Has anyone had horrible side effects from trimethoprim (antibiotic)

Sorry I've also put this on a long running uti thread but just I'd ask with a new title too.
Month long uti which hasn't responded to two other antibiotics. Didn't have any side effects from the other two (Nitrofurantoin and amoxicillin) but with this one feel very very sick and shaky.
I think it probably IS side effects but trying to work out if it's that or uti worsening.

@CheerfulBunny did you take the full dose and did it work despite the horrible side effects

@Menomeno yes sent for culture. Showed resistant to Nitrofurantoin. Sensitive to amoxicillin (but had that for 7 days and didn't work) plus trimethoprim which I've now been on for 2 1/2 days.

Yes, trimethoprim triggered SJS. Thankfully it was relatively mild and I realised something was wrong very early on.

So I don't scare everyone off antibiotics with this thread - I should say that I had zero side effects with the other two ABs

Cephalexin is a good alternative.

That's the one I had I believe

pippapipps · 01/02/2024 23:42

Yes I'm allergic to it, I got a neck to foot blotchy rash with numbing around my mouth very scary
I have a history of recurrent uti's and am on a seven day course of Keflex at the moment
I always have an emergency antibiotic at home since I got sepsis from a uti in 2020

dahliaaa · 02/02/2024 00:08

@pippapipps sorry you've struggled so much with utis and ended up with sepsis. Hope this one clears quickly

For those who had a reaction - did it start immediately with first tablet - mine was after third tablet

Mine didn't happen until after I'd finished the entire course. Dr said it was unusual but it can happen.

So miserable. Changed back to amoxicillin because Dr thought it was probably a reaction (I had been fine on the amoxicillin week before but it hadn't cleared the infection.)
Anyway the sickness and stomach pain eased but I'm now so dizzy and light headed. Never had a reaction to amoxicillin before (although it's many years since I took any antibiotics.)
Dose doesn't finish until Friday which seems like a very long time away. Sad

Hi, please listen to this brilliant award winning new podcast on chronic urinary tract infections (CUTIs), highly recommend if you're wanting to learn more about the little know topic of CUTIs. Its brilliantly researched and a really important topic everyone should be aware of that aims to help women advocate for themselves in the face of stubborn GPs and a medical world that has historically ignored womens health.

Yes, in my case the whites of my eyes turned to 'jelly' it was disgusting, after one tablet.

Other antibiotics sorted the UTI

One thing I took away from it was to never take the first tablet just before going to bed, if you have a reaction it helps to be aware!
