Can anyone tell me if this is a tonsil cyst?

Hi I'm Emmy,

I've been rundown after last year because my daughter got very poorly and it was such a stressful time. Well at the end of the year I developed a sore throat, tonsillitis I think but antibiotics didn't really help and now all these months later it's still sore and my left tonsil is painful, red a little white and swollen like a bit of a lump.

No bleeding or any other worrying symptoms other than pain and tiredness. I think it might be a cyst but I was wondering if anyone else here has experienced the same or knows if it a cyst or a stone and what can be done about it? My other tonsil is looking a little red and different but not like this left one.

@Mandie4711 I will let you know just very anxious and worry it’s serious, never had one before but alway suffer with tonsillitis and tonsil stones.. been gargling with salt water twice a day to keeps germs obey

can you request they drain it?? Or do they tend to like leave it.. I have got a bit of a sore throat that side today

@mrsnutz to be honest my GP weren’t too concerned she said it’s looks like a cyst that may need drained but they can’t do in surgery hence why they have referred me to ENT!

Does your daughter suffer with tonsil issues at all? Also does your daughters looks like it’s full off puss ?

My appointment was only 10 minutes she just looked at it with a torch felt my neck etc asked if I had any pain then called in the consultant just for double check and straight away he said it’s common and no need to worry at all. Like your daughter just keep an eye on it. I asked would it ever go away and he said they can or they may just stay there but it can be years before it disappears. I was so worried it was cancer but so pleased it wasn’t.

I was terrified of going as didn’t want the camera up the nose and down the throat as couldn’t cope with that but thankfully I didn’t need this done. All I had done was them look at it and feel my neck. If you would rather it was drained you can ask but usually they just leave them alone. I haven’t got a sore throat with mine so just tell them you suffer with sore throats. I nearly cancelled as I was so anxious especially as I’m disabled and can’t get onto the examination chair or bed but they just let me stay in my wheelchair so try not to worry easier said than done but I honestly think it’s just a cyst and they will leave it alone. You have more white on yours than I do but looks the same size. Good luck 🤞

@Mandie4711 so frustrating, my ENT appointment is next week 12th..
I suppose when you have anything Growing anywhere you kinda worry the dreaded C..

I does seem to be a bit sore today nothing major like a bit of a sore throat but maybe it’s my anxiety making it hurt.

Yes its the waiting that causes us anxiety as think its the worst i was in a right state. Mine was a mucous cyst which is very common. This is my cyst

My appointment was late November and I’m not sure if it’s to do with blocked sinuses but would love to know as I suffer with daily teeth and gum pain have done for 2 years now no dentist can find anything wrong . I did some research yesterday and it said blocked sinuses can cause mouth pain as well. My nose does always feel blocked especially lately so maybe it’s all connected. Guess I better get this checked out now as maybe the reason for all my problems.

My daughters appeared during a bout of tonsillitis and basically never went. Doesn’t cause her any pain or anything. She still gets sore throats from time to time but unrelated to this. Yes it looks like a pus filled pocket with veins on it 🙈 I think they must be more common than we know!

@Whoknowswhatanymore I think they are but never had one before even after bouts of tonsillitis . Does your daughters look like puss under skin

Yes I think it’s best too.

I’ve been told to just keep an eye on my cyst and was told there very common. It may disappear but may not. They can take years to go but as long as it’s not causing any pain then that’s ok.

@@Mandie4711 what the reason we get them is it down to blocked sinuses? Even if it does not cause any pain can they not drain them for them to return back to normal.

when I go I may see if they would drain mine, issue is I do suffer with tonsillitis!

I have no idea why we get them they just seem to appear. Some may need draining but usually they just leave them alone. If you want yours drained there no harm asking see what they say. I’ve just left mine as didn’t fancy having it drained.

I also have something on my tonsils, on the left one I had a tiny tonsil stone however the white marks is always there for years but the circled lump is new.
im so worried that it’s cancer as I am also positive for HPV 16/18 which cause cervical/ mouth.
I get sore throat for months on and off but I only looked into my throat yesterday!
I also have some kind of strange if sinuses since November were the top of my throat and back of nose fulfilled with thick mucous which won’t come out..

@Mandie4711 yea I may ask the question when I go and see what they say, GP said they maybe drain it.

@Mucousymucous I would maybe make an appointment with your GP who can take a look and if need be refer you to ENT.

how was it picked up you were HPV postitive?

2020 I found out I was HPV positive following a smear test and had abnormal cervical cells due to this that had to be removed, just had a smear last month and all clear so no HPV in system anymore. X

@Sillsley I had an abnormal smear test with CIN 3 in 2005. They tested me for HPV and it was positive.
im waiting for phonecall from paramedic, that’s all they booked me.

Have you seen your Dr about this as these always need checking out just to be sure. We all think it’s cancer and then start getting worried and I put of going to my Dr for 8 months but then the dentist advised me to get it checked out. My Dr referred me in the 2 week emergency appointment list and I was seen quickly. Most lumps are benign cysts but to be on the safe side I would get it looked at.

Yes mine looks like yours but I didn’t ask about draining it as I didn’t like the thought of the procedure. I just keep a close eye on it and f it changes then I will go back.

what have you stayed positive HPV from 2005 till now x

@Sillsley i don’t know if I’m still positive. Nobody told me that when I have my smears.
i thought the virus stayed dormant in our body and can get active anytime our immunity is low..

@Mucousymucous not that I am aware of , but apparently people have it and don’t know they got it, it’s only picked up on some test like smears.
so they test your smear and if show positive for HpV they then look
at your cells to see if abnormal, if HPV negative they don’t check, x
