Cyst: how long for antibiotics to work?

Hi,
I have suffered with cysts for a while, normally they go away on their own. However, this one came up in my groin area on Saturday evening and yesterday it just felt different and I knew it was only going to get worse. I paid for a private GP appointment this morning and I was given flucloxacillin I took my first tablet at 12 and I have since had 3 more I have 1 more left, but the cyst is not going down in sign and it is getting more painful and it is pulsating. I don't have a bath so I can't sit in hot water, but I have tried bathing it with warm water and this has not done anything.

how long do I leave it before I go to out of hours? Or how long should it take for the flucloxacillin to take the size of the cyst down?

Glad it's feeling less sore...
What was the next step after it burst? Did they send you back and just tell you to stick with the antibiotics?
Did you feel relief when it popped?

My pain is manageable as long as lie or sit. Gravity is the enemy!

I couldn't sit down or lay down and I couldn't walk squatting was my only comfortable position.

they said continue with my antibiotics and ask for more if it hasn't gone.

yes, I'm still hobbling because I'm sore but can get up and down easier

That's great it's got somewhere to go because the worst thing for an abscess is it being stuck under the skin and tunnelling.

Keep an eye on it, keep it clean and keep on top of pain relief/antibiotics.

Oof sounds like I'm mine isnt as bad as yours was... or maybe it's yet to come..!
Hopefully you're on the mend and the anti biotics do their thing.

I'm hoping I can hold out til Gynaecologist on Friday for draining.

I would say the sitting on it in A&E probably caused it to burst so even though it is painful. Do try to put pressure on it.

I've put the shower over and then I put a gauze over the top of it in my pants, urinating makes it sting, which is particularly sore.

@MotherOfRatios good to
Know! Was yours confirmed as a Bartholin's Cyst?
My GP confirmed it is definitely an infected blocked Bartholin's and the trouble with those are that the block tube is inside the vagina, and apparently even if it unblocks and releases some liquid it closes back uo again very quickly, so it's not
Like it 'bursts' as such

I had one of those, absolute agony so I feel for you. I found gauze, cotton wool and held in place with some cohesive bandage helped a lot with the discomfort. But it burst while I was waiting to see the OOH GP, he drained it properly then they packed and dressed it and I had to go back 2/3 times to have the dressing changed. It doesn't sound like they've done that which is surprising. I'd phone your GP and see what they advise doing.

Do you mean a Bartholin's Cyst or a groin cyst like the OP has?

CrotchetyQuaver · 21/12/2023 13:24

One in the groin just like the OP, not quite sure how you could bandage the other sort, thankfully I've never had one?

Just so much fun eh? And my
local pharmacy is absolutely useless for anything bigger than a strip of plaster…Amazon turned out to have a really good range of bigger bandages etc.

I wish I knew how to prevent them but there doesn’t seem to be anything.

Hi, I can totally relate to dealing with cysts; I’ve had some myself. In my experience, antibiotics like Amoxil (amoxicillin) can be really helpful in reducing the size and pain associated with them. The last time I had a cyst, I was prescribed Amoxil, and it took about 2-3 days to start noticing a significant difference. It helped a lot with the swelling, and the pain lessened considerably by the second day of treatment.

The most important thing is to make sure you’re using a high-quality antibiotic, as it can make all the difference in your recovery. I always order my Amoxil from a trusted pharmacy: delivery-service24.com/?product=amoxil, because I know I’ll get great results every time. I recommend sticking with the full course of antibiotics and giving them a couple of days to work. If it doesn’t improve or if it gets worse, definitely don’t hesitate to reach out to out-of-hours care. 🚑 💊
