What is this bloody hip pain about?!

febbabies2023 · 11/11/2023 19:01

Had hip pain for about 6-8 weeks now. Started off small but gradually getting worse and can be painful when lying on that side
It's the left mostly

Went to the GP as symptoms included fatigue and headaches, the hip pain and then blood in the urine which is why I actually went to the GP

No UTI

Awaiting blood tests this coming Thursday but what on earth could be causing it?!

For reference I'm 29 female, 9m old and 3 year old. Never had problems with my hips before.

I know the obvious could be cancer. Trying not to think of that being a possibility.

However my mum did die from cancer (liver and bone) so it's in the back of my mind

@Edl it's funny because mine feels like it's on the bone too! It doesn't hurt to lie on, walking is actually completely fine. I find it's worse when I've been in the same position for longer periods of time and then move etc. I would assume it was more of an arthritic thing for me but I'm 29 😂🤷🏽‍♀️

@febbabies2023 did they do xray or scan?

justasking111 · 26/01/2024 21:23

I had this type of pain it was actually my lower back mainly the MRI showed. Consultant said exercise so I saw a physio lady who's helped with particular exercises. Hip flexors mainly. I can't sit on the sofa unless I lie along it. Dining chairs and sitting in the car can cause pain.

NoisyDachshunddd · 26/01/2024 21:27

This sounds so much like trochanteric bursitis. I had it at same life stage (carrying babies one-sided after an onslaught of pregnancy and breastfeeding hormones). It’s totally treatable with postural and weight bearing changes and a lovely, lovely shot of lidocaine/ steroid into the bursa.

candycane222 · 26/01/2024 21:32

I find physios are a lot more help with joint pain than GPs - not surprising I suppose as their whole training and experience is on how bodies move and what can go wrong!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/01/2024 21:35

I agree with @justasking111 , have you considered your hip flexors? I had hip flexor tendonitis, and it is so painful, it feels like your bone is crumbling but it’s because the hip flexor comes from lower back, right round and down the front of your pelvis into your groin. It takes all the strength out of your hip. I saw a physio for mine in the end and it took a complete rest from the gym and running for it to heal, it still twinges every now and then.

justasmalltownmum · 26/01/2024 21:39

Are you Breast feeding?

Only asking as I had this, went for blood tests and it was lack of vit D.

NoisyDachshunddd · 26/01/2024 21:59

Must say tho that my hip bursitis, when at its worst, was very noticeable when I started walking from a resting position. And also when lying on it. You know when you’ve had a flu jab in your arm or you’ve worked a muscle set really hard in the gym and have aching on exertion? It felt a bit like that.

Rather than us all guessing, which can be dangerous, I’d go back to your GP, again,
and explain it is not getting better and ask what the next step is. Often women just put up and shut up, particularly younger women where things can be blamed on posture, diet, the pressures of a young family etc.

You can say you’re worried about cancer for understandable reasons, and would like a treatment plan.

I only got the curative steroid shot after maybe 3 visits and I had absolutely no worries about cancer as it was so localized and specific. Yours is probably something really similar but none of us can really tell, and you absolutely deserve it sorting out. Looking after tiny kids is hard enough without annoying and (I’d bet my bottom dollar on …) solveable aches and pains.

For bursitis, or problems with the hip tendon and advice from my physio is not to stretch. On seats, raise yourself so hip higher than knees. Don't stand in a "hip hang" or sit cross legged. And see a physio! Some good videos from physios online on lateral hip pain to help you manage symptoms in the interim.

febbabies2023 · 26/01/2024 23:23

Thank you all, this is really helpful advice

@NoisyDachshunddd you're right, after bloods came back fine I thought 'ah well, must just be another part of post partum' so just getting on with it. I struggle with sciatica at times too sometimes quite severely after having kids, another joy!

@justasmalltownmum no wasn't breastfeeding!

I wouldn't be surprised if my hip back was related to my back pain (although that doesn't seem bad at the moment) it all appears to be connected.
I'll look at some physio too as that seems to be the way to go if the Gp can't do much

@febbabies2023 do you have lower back pain? My hip flexor pain feels almost like kidney pain in my back when I’m starting a flare up. These tendons (especially in runners/gym goers/other leggy sports) are huge. Imagine a rope the diameter of a 2p piece. You can feel your tendon in the inside of your upper thigh, it’s a serious piece of body kit and it does a significant role of holding you up and moving you around. They come from the lower back, right down and round into the front of your thigh so if that area is feeling sore, weak, burny, twinging or low, dull, aching, then it’s a good place to start. Mine was so bad and I put off going because I thought it was my hip bone.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/01/2024 08:15

And don’t go to the gp, they’ll give you ibuprofen and tell you to rest. If you can possibly afford a PAYG physio, they will look at the mechanics of your whole body and rather than just treat the symptoms they will tell you why you’re feeling it in your hip. Mine was due to a compensation for an old hammie injury that I’d rested but not strengthened so my hip flexor was doing all the hard work when I was running. I think I paid £60 for a one off consultation.

febbabies2023 · 27/01/2024 19:29

@thenewaveragebear1983 yes I get back pain, but when the back pain is bad it's also down my right leg to my ankle and I would say that's sciatica to be honest so I'm not sure it's related. When the back pain comes on badly it's sudden and I genuinely cannot move for about 4/5 days I'm in agony with it. Then it subsides for another 4/5 months until it hits me again!

Do you get groin pain

febbabies2023 · 27/01/2024 21:29

@justasking111 no, no groin pain that I recall!

justasking111 · 27/01/2024 22:31

Twisting, lifting are both things you do all the time with tots. If your back is weakened by pregnancy then you can have issues. You'll have to try not to twist or lift for a while. See a physiotherapist and start the exercises. Lie on the sofa cushion under lower back rather than sit with feet on the ground when you're resting.

Sleep with a pillow between your knees if you can. I can't. Keep moving.

Did you know that Muslims who use prayer mats are much less likely to suffer back issues. Because it's really good for the hips.

@febbabies2023 @Edl hi, so sorry to reply so long after you started this thread! I'm currently experiencing the same and worried out of my mind, please could I ask if you ever got to the bottom of this? I've got awful left hip pain, on the front outer hip that came on from nowhere and is INTENSE. Can't tell if I have a lump on the bone or if that's always been there...worried sick as it feels like the bone is sore and I haven't injured it or done anything differently 😥😥😥 thank you so much in advance ❤️ x

Pain from the hip joint is felt in the groin. Pain felt over the outside of the hip, such as when lying on the side is usually related to the fascial strap running over the trochanter, commonly referred to as trochanteric bursitis, which is nothing to be worried about and usually relatively easily improved with stretches. Google will help- try to find an NHS website for some physio advice.

This-or maybe greater trochanteric pain syndrome. Some good physio will help

@MrsElijahMikaelson1 thank you! I work in Oncology so naturally my brain associates everything with the worst case scenario because it's all I see 🫣🫣 x
