Cyst: how long for antibiotics to work?

Hi,
I have suffered with cysts for a while, normally they go away on their own. However, this one came up in my groin area on Saturday evening and yesterday it just felt different and I knew it was only going to get worse. I paid for a private GP appointment this morning and I was given flucloxacillin I took my first tablet at 12 and I have since had 3 more I have 1 more left, but the cyst is not going down in sign and it is getting more painful and it is pulsating. I don't have a bath so I can't sit in hot water, but I have tried bathing it with warm water and this has not done anything.

how long do I leave it before I go to out of hours? Or how long should it take for the flucloxacillin to take the size of the cyst down?

I’m really no expert on medication, but I’ve had my fair share of boils/antibiotics 🙁. All the times I have had antibiotics, I have had to take them for 7-10 days. Yours seems to be a very short dose. I generally notice an improvement from day2/3 onwards.

Can you call nhs 24 and ask for advice? I’d go to a&e as you’re in pain as they could cut it and it might all heal a lot faster.

They said unless I start showing signs of sepsis to wait it out unless something drastically changes

If it’s a lot more painful, is that a fairly significant change from this morning? I’ve had quite a few, one got quite big and I didn’t go, burst and took months and months to heal. Sounds like yours may well burst if it’s painful - good luck, they’re super rubbish.

I've had two operated on but they weren't painful like this, this one ebbs and flows it will pulsate then harden and then when it softens gets more squishy it's painful, when I take the antibiotic it pulsates, it has localised since this morning it was spreading more into my leg but it's definitely localised and got firmer (less like a blister)?

Ah, I get you! Apologies for misunderstanding.

Would it be worth putting a warm compress on it, maybe? If it continues to worsen tomorrow, it may be worth ringing 111.

BYDboard · 19/12/2023 07:26

so horrible - hopefully it looks better this morning?

ChocHotolate · 19/12/2023 08:47

Antibiotics take between 36-48 hrs to start to work, hopefully it will improve soon

Yeah it's super sore, I'm nervous about the pain of the anaesthetic and then slicing it but it can't be no worse then the pain of the cyst

I’ve got my fingers crossed for surgical a&e - I hope it saves pain in the end for being done and dusted sooner…

I'm in London, heading to Guys and St Thomas's as it says they treat them, I'm telling myself the pain of anaesthetic and slicing it won't be as bad as the pain it's causing.

i think I'm nervous because it's in my groin so it probably will hurt, but I sense it's burning as it wants to burst

Yes reckon you’re right - hope it’s all ok

RougeFraise · 19/12/2023 18:54

Hi OP
How is now?
I've got the same thing. Started Monday night. Managed to see GP this morning as I felt it was getting worse and prescribed Fluxocillin etc.
Said its definitely infected as looking g very inflamed and sore so to see how I get on with antibiotics but to head to A&E if any signs of fever or pain gets worse.
I have private Gynaecologist appt on Friday which GP said to definitely keep as will most likely need draining.
Can't work out if pain is getting worse.. standing & walking definitely hurt most.

How are you doing?
