Can anyone tell me if this is a tonsil cyst?

Hi I'm Emmy,

I've been rundown after last year because my daughter got very poorly and it was such a stressful time. Well at the end of the year I developed a sore throat, tonsillitis I think but antibiotics didn't really help and now all these months later it's still sore and my left tonsil is painful, red a little white and swollen like a bit of a lump.

No bleeding or any other worrying symptoms other than pain and tiredness. I think it might be a cyst but I was wondering if anyone else here has experienced the same or knows if it a cyst or a stone and what can be done about it? My other tonsil is looking a little red and different but not like this left one.

Thanks so much hope someone can help.

Get a dentist appt they'll be able to help you identify the problem. Hope you feel better soon x

I’d go to the GP and get checked out, will take five mins and give you peace of mind

Thanks. I'm on the waiting list to see a dentist so if going to the GP doesn't help then I'll try the dentist as and when the appointment comes through.

Yes I think that's the first thing to try. I am on a waiting list to see a dentist but it could be a while. I might have to actually go to the GP surgery, even when calling at 8am the phone queues are over 20 people. Hoping it won't be anything serious.

if you phone 111 they'll be able to advise you where your closest NHS dental walk in centre is.
A dentist is a doctor of the mouth. A GP doesn't really know about mouths. (I work in dentistry). Of course a good point of call if you have no dental walk in clinic or dentist as they can refer you on if needed but people seem to forget that anything for the mouth is a dentist.

Hope you feel better son.

Thank you. My husband and I are going to use some savings and see if we can get me a dental check-up. Hoping for an appointment this week x

You could send that photo to GP through econsult.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've seen the GP and been referred to the dentist. My DH is paying private so I've got an appointment this afternoon 😭😭😭

Good luck 🤞

Choupette7 · 26/07/2023 10:44

Good luck at the dentist this afternoon afternoon.

Choupette7 · 26/07/2023 10:45

Not sure why afternoon appeared twice!

Hayfeverseasonalready · 26/07/2023 10:49

Looks like the crevices you get with tonsil stones. If you poke the tonsil with a cotton bud a tonsil stone may pop out, vile things. I suffered for years until I had a tonsillectomy.

I had a tonsil stone a few years back. The smell is like nothing on earth 😁

It's appalling isn't it 🤢 yet strangely satisfying popping them out! I certainly don't miss my gross tonsils now!

Emamazing · 26/07/2023 16:05

@IncognitoMam @Choupette7 Thank you both x
I've been! Ashamed to say I cried like a baby lol 😂 but all ok. Dentist didn't even mention the tonsil so I'm guessing it's just normal and to do with the mouth infection. I've got some mouthwash and toothpaste to use now.

@Hayfeverseasonalready I'm sorry you had that! That sounds a vile thing to have to experience. Glad you're doing better now x

Did you not point it out?

Yes I said about it and looking at the back for signs of anything serious but it wasn't mentioned so I'm guessing it was all ok.

Good news is I do have a general check up coming up at the doctor's so I can ask my GP if I need to x

Hi
just seen your post. I have a white lump on my tonsil as well and not sure what it is. Did you find out what yours was as can’t get a Dr appointment as there always full up.

Can anyone tell me if this is a tonsil cyst?
Sillsley · 04/01/2024 00:40

@mrsnutz did you get your lump looked at on tonsil, as I have one appear had
for a few weeks now. Before Xmas had antibiotics but never got rid of it as I do suffer with tonsillitis a lot.

Went back last week to GP who have now refered me to ENT, it does not hurt but she says looks like a cyst/ abscess so they may drain it, kindly done me on a 2 week referal to get me seen to quicker as suffer with anxiety and can’t be waiting like 18 months for answers

Goldypants · 04/01/2024 01:21

Hello.

it isn’t a salivary stone is it? I had a submandibular one and it was the worst pain ever

Sillsley · 04/01/2024 05:37

@Goldypants it does not hurt at all, not a bad thing. I’m not sure what it is, it just appeared never had one before!!!

got ENT on 12th Jan 🙌

Whoknowswhatanymore · 04/01/2024 05:56

@mrsnutz @Sillsley
this is identical to what my daughter has on her tonsil (for over a year). Been to ENT specialist and he said it was a benign cyst and to just leave it if not causing any problem or it would be a full tonsillectomy. She’s only 13 so we are leaving it alone and just monitoring for any change. I asked the specialist if it could turn nasty and he said highly unlikely but just come back if at all concerned. To be fair, he didn’t seem concerned in the slightest and the appointment lasted all of 5 minutes!

Mandie4711 · 04/01/2024 07:11

Hi,
yes I had mine checked out and was told it was a mucous cyst about 8mm in size but it was common and benign. I didn’t have to have mine drained I was told to just keep an eye on it and if any changes or pain then go back. Mine wasn’t painful either but it’s always best to get them checked out. Good luck with your appointment and please let me know what they say.

Mandie4711 · 04/01/2024 07:12

Definitely not a salivary stone it looks like a mucous cyst
