 18:39

Assuming they checked for parasites? There's a lot of cryptosporidium around this year, you get it from swimming pools and wild swimming. Hope you feel better soon, its miserable being ill!
