I have been taking thyroxine for years and have never heard of splitting it. I take it all in hte morning when I get up.

Octaviathethird · 22/04/2024 23:42

I take all mine in the morning too, as instructed to by my consultant. What's really important is to have it on an empty stomach and not eat for 30 mins - 1 hour afterwards.

shellyleppard · 22/04/2024 23:43

I take mine first thing in the morning on an empty stomach x

pelotonaddiction · 23/04/2024 00:10

I take mine all at once but at night

Maybeicanhelpyou · 23/04/2024 00:12

You should take it as prescribed, check with your GP/ pharmacist if you’re unsure

R41nb0wR0se · 23/04/2024 00:15

I'm on 225mcg, having had a total thyroidectomy. I've always taken as one dose, first thing in the morning, then try to leave 30-60 mins before caffeine/food/other medications.

Thyroxine has a fairly long half-life, so as long as you don't skip doses and are absorbing it properly, the levels in your body don't drop off hugely between doses, although some find night-time doses make them more wakeful (and/or morning doses help them wake up).

PoopingAllTheWay · 23/04/2024 00:16

Does it not say in the box on your prescription?

NOONE can tell you here.

Some people take it on a empty stomach, some dont ,

I personally dont worry if i have a empty stomach or not, im on 200mg, i take 16 pills a day and some of them have to be 2 hours apart so i cant possibly work it out that some are on an empty stomach and when i am in hospital, they put them all in a pot together

Just follow the instructions that your GP / Specialist said

Morning all in one dose for me alongside liothyrinine.

I take a weeks worth in one go on the advice of a consultant. Don't go making any changes without medical advice.

Morning all in one dose for me alongside liothyrinine.

I regret coming off T3 when pregnant- they won't put me on it again :'(

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 23/04/2024 00:26

I take t4 (thyroxine) 150mcg and t3 (liothyronine) 40mcg.

I was told to split the t3 dose 7am and 2pm. I take the 150 t4 with the first dose of t3.

I was told to take my lanzoprazole 4 hrs away from any thyroid drugs so I take that after 6pm.

Shouldnt lanzoprazole be in the morning before you are eating and drinking?

GenerousGardener · 23/04/2024 04:05

At night, before bed.

CrunchyCarrot · 23/04/2024 04:41

Don't split the dose, there's no point due to the long half-life of levothyroxine. If taking it in the morning, take one hour before eating anything on an empty stomach. You can also take it at bedtime instead, that seems to suit some people better. The main thing is to be consistent.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 23/04/2024 07:49

U@PoopingAllTheWay

I would have to get up at 3am to take it - and it would still be during the night.

It always says on the pharmacy label to leave at least four hours clear of any thyroid medication. When I questioned when to take it, I was told to take it 4 hours after last dose of thyroid medication. I could chose to take t4 at night because that dose does not have any immediate effects. But t3 must be taken during the day because its effects are immediate (very short half life, unlike t4) - if taken at night, I would not be able to sleep. I've also been told to never take t3 after mid afternoon because this would also affect sleep.

Thus, I have to take lanzoprazole after 6pm and, funnily enough, it does its job - I certainly know whenever I have forgotten to take it.

Weirdly, I split mine. Am on alternating days of 50/37.5 as can't tolerate 50 every day. I take a 25 in the morning and either a 25 again at night or a 12.5 at night depending on what I need that day. Seems to keep me stable- taking it all at once made me feel jittery. But now I wonder if that's why I don't sleep well 🤔

Same here

Half & half
You don't really need it, your symptoms can't be due to those numbers

Who knows - next is the argument for 75 mcg

Thanks everyone; I wonder if half & half makes me sleep better

That's not splitting your dose. That's an alternate day dose regime, ideally you would take around 44 mcg daily but dividing up pills to give that amount would be impossible, so easier to take 50 mcg one day and 37.5 mcg the next. Splitting a dose means dividing it up on a daily basis.

PostHummus · 24/04/2024 06:58

@CrunchyCarrot, but she is also splitting the dose.

LampShadeTaj · 24/04/2024 07:01

I can’t get T3. Wish I could.
I take 150mcg about now! Cos I don’t eat til later and have breakfast later in the morning or have brunch.

I might need to go on thyroid drugs so Im a bit worried about this, because Ive been told to take my antacids on an empty stomach, and like other posters Im on tons of medication and supplements that I have to work out not to counteract each other, so my antacid is normally taken at around 630 on an empty stomach

I dont find doctors advise what time to take drugs to be fair and when they do its opposite to what the pharmacist then says which differs again to advice on the packet etc

All this 'take as advised by your medical practitioner' is only any good if they're looking at everything else you take
