How much sugar (chocolate, sweets etc.) do you consume a day?

I have a massive sweet tooth and I eat a variation of chocolate, sweets, biscuits or cakes most days. My dentist has told me I drastically need to cut back my sugar in take but I know I won't be able to just go cold turkey. So I don't know whether to just try and cut back to once a week or a few times a weeks as I don't want to suddenly binge. So how often do you eat sweet food?

Never. My teeth start to hurt if I try. Just go cold turkey. I find it much harder to stay off sweet food after I've had some. So I just don't have it in the house, and then I don't think about it. I haven't had a filling in nearly thirty years because of this.

PaminaMozart · 06/12/2023 16:48

Rarely.

It's not just the teeth. Sugar fucks up one's health in so many other ways.

When I read The Sugar Solution by Dr Mark Hyman I never looked back.

The Glucose Goddess and Dr Becky Gillaspy (on YouTube) are also very informative and motivating.

ChristmasSteps295 · 06/12/2023 16:48

Not a lot. I might have a ice lolly after my dinner here and there.

If you don't eat it, you don't crave it.

SpottyCrumpet · 06/12/2023 16:52

I actually found the best thing to do was go cold Turkey. So long as you’re having it, your body craves it. It takes a few days but then you don’t want it any more.

I’ve tried other options in the past like switching to just dark chocolate or tapering down slowly but it didn’t work for me.

i do have sweet treats but now they’re more like once or twice a week with some weeks of none at all.

the best thing for me was looking at it as a cancer causing nastiness. Like literally cancer in a packet. That soon stopped me wanting it (I have a fear of having cancer)

mambojambodothetango · 06/12/2023 16:54

Maybe a bit of chocolate once a week, but not every week. Cake maybe about the same. It's definitely habit. Have less and you'll want it less.

SirenSays · 06/12/2023 16:57

Lots! Smoothies, fruit juices, cake, chocolate, sweets, biscuits.... I promise myself I'll cut down but never do.

passiveaggressivenonsense · 06/12/2023 16:57

Sugars addictive ! Just stop! Don't buy any more am after a few days the cravings will go and then things like fruit taste amazingly sweet and as an added bonus you will stop feeling hungry.

Catswillbecats · 06/12/2023 16:58

Every day. I eat a healthy vegetarian diet throughout the day. In the evening after dinner I have a couple of biscuits or a crème caramel. I don't drink alcohol ever nor do I smoke. I think this is fine!

Unabletomitigate · 06/12/2023 17:21

Watch what you substitute too.
All carbohydrates break down to sugar in the end, so all your bread and pasta etc. is just sugar in the end.

chocolatedream23 · 06/12/2023 17:26

I have some chocolate every day. Not always a huge amount, usually just a biscuit with my tea or a few chocolates from the tub at work but definitely something every day.

LunaTheCat · 06/12/2023 17:27

I have been sugar free 2 weeks and it has been transformative!
no bread, pasta, potatoes, rice. I am feeling so much better and because I am filling up with protein and good fats am not hungry … check out Real Life Medicine. I am allowed dark chocolate, strawberries and whipped cream and I feel satisfied… did have an Xmas mince pie yesterday though!

SurvivalKits · 06/12/2023 17:34

My skin's looking the best it's ever been since I stopped the whipped cream, so you might want to watch that.

I’m the same -but have just discovered that I have high cholesterol and high blood pressure … just starting to cut down

BigBoysDontCry · 06/12/2023 17:39

None really. Had a high blood sugar reading and gave it up.

Menomeno · 06/12/2023 17:39

I used to eat a lot and ended up pre-diabetic. So I cut out all sweets, biscuits, cake etc and now the only sugar I have is one in my coffee (3 times a day). I’ll have an occasional treat but tbh it’s usually in situations where I accept to be polite rather than because I want it.

Farmchild · 06/12/2023 17:40

I eat roughly around 5 or 6 regular sized bars of chocolate each day. I haven't had a cold or virus since 2017 and am generally very fit and healthy, size 10.

I'm aware people say it's bad for you but I'm in my 50s and it's never done me any harm, have always eaten this much.

(That being said, my uncle was a raging alcoholic and barely ate, simply downed vodka and he has only just passed at the age of 98 so 🤷)

Goatymum · 06/12/2023 17:42

No refined sugar or carbs so I bake my own treats using maple syrup
or date sugar (just dried/powdered dates). I’ll use local or Manuka honey too sometimes (t latter for healing purposes).
When I ate ‘normally’ I’d have something like a Kit Kat or biscuit after lunch and sometimes ice cream after dinner. I didn’t really buy bars of choc, but I’d go out and have cakes etc.
Im doing my diet for a medical
condition but since ring in it I can see how unhealthy my diet was and how ultra processed so much of our food is, I don’t even want to go back to my old ways.

Nimblesandbimbles · 06/12/2023 17:45

Just to say it’s more complex than saying sugar causes cancer. It’s worth checking out what Macmillan has to say about this. It’s a bit of a bugbear of mine. That being said no one NEEDS refined sugar in their diet so I suppose if that stops you eating it that’s ok.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 06/12/2023 17:45

Hardly any, but that's not due to any willpower ok my part. I don't have a sweet tooth. Salty snacks are my weakness - I'd always go for crisps over a biscuit or chocolate.

Payakan · 06/12/2023 17:49

Almost never. Christmas is not really the best season to cut, but I would try to have quality sweet moments, more than mindlessly munching on something or eating out of habits.
In other words, being conscious of what you eat. Sweets should be the first to go, and biscuits maybe have the one with your afternoon tea, instead of grabbing one every time you transit by the kitchen.

NonanteNeuf · 06/12/2023 17:50

I had to give up chocolate because of my inability to control the carbs I eat.

I went off all sugar and starches for a year. I lost 8 stone and now have to eat low carb to keep it off. I don’t eat anything except Lindt 90%

IsItOverYetAndCanIComeOutNow · 06/12/2023 17:50

Rarely. Never buy sweets, biscuits, cake etc. Occasionally buy some 70% chocolate and a big bar will last at least a couple of weeks.

Cantbeardarknights · 06/12/2023 18:01

Literally never. I can honestly say I can’t remember the last time I ate a biscuit sweet cake ice cream or dessert. If you asked me about my salt intake on the other hand…..

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 06/12/2023 18:06

Every day. A Christmas selection box isn't special as its basically my regular diet. I see as bad as smoking and as difficult to quit.

SpottyCrumpet · 06/12/2023 18:07

@Nimblesandbimbles sugar doesn’t. All the chemicals and other shit in processed junk food does though. So it’s easier to just label it like that.
