How much sugar (chocolate, sweets etc.) do you consume a day?

I have a massive sweet tooth and I eat a variation of chocolate, sweets, biscuits or cakes most days. My dentist has told me I drastically need to cut back my sugar in take but I know I won't be able to just go cold turkey. So I don't know whether to just try and cut back to once a week or a few times a weeks as I don't want to suddenly binge. So how often do you eat sweet food?

I only have chocolate or cake at the weekend now. I used to have chocolate every day & it did me no favours. Am now much healthier & lighter!

I was refined sugar free for a couple of years. I now eat family sized bars or multiple bars of chocolate a day. I’m aware I need to stop, but I’m getting worse not better. I’m sure my cholesterol must be getting high but I kid myself I’m okay because I’m slim.

In my head I think I don’t eat much sugar, but there’s sugar in blueberries, there’s sugar in maca powder, and there’s a hell of a lot of sugar in the goji berries I have with my porridge.

Even healthy, ‘mindful’ eating can have high sugar content. :(

Too much and I'm stopping in January. I've managed to outrun a shite diet until now with lucky genetics and activity but it's catching up with me. Teeth lost the battle long ago with fillings aplenty.
It's biscuits and chocolate for me, an unhealthy taste for wine since 2020 and of course my greatest love, sliced white bread toast.

Sweets - rarely. I binge on haribo maybe four times a year.

Chocolate - most days. Chocolate bar or something.

Cake - depends. I don't always have any in the house but if I bake then loads! Reckon about averages as every 3/4 days.

Fruit juice - loads. Probably three glasses a day.

I think it's pointless to argue whether sugar is addictive or merely habit forming since it is clear that many people find it difficult to moderate their sugar intake.

Sugar may not be addictive in the same way coke or heroin are, but it definitely feeds cravings. The body get used to having a constant supply of glucose. The associated insulin spikes in turn release dopamine....... which feels sooooo good.

Reducing consumption of sugar and refined carbs can only be a good thing. You may feel fine and all your blood values are within normal range, but once you get older, complications such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease are very real risks.

It makes it harder to give up if people have the excuse that sugar is addictive and therefore difficult.

I'm trying to lose a little weight, so I'm averaging around 60g of sugar a day at the moment.

I have a square of dark chocolate occasionally (I keep it in stock for baking) but other than that, rarely. Xmas sometimes but sometimes not even then, not a fan of sweet things at all really. Lucky perhaps? I do drink too much wine though, does that count?

Somedays all i eat is rubbish sweet stuff. We were just saying that although i look healthy( slim and toned) my insides probably tell a different story.

I need to rebalance my diet i suppose, but i dont really enjoy food, so i eat what i enjoy, which is rubbish sweet stuff 🙈

@tiggergoesbounce - part of the problem is that sugar is so powerful, both in terms of its taste and its effect on our metabolism, that it literally assaults our taste buds - to the extent that they no longer appreciate the more subtle tastes of vegetables.

The only way is to try to wean oneself off sugar - or go cold turkey - and learn to really savour these more subtle flavors. Slowly chew a carrot or some beetroot etc and reawaken one's taste buds.

Using lots of herbs as well as spices can also help beat sugar 'addiction'.

I have such a sweet tooth and if I try to cut it out completely I just crave it and end up eating too much. If I know I have a sweet treat coming at the end of the day with my evening cup of tea I can usually hold out for that. It is usually just something small like a few squares of dark chocolate or a small biscuit but it works for me. I also think with your teeth its just your genes (providing you brush and floss) I ate so much sweet stuff growing up, and drank so much fizzy juice and had tea with two sugars and don't have any fillings at all.

I get the bags of mini 'Fun size' chocolates, Asda ones.
They're basically mini fakes of proper ones, I have maybe 3-4 a day at about 8pm when I'm watching the telly.

my mum used to always have a big round tin of biscuits when I were a kid in the 80s. The evening time was soaps and a biscuit. On very rare occasions we got branded ones, really really nice. We got to pick 2 each. (Secretly though, my favourites were the packs of broken biscuits. They were awesome because we were allowed more than two.. 🤣)

Basically, I've been having a little bit of sweet stuff every night my entire life instead of huge amounts of sweet stuff once or twice a week iyswim.

I probably have some every day - usually a few biscuits, some chocolate, a small piece of cake etc. I have struggled with disordered eating most of my life so it's better for me to eat something sugary than nothing at all. I try to carry sweets with me because I often forget meals and my blood pressure/sugar crashes. So sugar has saved me from fainting many times. But I would probably eat less of it if I had consistent meals!

Zero, I was a sugar addict consuming 2-3 200g bags of Foxes Glacier Mints a day, but got pneumonia & haven't touched one since. The pneumonia made me so ill I haven't vaped since either.

Maybe once a week I would have a couple squares of chocolate. Once every few weeks for cake/biscuit/ice cream. Maybe twice a week half a teaspoon of sugar in a cup of tea.

I went cold turkey. It’s so addictive but once you stop eating junk you don’t crave it any where near as much.

See when i do eat, i tend to enjoy the vegetables over anything Cauli and Brocoli its like i can feel and taste the goodness in them 🤣🤣

I am a picker, i eat cheeses and meats and mezze style eating when i do eat proper food, i dont like a big meal..

Using lots of herbs as well as spices can also help beat sugar 'addiction'.
