What is this bloody hip pain about?!

febbabies2023 · 11/11/2023 19:01

Had hip pain for about 6-8 weeks now. Started off small but gradually getting worse and can be painful when lying on that side
It's the left mostly

Went to the GP as symptoms included fatigue and headaches, the hip pain and then blood in the urine which is why I actually went to the GP

No UTI

Awaiting blood tests this coming Thursday but what on earth could be causing it?!

For reference I'm 29 female, 9m old and 3 year old. Never had problems with my hips before.

I know the obvious could be cancer. Trying not to think of that being a possibility.

However my mum did die from cancer (liver and bone) so it's in the back of my mind

Pain from the hip joint is felt in the groin. Pain felt over the outside of the hip, such as when lying on the side is usually related to the fascial strap running over the trochanter, commonly referred to as trochanteric bursitis, which is nothing to be worried about and usually relatively easily improved with stretches. Google will help- try to find an NHS website for some physio advice.

I am not medically qualified to answer but I experienced hip pain when I was low in vitamin D. If all else comes back normal, it might be worth getting your level of D3 in the blood checked. Good luck.

Unicorntastic · 11/11/2023 19:31

Following with interest as I’m suffering the same thing, only on the left which I mainly lie on. I’ve had it before and it always eventually goes away. Interesting about the vitamin D though, I’ll look into that.

I was in awful pain with burstits in my hip, as suggested by PP. It cleared really quickly when I started taking high strength turmeric. I was skeptical, but had been taking too much ibuprofen and was told turmeric has the same anti inflammatory effect.

febbabies2023 · 11/11/2023 19:46

Thank you - and interesting responses

To clarify, the pain is always there and is getting worse. It's worse when lying on it, or if I'm carrying the baby etc but even walking is painful on that side

I do go to the gym and regularly incorporate stretching into that so I would assume that would help

I guess the fatigue and blood in urine with the hip pain is what's concerned me :(

I've got right hip tendonitis (sp?) it mainly feels uncomfortable at night especially in my right leg. The physio has given me strengthening exercises & my gp has offered to get me a hip injection if the discomfort worsens.

Has your gp done a proper physical examination of the range of movement of your hip? If not you should see another gp once your blood results are back if the bloods rule out anything sinister.
The fatigue, headaches & blood in urine may or may not be a separate issue to your hip pain.

If in the end you turn out to have either bursitis or tendonitis then referral to a physio is a good idea.

Thank you - no he didn't do any physical exam. I think his first thought was to rule out a UTI (which we have) and get that sent off for testing (no idea what for tho) and to get bloods done - assuming he's requested a full blood count to be done

Yes when those come back I'll see where we are if there's nothing glaringly obvious

Is it more of a burning pain? I have bursitis in my hip which sounds very similar. It flares up and dies down. I just take naproxen when it flares.

No I wouldn't say a burning pain... I don't really know how to describe it, it's just -there- unless I'm sat perfectly still 😂

Just an annoying pain that's worse with certain activity etc

I have osteoarthritis in my hips so on strong painkillers daily. Hopefully you don't need to go down that route! An x-ray showed osteoarthritis in my situation.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 11/11/2023 20:31

I had a hip replacement in my mid-forties. Contrary to what a PP said, my pain was never in my groin. I had a needle sharp pain when walking and a pain ache in my buttock that never went away. I could never get comfortable at night.

Lucy377 · 11/11/2023 20:34

How old is your baby, is it your first and do you carry them around on that side?

Other question, have you had an eating disorder or very low dairy intake for the past 10 years?

gofullpelt · 11/11/2023 20:34

I had awful hip pain especially when lying on that side, it was bursitis (some kind of inflammation). The other symptoms could be totally unrelated.

amylou8 · 11/11/2023 20:37

Do you drive? I had horrible hip pain for months after getting a new car. Eventually put two and two together and completely cured it by adjusting the seat.

She's 9 months and my second. Yes sometimes but I don't tend to carry her around too much as she's bloody heavy

No, no issues with EDs or lack of dairy intake (I love my cheese and yoghurt etc)

I do drive but I've had the same car for 3 years - it's also one of those ones where it 'remembers' your seat position so that hasn't changed either

Did you ever figure it out?

Pugdays · 24/01/2024 03:35

We got a new ,cheaper mattress, and that set off awful hip pain for me
I roll a towel up in to a cylinder shape and put that under my hip ,right in my waist and lay on it to sleep..
Pain all gone ,I just needed support to shop my spine sagging
I'm surprised it worked as I was worried it was cancer or something the pain. I mean

Pugdays · 24/01/2024 03:36

Stop ,not shop

febbabies2023 · 25/01/2024 21:33

@Edl no! Blood tests came back fine. No blood in urine since but the hip pain is still there, some days worse than others
I've considered going back to the GP but I also think what's the point if bloods have come back ok

Exactly where are you feeling the pain?

Lifeofasd1 · 26/01/2024 03:44

Work in this field, outer hip pain when lying on tour side is bursitis, more common in women as our hips are wider, hence the sloping of your leg is more pronounced than in a male. Put a pillow in between your legs when lying down to prevent the dragging down angle, your leg positioned at.
Inner hip pain, by your groin, is coming from your hip, you will an xray to begin with ams pending that result, an mri.

Edl · 26/01/2024 20:08

@Lifeofasd1 i feel like the pain is on the bone. I have very high anxiety and thinking the worst case scenario.

Edl · 26/01/2024 20:09

@DrBalenciaga i feel like it’s on my bone which is making me really stressed.
