Has anyone had horrible side effects from trimethoprim (antibiotic)

Sorry I've also put this on a long running uti thread but just I'd ask with a new title too.
Month long uti which hasn't responded to two other antibiotics. Didn't have any side effects from the other two (Nitrofurantoin and amoxicillin) but with this one feel very very sick and shaky.
I think it probably IS side effects but trying to work out if it's that or uti worsening.

Yes!!! A few years ago, I was given this and felt bloody dreadful. Shaky, sick, wobbly all of this.
The gp concluded it was an allergy, and I've never been given it again. Horrible. I feel for you

dahliaaa · 01/02/2024 17:39

@Tortiemiaw thanks for quick reply. Did you stay on it for the full course ?

No. She gave me macrobid again. It became a bit of an issue as I kept getting horrid utis and couldn't take the trimethropin, but there is a strong alternative - I can't remember what it's called though! Sorr

Thank you useful to know

My son did - he’s non-verbal so it was hard to know what was going on but it was horrendous. If he felt sick & wobbly it would explain what we saw.

he switched to nitrofurantoin

BigButtons · 01/02/2024 17:45

I had a course for a sinus infection that wouldn’t clear. I felt ghastly on it and had really really awful nights and fever like dreams. I couldn’t finish the course I felt so unwell on it.

dahliaaa · 01/02/2024 17:57

Thank you for the experiences - it sounds like that's what it might be

Trimethoprim gave me a horrible outbreak of Hives years ago! I’ve had Nitrofurantoin which was ok, Cefalexin works well for me when I’ve had it

OttilieBottilie · 01/02/2024 18:00

After many years of use for recurring UTIs I started to come out in hives when taking trimethroprim. I always have nitrofurantoin now

dahliaaa · 01/02/2024 18:02

Thank you everyone. Unfortunately the infection is resistant to Nitrofurantoin

I’ve never had significant side effects from trimethoprim, but read the patient information leaflet inside the box as this will list the common and rarer side effects. I’m concerned that your symptoms could be indicative of a kidney infection. I would phone 111 tonight. Don’t want to alarm you but kidney infections can be serious and even lead to sepsis, so it’s best to be on the safe side! Hope you feel better soon!

Wishingonastar08 · 01/02/2024 18:06

@Tortiemiaw yes there is a stronger one I think beginning with S? My dad was prescribed this last year for UTI he was initially given Nitro he felt awful on it delirious which can be an indication of UTI but was worse with Niro. The dr sent off his sample & re-prescribed a stronger antibiotic think it was a certain bacteria found in his sample so switched

dahliaaa · 01/02/2024 18:07

@HollyNightingale I don't have a temperature and pulse is normal so was hoping was ok with that

Took this for an alleged UTI (no faith in GP diagnosing this correctly and seemed to just fling antibiotics at me) - my fingers swelled slightly and had blisters on my mouth. Absolutely bizarre reaction and never took it again!

HollyNightingale · 01/02/2024 18:15

@dahliaaa That’s a good sign! I don’t think you can go wrong by phoning for medical advice though. If you’ve had a UTI for a month, it could have spread to your kidneys.

Cephalexin is a good alternative.

That must have been so difficult for you all

My 3 year olds just had it and it gave her a rash all around her mouth. Never had reactions from other antibiotics

Thank you - will keep a close eye. Either way I think I'll probably need to contact gp in the morning to get advice on what to do.
I feel like such a complete nuisance - I've never contacted the dr so many times

OP posts:
DaisyCat33 · 01/02/2024 18:41

I'm allergic to this drug. I had an all over, hot blotchy rash when I took it years ago. Was advised to never have it again.

However I've had other antibiotics that have made me feel very sick too.

Definitely to back to GP if it doesn't improve. They won't think you a nuisance - I've seen my GP twice or three times a month since July for ongoing health issues 😂 I even made a joke about always being there and the GP said "well you wouldn't be if you were feeling well would you?". Made me feel better about it.

HollyNightingale · 01/02/2024 18:42

@dahliaaa I know how you feel, but it can’t be helped, and that’s what we pay our taxes for! Hope you get sorted soon!

dahliaaa · 01/02/2024 19:18

That's true I guess

CheerfulBunny · 01/02/2024 19:21

Yes. Had a UTI at university and was prescribed it, made me horribly nauseated and sick. When a doctor tried to prescribe it again I raised it and they assured me I was wrong. It did it again.

Menomeno · 01/02/2024 19:22

How long was your course of nitro? Sometimes they prescribe 3 or 5 days when you need a week or even ten days. Cefalexin always works for my recurrent UTIs when Nitro hasn’t worked. Has your GP sent a sample to the lab?

MrsHamlet · 01/02/2024 19:29

I ended up in a&e when my face and throat swelled.
