Long story short I took some rescue pet rats and they're not friendly

Last night one got me and wouldn't bloody let go

Over night my finger has gone red and swelled but don't know if it's just bruised and swollen due to the bite , would infection set in this quick ?

merrymelodies · 04/10/2023 02:38

Watch out for rabies.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/10/2023 02:40

bemorebernard · 03/10/2023 23:54

It's a domestic pet rat in the uk

No
Rabies here .

Sorry, missed that!

bemorebernard · 04/10/2023 02:41

I rang and the wait wasn't any better so given I have a consultant appt in morning I'm going to do that then go to a&e after

I totally understand it needs seeing to, but I need to keep my consultant appt so gonna sleep now and go straight from my appointment tomorrow.

Ooh doc Said yes needs a tetanus and needs to be seen so accept that and will go straight from my appt.

Thanks all for pushing me to ring I'm a head burier as I hate hospitals and I have to do everything under my own steam and this felt stupid really as ,y own fault for taking these rats in first place ....my dd warned me not to and has had a ball saying I told you so.

I just could t see them Euthanised , been in tonight with gardening gloves on!

Good result op, sleep well 💤

seagulldown · 04/10/2023 02:54

Glad you will be seen to asap tomorrow.

And thank you for rescuing the rats, there was something on the radio the other day about the massive increase in small animals being given up at the moment. Pet rats are usually lovely, but these don't sound well socialised with humans.

Let us know how you get on and hope the rats get friendlier soon

We're still having cuddles despite the mishaps

(She's not the biter btw....she's absolutely gorgeous) I felt I had to
Get back on the horse as it were and handle one and this one came straight to me for cuddles tonight.
I'll try again tomorrow.
I'm going to try spoon feeding something like peanut butter so they get used to licking not chomping

That is a very cute rat!
Hope you're okay today and get seen quickly.

You'll need fluxocillin for a skin infection not amoxcillin. Hopefully 111 can simply prescribe it for you based on information you provide. However really do look out for those sepsis symptoms. Good luck op

That antibiotic put DH in hospital for a fortnight with liver problems after he was prescribed it for a skin infection. It's a pretty rare side effect, but enough to cause flucloxacillin not to be used in the US and Australia. When DD was prescribed it some years later I was on tenterhooks, but she was fine. https://bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/j.1365-2125.2005.02370.x

I'm glad you are getting it seen. My cat had a very nasty bite from another cat recently and the vet said he knew a vetinary nurse who had lost a finger after a cat bite. She left it overnight and by the time she was seen it had to be amputated.

You need to thin the peanut butter down or they can choke on it as it's so thick. They're probably terrified and not used to friendly hands. You'll win them over with nice treats.

You're very kind, I'd have booted it over the hedge. How's the hand today?

Oh dear, poor ratty.

bemorebernard · 04/10/2023 17:54

It's actually looking a heap better today so I didnt want to waste hospital time, I'm already on a shedload of antibiotics for other conditions.

That's why it's looking better!
Are you sure you don't need a tetanus jab?

bemorebernard · 04/10/2023 18:47

When I was bitten by a dog a couple of years ago they did a blood prick test and I still had immunity to tetanus so I think I'll be ok.

Things apparently like biting me , dogs, ticks , rats 😂. I just really felt going today given how much better it looks, would waste a&e time really.

olympicsrock · 04/10/2023 18:49

Glad it is looking much better. Keep it elevated and take at least 5 days or abx

Judyjoo · 04/10/2023 21:40

That does look a lot better, it looked really sore as much as anything else! Thank goodness you had ABs to hand.

lljkk · 05/10/2023 20:53

Glad ur better.

Elieza · 06/10/2023 21:08

Phew glad it’s so much better.

You’ve done a good thing helping abandoned pets. They perhaps aren’t well socialised. Hope they realise they have a friend helping them and stop the biting!
