emandjules · 24/03/2008 15:19

cos tummy pains for a few weeks or more can be a sign of diabetes

thirst

weight loss

tiredness

Symptoms that are more typical for children include:

tummy pains

headaches

behaviour problems.

emandjules tbh thats what we been thinking, yes he drinks loads but gulps it dowm then as an other glass, he loves school nothing a miss there. we talked to him hes no idea how he feels?, also yesterday as little choc but when to bed and he got the shakes, he thought he was cold but he didnt feel cold or had a temp told me his head was funny and felt sick, i stayed with him while he slept and this morning hes very tired again dont want any easter eggs at all but hes eaten his dinner ok

could just be post viral syndrome. Try and get a wee sample and take it to drs tomorrow and the nurse/dr can dip it for sugar and ketones.

Trace diabetes would be my first port of call simply because it's very dangerous untreated. (My ds1 was diagnosed at 5 years old). He was ill and thin and had been really down and unable to sleep for months.

Either bring in some urine to the doctor or get him/her top do a finger prick test.

Good luck.

FrannyandZooey · 24/03/2008 16:02

I don't expect this is it but some of his symptoms did make me wonder if he could have a very bad case of threadworms? They can cause tiredness (sufferer is disturbed in the night by itchy feeling) and general malaise, and possibly even cause loss of appetite and weight loss

I do hope you get to the cause of it, what a worry for you

Spidermama · 24/03/2008 16:02

Sweet breath is definitely another symptom. Does it smell like pear drops. I would act fast.

FrannyandZooey · 24/03/2008 16:03

sorry missed your last post
breath does smell sweet (like pear drops) with ketosis doesn't it?

mankymummy · 24/03/2008 16:04

had exactly the same thing with my DS a few weeks ago, i was worried sick. he had blood tests, everything came back negative (except iron which im now giving him supplements for) and the doctor said it was probably just post-viral as there have been some nasty ones around. He is now back to his normal self.

i would take him to the doctors tomorrow though, just to put your mind at rest.

trace2 · 24/03/2008 16:10

thank all yes i am taking him tomorrow i will keep you all updated

his breath not sweet all the time and dont know weather i would say pear drops but sickly sweet.

Spidermama how is ds now? is it controlled ?, dont really want to think it will be it , but thats what we been thinking for a while now

shit just read up about it wish i hadnt this is just how he was last nigh.
Symptoms of the acidosis are:

fast, deep breathing

a smell of acetone on your breath

nausea and vomiting

stomach pains.
, but surly if that was the case he would be same today?

OP posts:
emandjules · 24/03/2008 16:24

if you have been thinking it for a while, i would take him somewhere tonight if you can and if not def tomorrow morning. If uncontrolled he
could go in a coma

trace2 · 24/03/2008 16:28

i made app last week for gp and like i said carnt get in till 8th april, but i will make sure they see him tomorrow now didnt think it could be that bad? , but yes hes ok today just tired

OP posts:
emandjules · 24/03/2008 16:30

Try a walk in centre if GP won't see him. A practice nurse will do. I do not mean to worry you. Another reason for acetone breath is the fact he is not eating, as that causes ketone build up as well.

noddyholder · 24/03/2008 16:30

Take him to A and E asap as he may need stabilising.Diabetes can escalate quite quickly and suddenly. Please take himxx

trace2 · 24/03/2008 16:36

just smelt his breath no sweetness today, and hes playing on his ds light so surlys hes ok to wait till tomorrow? and hes says hes ok

OP posts:
VictorianPASqualor · 24/03/2008 16:46

Not sure if they do it for children but Lloyds Pharmacy do a walk-in blood sugar test to check for diabetes for free.
Might be worth having a look.

emandjules · 24/03/2008 16:51

you have to be over 18yrs for lloyds to do test , bit ridiculous i know

CarGirl · 24/03/2008 16:53

Please get diabetes ruled out asap, one of the MNers had a close run thing with her older dd last year the same day that her gp laughed her suggestion of possible diabetes. I think the problem with diabetes is that they are okish for a long time and then a coma can hit with no extra warning.

trace2 · 24/03/2008 17:00

going to dads he as a finger prick thingy he dont use any more
